Want healthy eyes? What to know at 40 and beyond
Did the print on that label suddenly shrink? If you’re in your 40s or beyond, you may have asked yourself that question as you struggled to read something that you used to be able to see clearly with no problem. Blame your aging eyes. Much like our joints, our eyes undergo age-related changes. While eye problems can affect people of any age, some conditions become more common after age 40. Getting older? Three common eye conditions Presbyopia. The lens of the eye gets stiffer with age, which makes it harder to focus on objects nearby — hence your label-reading struggles. Many people find satisfaction with inexpensive r...

Glaucoma: What ’s new and what do I need to know?
Glaucoma is the leading cause of permanent blindness worldwide, and the second leading cause of permanent blindness in the United States. Imagio Opto-Acoustic Imaging for Breast Lesions FDA Approved
Seno Medical, a San Antonio, Texas firm, has won FDA approval to introduce its Imagio device that utilizes opto-acoustic imaging to help physicians identify whether breast lesions are benign or malignant. It is hoped that this non-invasive and radiation-free technology will help to reduce the number of biopsies that have to be performed. Opto-acoustic imaging combines ultrasound with laser optics to provide a combined view of tissue anatomy and the blood flow around it. Cancerous lesions commonly exhibit a high density of newly formed blood vessels (angiogenesis) and a lower oxygen saturation compared with surroundi...

Endoscopic Surgery Using Steerable Lasers
Applying an energy source, such as a laser, to cut through or cauterize tissue is already widely used in external surgeries, such as laser eye surgery, but using this technology safely and accurately during minimally invasive internal procedures is difficult. Current endoscopic technology does not permit lasers to be steered and manipulated with sufficient precision. Now researchers at the Harvard Wyss Institute have developed a new technique to accurately steer a laser beam at the end of an endoscope for minimally invasive laser surgery. The approach relies on three small mirrors that move within a tiny cylinder to...

Two Surgeons —a Veteran and a Newcomer—Talk Fighting COVID Burnout
By MICHAEL E. LIPKIN and RUSSELL S. TERRY, JR. Burnout has always been a concern in medicine, and that concern has been amplified by the added stress of COVID-19. Many months into an unpredictable and distressing situation, we have both hung on to our mental health and professional passion by seeking out strategies that work for us. We offer them in two perspectives: veteran and relative newcomer.   Dr. Lipkin: A Veteran’s Perspective When lockdown began in March, we slowed down my practice for about 6 to 8 weeks, and then returned to full pre-COVID levels. It feels like the uncertainty has affected...

Laser-Controlled Microrobots Small Enough for Injections
Microrobotics researchers have been working for decades, in a seemingly futile attempt, to keep up with the miniaturization that has been achieved in the field of microelectronics. Although rudimentary microscopic robots have been developed, they have failed to take full advantage of conventional silicon electronics and so are limited in their functionality. Specifically, no one has developed an actuator at micrometer resolutions that can work with semiconductor processing and be triggered using conventional electronic signals. Now, researchers from Cornell University are reporting in the journal Nature that they have ...

Blood Vessel Networks Made by 3D Printing Powdered Sugar
To study the complex functionality of groups of cells, and to one day build replacement tissues, researchers have been trying to find a way to generate artificial vascular networks capable of supplying oxygen and nutrients to thousands of cells. Extrusion 3D printing, in which a liquefied material is layered down and allowed to harden, has proven to be insufficient to produce fine structures with complex morphologies. Rice University scientists, with the help of others, have now developed a way of using laser-sintering of powdered sugars to produce highly detailed structures that can hold onto live cells and keep them aliv...

More Women Are Pursuing Majority-Male Specialties and Changing Patients ’ Perceptions
By AMY E. KRAMBECK, MD With the exceptions of pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology, women make up fewer than half of all medical specialists. Representation is lowest in orthopedics (8%), followed by my own specialty, urology (12%). I can testify that the numbers are changing in urology – women are up from just 8% in 2015, and the breakdown in our residency program here at Indiana University is now about 20% of the 5-year program. One reason for the increase is likely the growth of women in medicine – 60% of doctors under 35 are women, as are more than half of medical school enrollees. I also credit a generat...
