Effectiveness of Cognitive Stimulation Personalized by the Preexisting Cognitive Level in Older Adults: A Randomized Clinical Trial
This randomized clinical trial analyzed whether a personalized cognitive stimulation based on the individual's preexisting cognitive levels may be more effective in the short and long terms than a standard cognitive stimulation program. In total, 288 older adults were randomized into an intervention group and a control group, stratified according to their cognitive levels. There were significant differences between groups, with a small effect size at postintervention (10 weeks), follow-up I (26 weeks), and follow-up II (52 weeks) (P (Source: Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation)

“Until Body Do Us Part”: Barriers to Retention in Competitive Sports Among European Older Athletes
Using a socioecological model as a theoretical framework, we aimed to explore the barriers to retain in competitive sport 463 senior athletes (aged 61.4 ± 5.5 years) actively engaged in sports disciplines from 4 European countries. Participants answered an open-ended question regarding perceived barriers to continued engagement in sports, and their answers were subject to content analysis. The results highlighted physical determinants as the main reasons for potential disengagement from competitive sports. Our data suggest the need to minimize these potential barriers by implementing programs that are designed to keep sen...

Poststroke Anxiety at 1 Year After Rehabilitation: A Multicenter Study
This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of and factors associated with anxiety among patients with stroke at the 1 year after rehabilitation from 9 tertiary centers. Anxiety, functional score, and quality of life were evaluated by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-anxiety subscale (HADS-A), modified Barthel Index, and World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQoL-BREF), respectively. This study reveals 20 (11.7%) patients with stroke who developed anxiety, and 18 from 171 patients (10.5%) were new cases of anxiety, which was more than double the rate at discharge (4.7%). Factors related to anxiety w...

The Short-Term Effect of Myofascial Relaxation by Roller Massage on Ankle Joint Range of Motion in Older Adults
In this study, in older adults, the roller massager is effective acutely and this effect is maintained for up to 20 minutes. It has been shown that older adults can be included in physiotherapy programs to increase joint motion. New researches are needed for long-term results. (Source: Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation)

A Detailed Description of Physical Activity Counseling Interventions to Support Physical Activity in People With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Scoping Review
Physical activity interventions are recommended for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, adherence is low. This scoping review aimed to provide detailed descriptions of physical activity counseling interventions for people with COPD that have been studied in randomized controlled trials. Common components included the use of pedometers/activity monitors, goal setting, and recording physical activity in a written or electronic diary. Clinicians could consider including these components within their management of people with COPD to promote increased physical activity levels. Additional research...

Are Psychosocial Factors Predictors of Pain and Functional Outcomes After Knee Arthroplasty at 6 and 12 Months After Surgery? A Systematic Review
Conclusion: The evidence suggests that catastrophizing, kinesiophobia, anxiety, self-efficacy, and mental health are predictors of postoperative functional outcomes at 6 and 12 months after surgery. There is conflicting evidence on whether or not catastrophizing, anxiety, and depression are predictors of postoperative pain at 6 and 12 months after surgery. Gait Alterations in Knee Osteoarthritis: A Narrative Review on Gait Analysis Studies
Conclusions: Preliminary studies have been developed on the possible quantification of these alterations through scoring systems like the Gait Deviation Index. Further studies should use this scoring system also to solve the issue between the possible correlation of pain and gait deviation that literature is still trying to solve. Impact on Blood Tests of Lower Limb Joint Replacement for the Treatment of Osteoarthritis: Hip and Knee
The purpose of this brief report was to identify the differences in blood investigations between total hip and knee replacement. We evaluated 80 consecutive patients who underwent hip (40) or knee (40) replacement, by examining pre- and postoperative blood samples. Preoperative blood tests were performed within 30 days prior to surgery, while postoperative blood tests were performed within 24 hours after surgery. We did not find any statistically significant difference between pre- and postoperative hematologic variables between groups (P> .05). Total hip and knee replacement impact patients in early postoperative in a sim...
