Errant Missiles and Errant Hawks
Jordan CohenOn November 15, 2022, a  Russian ‐made missile hit the Polish city of Przewodow and killed two civilians. Immediate reactions from think tankers and policymakers followed. There were arguments about whether this would lead toinvoking NATO ’s Article 5 – the Article that calls all NATO countries to provide collective defense if one member is attacked – and, if so, whether things like a No‐Fly Zone and retaliatory strikes would be an effective response. In fact, the Latvian Minister of Defensetweeted that the “criminal Russian regime fired missiles… on NATO territory in Poland.” Moreover, U...

Nitazene Overdose Deaths on the Rise —The Iron Law of Prohibition Cannot Been Repealed
Jeffrey A. SingerLast week the Tennessee Department of Healthreported that overdose deaths from synthetic opioids classified asnitazenes have increased four ‐fold between 2019 and 2021. Nitazenes, like fentanyl and its analogs, aresynthetic opioids that were originally developed to treat pain. They are anywhere from 10 to 20 times more potent than fentanyl. As with overdoses from fentanyl and other opioids, overdoses from nitazenes can be reversed by administering naloxone, although the antidote might need to be given repeatedly to the victims. The first nitazenes were developed in the late 1950s by the Swiss drug make...

Do Liberals And Conservatives Really Have Different Moral Foundations? Differences May Be Less Clear Cut Than Often Claimed
In conclusion, the results of this meta-analysis both confirm and expand the relations of moral foundations and political orientation,” the team writes. However, they “also raise some notable considerations for future studies regarding the methodology and theory”. – Moral foundations and political orientation: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Where Are 3D-Printed Casts?
In 2015, I met Scott Summit, Design Director of 3DSystems. At that time, he was wearing a cast due to ongoing issues with his wrist. He told me it was a cast specific for himself; and one that his physician could open and close in seconds. He even told me he could shower with it, without the need to wrap it in plastic bags. That was, of course, no ordinary cast as it was a 3D-printed cast. However, since that time, I haven’t come across any medical practitioners who offer 3D-printed casts as part of normal care. Nor have I seen people with casts wearing 3D-printed ones. There are companies that do produce these pe...

The United Nations Migration Compact - In Context
Some member states of the United Nations just adopted the “Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. ”  The compact is a legally non-binding statement of principles regarding the treatment of non-humanitarian immigrants, the sharing of information, support for the rule of law in adjudicating immigration matters, and international cooperation.  Practically, this compact does not amount to much a s it is legally non-binding and doesn’t change any laws.  However, the compact has garnered a lot of international attention since the United States, Austria, Australia, Chile, the Czech Republic, Italy, Hunga...

The Perils of CEO Worship - What Happens When the Leader Becomes Demented?
Introduction: the Cult of the CEOAlthough the US and most developed countries are nominally democratic, many of us seem to be again yearning for a man on a white horse, and in the current era, the horse ridden is corporate. On Health Care Renewal, we having been talking about this pheonomenon for a long time. We have written about it in terms ofthe messianic (or visionary, or charistmatic) CEO,CEO disease, and theimperial CEO.These concerns are diffusing into the broader media.  For example, from the introduction to a revent Vox article entitled "The Problem with CEO Worship"Society has always had heroes, be those of w...

Can Money Buy You Longevity And Health?
Better treatment options, dietary conditions and (perhaps) less stress could make the life of the rich also healthier. However, when it comes to longevity and aging, do they really have better chances? Can the upper 0.1 percent secure their health for long decades or even reverse the process of growing old? Could society somehow also benefit from the quest of the richest for longevity? Are health and longevity on the shopping list? You can have an awful lot of things with money. For a starter, you can buy ice cream or Nutella, which are synonymous to self-love, so the Beatles was only partly right in singing that you can...

The dubious cancer “ virotherapy ” Rigvir returns with an equally dubious case report
Rigvir is a "virotherapy" from Latvia promoted by the International Virotherapy Center and, increasingly, by alternative cancer clinics. There is no convincing scientific evidence for its efficacy. That didn't stop its advocates from presenting a case report. Not surprisingly, the case report isn't convincing either. Not Staying Alive
I recently went into the deep history of human life expectancy. Now let ' s look at recent history in the U.S. vs. the rest of the wealthy countries. The OECD is the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. It actually includes some countries you probably don ' t think of as wealthy, such as Mexico and Latvia, but also western Europe, Australia and Japan. As you can see, in the mid-90s the U.S. was average among OECD countries. As life expectancy increased throughout the OECD in the early part of this century, the U.S. lagged behind, and then life expectancy in the U.S. stopped increasing entirely.I snatched th...

A Few PIRLS of Wisdom on New Reading Results
The latest international academic assessment results are out —this time focused on 4th grade reading —and the news isn’t great for the United States. But how bad is it? I offer a few thoughts—maybe not that wise, but I needed a super-clever title—that might be worth contemplating. The exam is theProgress in International Reading Literacy Study—PIRLS—which was administered to roughly representative samples of children in their fourth year of formal schooling in 58 education systems. The systems are mainly national, but also some sub-national levels such as Hong Kong and the Flemish-speaking areas of Belgium. PI...

A conversation with a Rigvir flack
My skeptical analysis of Rigvir, a “Virotherapy” from Latvia being promoted by alternative medicine clinics as a cancer cure, caught the attention of the International Virotherapy Center (IVC). The result was a long and very telling e-mail exchange between its Assistant of Business Development and myself. I post it because the arguments used in the discussion are very telling about where the IVC is coming from when it comes to science. Hint: It’s not a good place. A conversation with a Rigvir flack
Over the last two Mondays, I ' ve beenwriting about an unproven cancer therapy that I hadn ' t really heard much about before. The cancer treatment is called Rigvir; it is manufactured in Latvia and marketed primarily through a Latvian entity called the International Virotherapy Center (IVC). To recap, Rigvir is an unmodified Echovirus, specifically ECHO-7, that, according to the IVC, seeks out cancer cells, replicates in them, and thus lyses the cancer cells (causes their membranes to break, spilling out the cancer cells contents, thus killing the cell), hence the term " oncolytic virus. " Somehow, mysteriously Rigvir was...

If Rigvir is effective " virotherapy " for cancer, why are quack clinics selling it and quackery promoters like Ty Bollinger promoting it?
Last week, I wrote about Rigvir, a “virotherapy” promoted by the International Virotherapy Center (IVC) in Latvia, which did not like what I had to say. When a representative called me to task for referring to the marketing of Rigvir using patient testimonials as irresponsbile, it prompted me to look at how Ty Bollinger’s The Truth About Cancer series promoted Rigvir through patient testimonials and how the IVC itself uses such testimonials. The word “irresponsible” doesn’t even begin to cover it. The post If Rigvir is effective "virotherapy" for cancer, why are quack clinics selling it and quackery p...
