Management of Conditions Associated With Aging and Older Adults Using Therapeutic Electromagnetic Energy: A Narrative Systematic Review
Conclusion: Shortwave diathermy and pulsed electromagnetic frequency demonstrate similar clinical benefits as other modalities for improving pain, function, and quality of life in the short-term. Further research is needed to better evaluate the parameters of electromagnetic energy and effects for other conditions commonly affecting aging and older adults and at other treatment sites on the body. Examining Occupational Therapists' Awareness of Medical Fitness-to-Drive Legislation Using a Knowledge-to-Action Approach
This study examined OTs' legal and professional responsibilities with regard to medical fitness to drive. Two knowledge translation models guided the study design. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 7 OTs, a geriatrician, as well as representatives from professional regulatory organizations and the licensing bureau. Emergent themes highlight gaps in the translation of knowledge specific to professional responsibilities as well as ethical risks to client rapport. Further education on relevant policies is suggested and changes to existing resources that support clinical practice. (Source: Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation)

Perception of Oldest Older Adults About Pain in Performing Daily Activities
This is a qualitative study that sought to understand the way in which oldest older adults perceive and deal with pain during activities of daily living. We interviewed 32 Brazilian older adults 80 years and older participating in the international multicenter study of Back Complaints in the Elderly. The following categories emerged from the content analysis: “The constant experience of pain,” “Understanding pain,” and “Performing daily living activities in pain.” Although pain is a constant experience and understood as something inherent to aging and difficult to explain, many older adults continue to perform ...

Evaluation of the Effect of 16 Weeks of Multifactorial Exercises on the Functional Fitness and Postural Stability of a Low-Income Elderly Population
A multifactorial exercise programs for older people should be introduced to low-income communities. Of the 138 people who volunteered for the trial, 50 were enrolled and randomly assigned to either the study group (multifactorial exercises and health education; MEE) or the control group (health education; E). Results shown that the MEE group had significantly improved tandem test results and mobility. Improvement in all items of the Senior Fitness Test was also observed. No statistically significant changes were observed in the control group. A multifactorial exercise program combined with health education resulted in a si...

Whole-Body Vibration Increases Cardiopulmonary Performance in the Elderly: A Randomized Double-Blind Clinical Trial
Aim: To evaluate the effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) on ergospirometric variables in the elderly. Methods: A total of 31 elderly people were randomly assigned to 1 of the 3 groups—resistance, WBV, WBV + resistance—training twice per week, 3 months, evaluating ventilatory thresholds by ergospirometry and peripheral strength. Results: WBV groups increased JOURNAL/tgere/04.02/00013614-201810000-00003/math_3MM1/v/2018-10-28T120157Z/r/image-png O2 after training when compared to the resistance group (25.2 ± 1.6 in WBV with P (Source: Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation)

The Use of the Incremental Shuttle Walk Test to Identify Instrumental Activity Daily Living Disability and to Predict Peak Oxygen Consumption in Older Adults: A Methodological Study
Aerobic capacity is essential for physical function. The aims of this study were to identify the peak oxygen consumption ( JOURNAL/tgere/04.02/00013614-201810000-00002/math_2MM1/v/2018-10-28T120157Z/r/image-png O2 peak) and the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) distance associated with disability and to develop an equation to predict JOURNAL/tgere/04.02/00013614-201810000-00002/math_2MM2/v/2018-10-28T120157Z/r/image-png O2 peak, based on the ISWT distance. Fifteen disabled and 13 nondisabled older adults performed the ISWT using a portable telemetric gas analyzer. The JOURNAL/tgere/04.02/00013614-201810000-00002/...

A Randomized Controlled Trial of the Prescribed Stepper Walking Program in Preventing Frailty Among the Dwelling Elderly: Application of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment
This is the first article that described the effect of a prescribed stepper walking program based on comprehensive geriatric assessment in preventing the general fitness of older adults. An experimental design was conducted with 36 elderly individuals (experiment = 15, control = 21) who were asked to have a 30-minute stepper walking exercise twice per week in the research center. The effectiveness of the program would be evaluated in 8 weeks. The results indicated that the 6-minute walk test, body mass index, waist-hip ratio, body composition percentage, and 3-m up and go test improved after an 8-week exercise training in ...

The Value of Adding Transcutaneous Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (VitalStim) to Traditional Therapy for Poststroke Dysphagia: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Background: Dysphagia may delay the functional recovery and substantially affects the quality of life after stroke, mainly if left untreated. Electrical stimulation has been reported as a treatment for pharyngeal dysphagia in recent studies, but the therapeutic effect of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (VitalStim) therapy lacks convincing supporting evidence and needs further clinical investigation. Methods: A total of 135 subjects were randomly divided into 3 groups: traditional swallowing therapy (n = 45), VitalStim therapy (n = 45), and VitalStim therapy plus traditional swallowing therapy (n = 45). The tradit...

Identification of Fall Risk Factors Through Self-report and Physical Performance: The Development of an Interprofessional Community Screening Tool
In this study, the Falls Efficacy Scale assessed subjects' self-reported confidence and the Physical Performance Test assessed performance on functional tasks. Both assessments were analyzed for strengths and weaknesses to develop a community screening tool for health care providers. The results of this study suggest that further exploration of self-reported fear of falling, dizziness, walking ability, and urinary urgency are key areas for the creation of an interdisciplinary fall risk screening tool.
