Randomized controlled trial testing a video-text tobacco cessation intervention among economically disadvantaged African American adults.
Conclusions: A culturally specific mHealth intervention demonstrated positive effects on NRT use and short-term abstinence. Additional research in a larger sample and with long-term follow-up is warranted. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: Psychology of Addictive Behaviors)

Coping-motivated escalations in adolescent alcohol problems following early adversity.
Conclusions: Findings support enduring elevations in drinking risk over 6 years following disruptive family relations in early adolescence. Such risks appear to be driven by negative affect regulation mechanisms through coping-motivated drinking. Future work should assess generalizability of these findings across diverse samples and could test similar negative reinforcement mechanisms of drinking following exposure to clinically impairing traumatic experiences. Public Health Significance Statement: This study demonstrated that disruptive family relations in early adolescence are linked to greater motivation to drink to cop...

Test of a deviance regulation theory intervention among first-year college student drinkers: Differential effects via frequency and quantity norms.
Conclusions: These results provide initial support for the use of a DRT prevention program for FTIC students. Negative messages may promote long-term PBS use, while positive messages may be most effective in addressing immediate and lasting changes in the use of alcohol protective strategies. "On the role of (implicit) drinking self-identity in alcohol use and problematic drinking: A comparison of five measures." Correction to Cummins, Lindgren, and De Houwer (2020).
Conclusions: Our results suggest that researchers who wish to assess drinking-related self-identity and to predict alcohol-related outcomes cross-sectionally should set their focus primarily on the use (and further development) of the ASCS, rather than any of the implicit measures. Future research focusing on the ASCS should seek to investigate the generalizability of our findings to patient populations, and incorporate relational information within that procedure to further improve upon its already-strong utility. Combined use of alcohol and cannabis: Introduction to the special issue.
Conclusions: The studies in this special issue provide new insight into combined use of alcohol and cannabis. They also highlight a number of promising avenues for future inquiry as the literature on alcohol and cannabis co-use continues to grow. Social network moderators of brief alcohol intervention impact.
Conclusions: Study findings provided evidence that a PFI was efficacious in mitigating some risky social network influence. However, findings did not support a consistent impact across all the network variables examined. Future research is needed to further clarify social network influences and how they may be targeted to enhance intervention efficacy. Ethnicity and the mechanisms of point-of-sale e-cigarette marketing’s influence on behavior: A longitudinal study.
Conclusions: Differential exposure to POS marketing may explain some of the ethnic disparities in tobacco product use behavior such as e-cigarette use. POS marketing may affect e-cigarette use behavior mainly through the explicit pathway, notably affect regulation expectancies. An investigation of the reinforcing value of video game playing relative to concurrently available monetary alternatives.
Conclusions: Like other behavioral addiction studies, results suggest that methodologies and behavioral measures commonly used in drug administration literature can be effectively applied to VGP. The impact of marijuana use on cocaine use outcomes among patients in methadone maintenance treatment across five trials of contingency management.
Objective: Cocaine use is prevalent among patients in methadone maintenance and a risk factor for poor treatment outcomes. Contingency management (CM) decreases cocaine use in this population, but little is known about its efficacy when marijuana use is present prior to or during treatment. Method: Data from five randomized CM trials (N = 557) were used to evaluate whether: (a) marijuana frequency (none, low, or high) prior to or during treatment impacts cocaine use outcomes and (b) marijuana use differentially impacts cocaine outcomes with standard care (SC) + CM versus SC alone. Results: Relative to no marijuana use, low...

The effect of acute alcohol intoxication on alcohol cue salience: An event-related brain potential study.
Conclusions: With the aim of better understanding the potential influence of the broader context on responses to individual cues, the present study examined the perceived salience of alcohol cues within a drinking setting. Findings provide evidence for alcohol cue salience that is both robust and also widespread across drinkers. More generally, the present study’s findings may offer new directions for understanding neurocognitive processes of alcohol cue salience across contexts. Heavy drinking and drinking harms for cisgender and transgender college students.
Conclusions: Patterns of alcohol use, consequences, and their interrelationship differed for cisgender men, transgender women and men, and nonbinary individuals relative to cisgender women. There is a need for gender-inclusive prevention for alcohol harms among students. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: Psychology of Addictive Behaviors)
