Implementing Comprehensive HIV services in Syringe Service Program (SSP) Settings (R01 - Clinical Trial Required)
Funding Opportunity RFA-DA-23-006 from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. There has been a substantial increase in the number of syringe service programs (SSPs) in the US and the range of these settings has become broader, with many now located in health department or FQHCs, in addition to the more traditional CBO and AIDS Service Organization settings. There is a need to provide models for bringing sustainable integrated HIV prevention and care into SSP settings. Newer SSPs often are in settings that have limited expertise for other substance use services and may be limited in terms of HIV care. More established S...

Marie A. Bernard, M.D., NIH Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity. Guest post by Marie A. Bernard, M.D., NIH Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity, originally posted on the NIH Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity Office Blog. In the COSWD Office, we continually explore ways to foster inclusive excellence in the biomedical research enterprise. As such, I have decided to hold all COSWD seminars, conferences, and meetings entirely online throughout 2022. K99/R00 Candidates Can Continue to Take Advantage of COVID-Related Eligibility Extensions
Under normal circumstances, individuals must have no more than four years of postdoctoral research experience to be eligible to apply for a K99/R00 Pathway to Independence award. Due to ongoing disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, NIH will continue to allow up to a two-receipt cycle eligibility extension for candidates on K99/R00 applications to parent announcements (PA-20-187, PA-20-188, and PA-20-189). If you are planning to take advantage of this flexibility, there are a few details to keep in mind. Candidates must meet all other eligibility criteria. The flexibility applies to new/resubmission and AIDS/non-A...

Are COVID-19 Flexibilities Related to Animal Care and Use Still in Effect?
Yes. The flexibilities allowed by the NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare are continuing due to the recent surges in the COVID-19 pandemic throughout the country and the impact on institutions’ operations. Of note: Assured institutions with existing approved waivers do not need to request new waivers and may continue to use their waivers if unable to conduct semiannual facility inspections on schedule due to COVID-19 restrictions. New requests for waivers to conduct semiannual inspections will be considered on a case-by-case basis. See OLAW’s COVID-19 FAQ VIII.11 for instructions for requesting waivers. Additio...

Extending Existing Guidance for Preparing Applications During COVID-19
For Spring 2022 due dates, NIH recently extended the guidance that while grant applications should not include contingency or recovery plans for problems resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, investigators may address effects due to the pandemic on productivity or other scoreable issues in the personal statement of the biosketch.
