Manilla, Philippines Pre health Prereqs for US Med School transferability?
Good afternoon, new here. My apologies if this was answered elsewhere. Do you know of anyone who has transferred prereqs from an accredited Manilla university into a US Med school? Bottom line is, I need to finish some prereqs and am entertaining the idea of moving to Manila Phillipines so that my dollar goes further and I can focus 100% on school. Goal is to come back to US and apply for Med school. The med school I’m looking at, UWSOM, does have in their admissions page they accept... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Do I need to apply to more schools?
Hi! I applied this cycle (first-time, CA resident, traditional) to 25 schools. I got 24/25 secondaries and other than 2 pre-II rejections, haven't heard anything else from the schools I applied to. I know its still early in the cycle, but all of this waiting is making me worry that maybe I overestimated my chances and need to add a few schools. So here's my background: GPA: 3.83 (c/s are the same) MCAT: 526 (CP: 132 / CARS: 131 / Bio: 131 / PS: 132) State: CA Race: White/Filipino Undergrad... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Am I just burnt out or am I just not meant for the medical field? ANY ADVICE APPRECIATED
I have always dreamt of becoming a doctor. In the Philippines, most kids rely on their parents for everything until they get their degree and marry off. Work is frowned upon (unless you are within poverty line), scholarships are scarce, and parents pay for school so no one really does loans/ get into student debt. Everyone is expected to go to college straight after HS. It’s common to take 18-26 credits a semester. So when I was in my last year of premed in the Philippines, while my... Parasitology methods: intestinal helminth detection and identification — are both done in microscopy?
I finally made an initial title for my thesis proposal "Detection and Identification for Intestinal Helminths of Eurasian Tree Sparrows Passer montanus Linnaeus, 1758". The methods I chose for my investigation are simple fecal flotation and microscopic examination. But when I presented this in class, my instructor asked me " what methods do you use for DETECTION and IDENTIFICATION?". I was confuse since it was still not clear to me of where these processes takes place in my... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Sample Size for Prevalence in Wild Bird Epidemiology
Hi! I am a fifth year veterinary student at Aklan State University, Banga, Aklan. Currently, I am working on a draft for a thesis proposal (though I am still at the RRL phase) which is about the intestinal helminths of Eurasian Tree Sparrows in Panay, Philippines. Sadly, publications about the parasitology of the aforementioned species, I think, are scarcely available in the Far East. But I somehow managed to find few yet very useful literatures. However, there is one thing that I am not... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Diversity Concerns re. U/ORM and Immigrant Experience

Immigrant Experience I immigrated from the Philippines to do high school in the United States. My family was poor and lived in an infested bungalow in a small town. My mom was lucky to... Philippine Medical Schools
Just a heads up or warning for FilAms/Foreigners interested in attending a medical school in the Philippines. Based on experience, there is a big cultural adjustment one has to be aware of. Local students tend to be clannish and very immature. Contrary to beliefs you will find that local students are not welcoming to "foreigners". This is especially true during clinicals. During clinicals, students are grouped into subgroups where they are encouraged to help one another. Be aware that locals... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
