The anything-but-beige brigade
Moth Bird Watch 7 – The anything-but beige brigade Ask most people to describe a moth and usually terms such as dull, grey, brown, night-flying, drab, dingy, useless, clothes eater, are the terms they will use. Some might go so far as to describe them as the boring relatives of butterflies. Well, nothing could be further from the truth the Lepidoptera (meaning scaly winged) are a vast group of insects fare more diverse than just the butterfly sub-group. Many of the 2500 recorded different species in the British Isles are anything but dull and grey, many of them fly during the day and most of them have quite exotic ...

Breakfast Nut Mix
Here a recipe from the Wheat Belly 30-Minute (Or Less!) Cookbook. Here’s your answer to breakfast cereal—but this “cereal” has none of the problems of the stuff that lines an entire aisle at your supermarket. Serve this nut mix with coconut milk, almond milk, or dairy milk, cold or hot. Top with 1/4 cup fresh or frozen berries. It’s also a great accompaniment to yogurt, such as our oxytocin-boosting L. reuteri yogurt. I make use of the modest fruit sugar in raisins. If  you’re serving the nut mix to your children and they prefer it sweeter, add just a bit of stevia or other benig...

Moth of the Month – Maiden ’ s Blush
Maiden’s Blush moth, Cyclophora punctaria The Maiden’s Blush moth, Cyclophora punctaria, Spring form is not as well marked as the Summer form where the blush is more obvious, but you can still see it here. This species is a geometer moth, which means its larvae (caterpillars) move in such a manner that they seem to measure the earth, they’re known as inchworms in the USA and elsewhere. Specifically, this member of the Geometridae is a member of the sub-family Sterrhinae, which includes the “Least Carpet” and several “Wave” moths as well as the “Blood-veins”. The species...

Spring Moths
I’m slowly seeing new moths to my actinic light trap as the spring surges forward, a new one or two each day now. But, one of the stalwarts of the British mothing world posts to the major Facebook mothing group how he had almost 300 different moths to his trap, with 50+ species new for the year. I’m not sure I could cope and certainly wouldn’t be able to identify from memory all of the ones he cited. My “haul” from last night was a lot more modest but interesting nevertheless…and manageable: Shuttle-shaped Dart (7) Male Muslin moths (3) Double-striped Pug (2) Brimstone Hebrew Character C...

Sesame Seed Flour
Sesame seeds actually make a very nice grain-free flour. Look for white or yellow seeds, not the dark or black, as less sesame flavor shows through (nor will the end-product be dark or black). Grind them in your food chopper, food processor, or coffee grinder until reduced to flour. (Stop when a flour-like consistency is achieved, as further grinding will yield seed butter.) If you don’t like the modest sesame seed flavor that comes through, you might find sesame seed flour more suited to a savory, rather than sweet, recipe. Look for bulk sesame seeds that are inexpensive, certainly less expensive than almonds to gri...

Internet Challenges Sending Kids to EDs
Social media influences nearly every part of our lives—how we communicate, teach, and protest. It is powerful because it allows people around the world to connect instantaneously. One of those ways is the social media phenomenon popular since the early 2000s: internet challenges. These challenges range from funny, like the mannequin challenge, to charitable, such as the ice-water bucket challenge, to dangerous, like the blue whale challenge. Several of these can cause injury by ingestion or topical application. The Tide Pod ChallengeConcerns of safety arose shortly after laundry pods were introduced in 2012 when...

“ Rice ” Pudding
Every once in a while, I missing having some rice pudding. Even though rice does not contain a damaging prolamin protein like the gliadin protein in wheat or the zein in corn, it still contains a mixture of unhealthy components. Wheat germ agglutinin, for instance, the very same protein in wheat, is also in rice, ready to exert its gastrointestinal toxic effects such as direct inflammatory injury to the intestinal lining, blocking the hormone cholecystokinin and thereby causing bile stasis that leads to gallstones, and blocking release of pancreatic enzymes and thereby disrupting the process of normal digestion. Rice also ...

Wheat Belly Pumpkin Pie
Well, the holidays roll around once again . . . and it’s time for everything pumpkin! Here is a reminder of how us grain-free folk make a wonderful and delicious pumpkin pie that is wheat- and grain-free. Without grains, it does NOT stimulate appetite, does NOT send blood sugar sky-high, does NOT add to arthritis/joint pain, acid reflux, irritable bowel symptoms, leg edema, depression, moodiness, migraine headache, hypertension, dementia, heart disease, or cancer. You can just have your nice big slice of pumpkin pie, even with a big dollop of whipped cream, all without worries. The pumpkin puree poses only a slight p...

Healthy Wheat Belly Cranberry Sauce
In anticipation of Thanksgiving, here’s a zesty version of traditional cranberry sauce, minus the sugar. The orange, cinnamon, and other spices, along with the crunch of walnuts, make this one of my favorite holiday side dishes. (More holiday recipes are coming!) There are 31.5 grams total “net” carbohydrates in this entire recipe, or 5.25 grams per serving (serves 6). To further reduce carbs, you can leave out the orange juice and, optionally, use more zest. Makes 6 servings 1 cup water 12 ounces fresh whole cranberries 1/4 cup Virtue Sweetener (or other natural sweetener equivalent to 1 cup sugar) 1 tablespoon oran...

Your Nursing Career and a Latte?
Just the other day, I was drinking a latte (decaf---I ' m an unapologetic caffeine lightweight), and I realized that there ' s a very appropriate metaphor related to nurses, nursing, and a perfectly brewed latte. It may sound silly, but it may be more apt than you imagine at first. So, think about a latte for a moment; its base is espresso, a rich, dense shot of coffee awesomeness that boasts deep flavor and a cultural history worthy of movies, books, and a great number of rabid fans around the world. Poured into and over that (hopefully) perfect shot or two of espresso is a quantity of expertly steamed milk, and when it ' ...

ESSA Seems Ripe for Federal Control
Think the end of the No Child Left Behind Act means the end of federal micromanagement? You may have to think again. As I’ve laid out before, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) has several ambiguities that seem to keep the door open for continued federal control over state standards, tests, and accountability mechanisms, even as the law has some provisions that seem to prohibit federal intervention. What, for instance, constitutes “challenging” state standards, and who determines that? Or who decides what the right mix of academic and non-academic factors is in school accountability schemes? It certainly seems tha...

Jumbo Gingerbread Nut Muffin Recipe
At first glance, these tasty Gingerbread Nut muffins from the Wheat Belly 10-Day Grain Detox may not seem sufficient to stand alone as lunch, but once you try these jumbo-size, nut- and oil- rich muffins, you will appreciate how filling they are. And, because they are made with eggs, coconut oil, almonds, and other nuts and seeds, they are also very healthy. You can also add a schmear of cream cheese or a bit of unsweetened fruit butter for extra flavor. To fill out a lunch, add a chunk of cheese, some fresh berries or sliced fruit, or an avocado. As with any Wheat Belly recipe in which one of our benign sweeteners is use...
