My Lessons as a Unwilling Intern
So I guess I am an old Millennial as my residency started in the last days of industry lunches (good) and 30+ hour shifts (bad)? Anyhow, I did a transitional internship and then advanced training at a (different) place regarded as toxic by many. My thoughts here are about internship. I had to do 3 months of pediatrics. Didn’t like it. Spent the first month complaining the whole time to my co-residents. So I complained and complained. Got bad evaluations. Didn’t make me any happier. Then I... Are secondary essays normally weighed more heavily than most meaningful essays?
Would it be wise to save the most impactful stories/lessons of certain activities for secondaries rather than using them in the MM section? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Are all non-clinical volunteering opportunities equal?
If my volunteering is gardening work on a farm (one that is involved with the community, holds field trips, lessons, etc) and another communicating with the elderly by phone in these times, would these be regarded differently than say interacting with the homeless population? I'm very passionate about gardening and I have a soft spot for the elderly, so I feel inclined to stick to those two volunteering opportunities. But does it seem adcoms would prefer we take on something that puts us... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

First year attending woes
First year out in a busy private practice (50% own cases). I don’t think I really appreciated just how difficult the transition would be. It’s a totally different ball game when there is no one to call in a pinch to bail me out. I think that’s probably an impossible lesson to simulate in residency, even in programs that afford their residents a good bit of autonomy. I find myself a bit nervous for nearly everything, even the routine cases, despite being confident in my skill set. Also... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Does saying you would do just a PhD look bad in an interview? (Neurotic)
I was asked that at my last interview (would I do just a PhD or just an MD), in the moment, after acknowledging that an MD could do research, I said PhD because I’m leaning toward a career in research, but the interviewer started “lecturing” me about ways to do research as an MD. I felt like I made the wrong choice, but lesson learned for the next interview I guess. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Advice for New Grads
Do not eat out more than once a week. Take if from someone who learned the lesson very late. #1 - It's healthier to cook your own food. #2 - You will save a lot more money. (All of a sudden, I'm finding $1000-2000 left over in my account the day before payday instead of having almost nothing.) PS: I can cook a better steak than Peter Luger or Delmonico's, And a better burger than any chain. Ingredients and technique matter. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
