Natural course of co-use of alcohol and cannabis in adolescents and young adults in Montréal, Canada.
We reported proportions of co-use, exclusive drinking (“drinking”), exclusive cannabis use (“cannabis use”), frequent co-use, frequent binge drinking, and frequent cannabis use by age and sex. Results: Co-use rose from 2% at age 12–13 to 23% at age 17, was stable at 44% at age 20 and 24, and then decreased to 37% at age 31. Drinking rose from 20% to 51%, and cannabis use was consistently rare ( (Source: Psychology of Addictive Behaviors)

Reinforcer pathology predicts relapse in smokers.
Conclusions: High delay discounting and intensity of demand were associated with a higher risk of relapse after quitting smoking. These findings highlight the importance of adapting treatment strategies for these two variables (delay discounting and cigarette demand), which might confer protective risk against smoking relapse. Technology-assisted opioid education for out-of-treatment adults with opioid use disorder.
Objective: To evaluate the feasibility and potential efficacy of a technology-assisted education program in teaching adults at a high risk of opioid overdose about opioids; opioid overdose; and opioid use disorder medications. Method: A within-subject, repeated-measures design was used to evaluate effects of the novel technology-assisted education program. Participants (N = 40) were out-of-treatment adults with opioid use disorder, recruited in Baltimore, Maryland from May 2019 to January 2020. The education program was self-paced and contained three courses. Each course presented information and required answers to multip...

Complementarity in daily marijuana and alcohol among emerging adults.
Conclusions: Results add to the emerging conclusion of complementary marijuana and alcohol co-use within a single day, showing it occurs for both women and men, across a full range of marijuana use, and increases with time while being affected by alcohol use problems and day of week. The overall strong co-use relationship highlights risky behavior among late adolescents and supports an emphasis on common underlying substance use causes. However, the different pattern when assessed yearly demonstrates the importance of tailoring the timescale of analysis to the specific substance use question. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) ...

Evaluating cannabis use risk reduction as an alternative clinical outcome for cannabis use disorder.
Objective: Abstinence is rarely achieved in clinical trials for cannabis use disorder (CUD). Cannabis reduction is associated with functional improvement, but reduction endpoints have not been established, indicating a need to identify and validate clinically meaningful reduction endpoints for assessing treatment efficacy. Method: Data from a 12-week double-blind randomized placebo-controlled medication trial for cannabis cessation (NCT01675661) were analyzed. Participants (N = 225) were treatment-seeking adults, M = 30.6 (8.9) years old, 70.2% male, and 42.2% Non-White, with CUD who completed 12 weeks of treatment. Freque...

Understanding the motives, contexts, and consequences of unplanned versus planned drinking in daily life.
Conclusions: Findings showed that planned drinking—irrespective of consumption—was related to more negative consequences than unplanned drinking. In addition to targeting intentions to drink, the present study provided specific motives and social and physical contexts that are associated with planned drinking that could be incorporated into ecological momentary interventions focused on harm reduction. Patterns and correlates of consumer protection tool use by Australian online gambling customers.
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that voluntary deposit limits have inherent limitations in addressing harmful behaviors if consumers can easily increase or remove limits. The study suggests that greater efforts are needed to encourage CPT use among a broad customer base, including default limits requiring opt-out, greater restrictions on increasing or remove limits, and more persuasive communication of the benefits of timeouts. Testing affect regulation models of drinking prior to and after drinking initiation using ecological momentary assessment.
Conclusions: PA increased following drinking during episodes. Our results suggest that a focus on PA prior to episodes and a focus on NA during episodes may interrupt processes leading to heavy drinking, and may therefore aid prevention efforts.
