The Latest On Zika Virus: Texas Just Developed A Much-Needed Rapid Diagnostic Test
The Zika virus, which is spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, is strongly suspected to be linked to a new wave of microcephaly cases in Brazil. Babies born with this birth defect have smaller heads and sometimes brains that aren't fully developed, which can result in life-long developmental problems.    Zika is currently spreading through Central and South America and the Caribbean, and with the high volume of news about the virus, it's tough to stay up-to-date. Check out our full coverage, or read our daily recaps. Here are four updates, opinions and developments to know about now: ...

Perishing Of Thirst In A Pacific Paradise
MAJURO, Marshall Islands -- A few yards from the crashing waves of the Pacific, on a precariously narrow strip of land, precious rainwater pools on the runway of the Marshall Islands' main airport. This is how the government hydrates tens of thousands of its citizens: the rainwater runoff from the airstrip. The water -- complete with bird droppings and whatever else has landed on the tarmac -- is funneled via pipes to earthen storage reservoirs. From there, it gets filtered and treated and pumped to people down the atoll. During a normal week the water only flows for 12 hours. In prolonged droughts, which are alm...

In The Marshall Islands, Traditional Agriculture And Healthy Eating Are A Climate Change Strategy
LAURA VILLAGE, Marshall Islands -- Holding in his hand a bunch of what he called mountain apples, Steve Lepton grinned like a kid with a new toy. “Oh, it’s good,” he said. “Yesterday I didn’t find any fruit on this one. Wow, this is great. They’re getting red.” The delicate little fruit is crunchy like an apple and sweet. It’s a popular snack in the Marshall Islands, Lepton told The WorldPost, but kids pickle it with salt and Kool-Aid, which defeats the purpose of eating fruit in the first place.  As the Global Climate and Health Alliance made clear with an announcement ...

Weekend Roundup: The WorldPost Maps the Global Conversation
To become a self-conscious "global thinking circuit," the virtual territory of the Internet needs a map that charts the currents and connects the dots of the worldwide conversation. Who are the most influential voices, and how do their ideas spread? This week, The WorldPost joined with the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute in Zurich to produce such a map, the 2015 Global Thought Leaders Index, which, for the first time, analyzes not only the dominant English-language infosphere, but also the other top language areas of Spanish and Chinese, as well as German. One notable result, as I report in my summary of the project, is tha...

Paying for Damage Others Have Brought About
For the peoples of the Pacific, climate change is a pressing reality and a matter of survival. Our Pacific-island region contributes less than 0.03 percent of the world's greenhouse-gas emissions, yet we are amongst the first to feel the impacts of climate change -- we are on the frontline. The Pacific ocean is vast -- covering nearly one-third of the earth's surface -- and it is vulnerable. Our region has more than 33,000 islands and is home to a diverse range of peoples, whose lifestyles have adapted to their environment over millennia. Climate change represents a new and existential threat to our region. We have fou...

At the Mercy of Mother Nature (and of Policies of Larger Nations)
The Vienna Convention for Protection of the Ozone Layer this month celebrates 30 years of environmental protection, including the establishment of the Montreal Protocol, which has successfully phased down hundreds of chemicals harmful to the ozone layer and to global climate. The one remaining challenge, the management of the powerful greenhouse gases called HFCs, is finally being negotiated after several years of calls for action by the Federated States of Micronesia and fellow island nations. Phasing down HFCs under the Montreal Protocol is essential to global climate-change mitigation this century and would enhance int...

Spratly Islands: Burying Coral Reefs Alive
It was tough to read the news a few weeks ago. My news feed was inundated with articles about islands being built on top of coral reefs from The Huffington Post, New York Times, and Washington Post, among others. China's recent efforts to build and expand islands in the South China Sea have serious geopolitical implications. But beyond any international jockeying, China's actions have environmental consequences that will affect the very future of coral reefs. The world's oceans have thousands of isolated reefs and atolls like those in the Spratly Islands. These reefs--far from the local threats that emanate from large hu...

Ko Chin on Minority Health
When we think about improving minority health, we rarely think of clinical trials and research. But we should. To move closer to health equity, we must increase the participation of diverse communities in clinical trials. Clinical trials are essential in determining whether a drug is ready for mass consumption, as well as revealing important information for doctors and patients about prevention, diagnostic and treatment methods. They can also help shed light on whether there are unique bio-markers across the different groups the product is being provided to. The challenge is that for far too long, racial and ethnic minorit...

The Hydrogen Bomb Reaches Retirement Age
The hydrogen bomb turned sixty-two just the other day. The first one was exploded on November 1, 1952 at Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The event was called Ivy Mike. "Ivy" was the name of the test operation and "Mike" was the particular test. The Mike shot was the first test of a "true" two-stage Teller/Ulam design, the basic configuration of a hydrogen bomb. "Teller/Ulam" refers to the bomb's inventors, physicist Edward Teller and mathematician Stanislaw Ulam. The basic idea for a hydrogen bomb had been around for several years: You set off a regular atomic bomb, one that works by the fission (splitting) of hea...
