(American Society for Microbiology) Vaccinating laboratory mice with Streptococcus mitis bacteria prevents their virulent sibling, Streptococcus pneumoniae from infecting the mice. The research suggests that vaccination of humans with live S. mitis might offer protection from some of the many serotypes of S. pneumoniae that vaccines currently do not exist for. This pathogen is one of the most common causes of severe pneumonia, and can also cause meningitis, bloodstream and sinus infections, endocarditis, and middle ear infections in young children. (Johns Hopkins Medicine) A computer-generated model developed by Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers adds to evidence that providing universal vaccination against meningitis B infection to students entering college may be too costly to justify the absolute number of cases it would prevent. Most US Adults Have Not Gotten A Flu Shot For This Mild Season
(CNN) — Most US adults have not gotten a flu shot this season, according to a new survey from NORC, a research organization at the University of Chicago.
As of mid-November, only 43% of surveyed people 18 or older said they had gotten vaccinated against the flu, according to NORC, which has conducted the National Immunization Survey for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 2005. Another 14% who remain unvaccinated claim that they will get the shot, the survey indicates.

Meningitis progress lags substantially behind that of other preventable diseases
(Meningitis Research Foundation) The global disease burden of meningitis remains unacceptably high, and progress lags substantially behind that of other vaccine-preventable diseases. The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) Global Burden of Disease study showed that meningitis deaths reduced by just 21 percent globally between 1990-2016, whereas other preventable diseases such as measles, tetanus, and diarrhea due to rotavirus saw declines of 93 percent, 90.7 percent, and 57.9 percent, respectively, suggesting that progress in meningitis could have been substantially faster.
