Clinical characteristics governing treatment adjustment in COPD patients: results from the Swiss COPD cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: This cohort study provides insight into the management of patients with COPD in a primary care setting. COPD Group C and airflow limitation GOLD 3-4 were both associated with an increase in COPD treatment. In patients with comorbidities, there were often no treatment changes. Exacerbations did not make therapy increases more probable. The presence of neither cough/sputum nor high CAT scores was associated with a step up in treatment.PMID:37955986 | DOI:10.57187/smw.2023.40114 (Source: Swiss Medical Weekly)

Management of biliary obstruction in patients with newly diagnosed alveolar echinococcosis: a Swiss retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: Biliary obstruction in patients with newly diagnosed alveolar echinococcosis can be treated effectively with benzimidazole therapy alone. Biliary tract intervention, on the other hand, is associated with a high complication rate and should probably be reserved for patients with insufficient response to benzimidazole therapy.PMID:37956136 | DOI:10.57187/smw.2023.40116 (Source: Swiss Medical Weekly)

Contemporary adequacy of thromboprophylaxis in acutely ill medical patients in Switzerland: a bi-centric prospective cohort
CONCLUSION: Despite the extensive literature on thromboprophylaxis, the adequacy of thromboprophylaxis has not improved and remains insufficient among medical inpatients. Implementation and evaluation of clinical decision support systems are critically needed in this field.CLINICALTRIALS: gov number: NCT05306821.PMID:37956238 | DOI:10.57187/smw.2023.40117 (Source: Swiss Medical Weekly)

Evolution of humoral immune response to SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine in liver transplant recipients - a longitudinal study
This study aimed to assess real-world data on SARS-CoV-2 antibodies after the second and third SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in liver transplant recipients in Switzerland.METHODS: We enrolled liver transplant recipients who attended regular follow-up visits between 01/07/2021 and 30/04/2022 at the outpatient clinic of the Department of Visceral Surgery and Medicine at Bern University Hospital, Switzerland. Following the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health recommendations, we measured SARS-CoV-2 anti-spike IgG antibodies in 117 liver transplant recipients ≥4 weeks after the second SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccination from 07/2021-04/20...

Contact tracing for COVID-19 in a Swiss canton: analysis of key performance indicators
CONCLUSIONS: The CT in Solothurn used a partially automated workflow and continued to perform well throughout the pandemic, although the relative performance of the CT system declined at higher caseloads. CT remains an important tool for controlling the spread of infectious diseases, but clearer standards should improve the performance, comparability and monitoring of infection in real time as part of pandemic preparedness efforts.PMID:37955850 | DOI:10.57187/smw.2023.40112 (Source: Swiss Medical Weekly)
