General psychiatry, still in no-man's land after all these years
Br J Psychiatry. 2023 Nov 29:1-3. doi: 10.1192/bjp.2023.153. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMental health services have changed beyond recognition in my 38-year career. In this editorial I reflect on those changes and highlight the issues that undermine patient care and damage staff morale. In particular, modern mental health services have undermined the therapeutic relationship, the bedrock underpinning all psychiatric treatment.PMID:38018821 | DOI:10.1192/bjp.2023.153 (Source: The British Journal of Psychiatry for Mental Science)

Association of hippocampal subfield volumes with prevalence, course and incidence of depressive symptoms: The Maastricht Study
CONCLUSIONS: Differences in hippocampal fissure, molecular layer and CA volumes might co-occur or follow the onset of depressive symptoms, in particular with a chronic course. Smaller HATA was associated with an increased risk of incident (chronic) depression. Our results could capture a biological foundation for the development of chronic depressive symptoms, and stresses the need to discriminate subtypes of depression to unravel its biological underpinnings.PMID:37993980 | DOI:10.1192/bjp.2023.143 (Source: The British Journal of Psychiatry for Mental Science)

How to classify antipsychotics: time to ditch dichotomies?
Br J Psychiatry. 2023 Nov 14:1-6. doi: 10.1192/bjp.2023.131. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe dichotomies of 'typical/atypical' or 'first/second generation' have been employed for several decades to classify antipsychotics, but justification for their use is not clear. In the current analysis we argue that this classification is flawed from both clinical and pharmacological perspectives. We then consider what approach should ideally be employed in both clinical and research settings.PMID:37960929 | DOI:10.1192/bjp.2023.131 (Source: The British Journal of Psychiatry for Mental Science)
