New Hampshire Child Didn ’ t Have Measles, Had Vaccine Reaction
KEENE, N.H. (CBS) – A child in New Hampshire who was initially diagnosed with the measles last week actually had a reaction to the vaccine and is not infected with the virus, the state’s Department of Health and Human Services said Thursday. The department released a statement Sunday warning the public that a child had been diagnosed with infectious measles and had been at three locations in Keene. But further lab tests revealed that this was not an infection but rather a reaction to the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, which is made using a weakened version of the virus to build up a person’s immun...

Washington State Limits Exemptions for Children Not Being Vaccinated
(VANCOUVER, Wash.) — Parents in Washington state will no longer be able to claim a personal or philosophical exemption for their children from receiving the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine before attending a day care center or school under a measure signed Friday by Gov. Jay Inslee. The state saw more than 70 cases of measles this year, and Inslee signed the bill at Vancouver City Hall, in the county where most of those cases were centered. The new law takes effect at the end of July. Inslee said that while the bill was an important step in public health, he warned it doesn’t do “everything ne...

Germany Might Make Measles Vaccinations Mandatory
Lawmakers in Germany are considering a new law that would fine parents if their children aren’t vaccinated against measles. The Guardian reports that the draft law would make vaccinations mandatory for any child attending nurseries or schools, as well as teachers, educators and medical staff. Failure to comply could result in fines of up to US$2,800. If approved this year, the law would go into effect by March 1, 2022, and would require parents to provide proof of their children’s vaccination by mid-2020. The proposed measure comes amid a global resurgence of the respiratory illness that has been driven in part...

Should You Get a Measles Booster Shot? Here ’s What Experts Say
Unvaccinated individuals have been the focus of attention during this year’s measles outbreaks. A record 704 cases of the illness have been confirmed in 22 states so far in 2019, and the CDC says the majority of those diagnoses have been in unvaccinated people. Health officials have repeatedly warned nearly everyone to get the shot if they haven’t already — sometimes threatening fines for those who refuse. “Over 90% of the measles cases that have occurred in the U.S. have occurred in unvaccinated persons,” says Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine and infectious diseases a...

Third-Grader In East Boston Tests Positive For Mumps
BOSTON (CBS) — A third-grader at Otis Elementary School in Boston has tested positive for the mumps, the school principal told parents Friday. “We do not believe the student has come into close contact with any students in our school who are not vaccinated. It’s important to note that the mumps can only be transmitted from one person to another through close contact,” said a letter from Principal Paula Cerqueira-Goncalves. Are You Protected From The Measles?
BOSTON (CBS) — There have been almost 700 measles cases identified in the U.S. so far this year, the highest number since the disease was eliminated in 2000, leading many to wonder whether they need a booster to stay protected from this growing threat. All kids need to get two measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccines, usually around one year of age and again around age four. For adults, if you were born before 1957, you’re probably already immune. But if you were born after 1957, you should have documentation of at least one measles-containing vaccine. If you’re just not sure, you can either have a blood te...

U.S. Measles Cases Reach Highest Level in 25 Years. Vaccine Misinformation May Be to Blame
(NEW YORK) — U.S. measles cases in 2019 have climbed to their highest level in 25 years in a resurgence largely attributed to misinformation that is turning parents against vaccines. New York City health officials on Wednesday reported 61 new cases since late last week, pushing this year’s nationwide tally past the 667 cases reported for all of 2014. That would make 2019 the worst year for measles since 1994. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updates its national measles count on Mondays. CDC officials said they are reviewing the latest reports. Roughly three-quarters of this year’s illnesses...
