Alcohol use disorder, psychiatric comorbidities, marriage and divorce in a high-risk sample.
Objective: To examine associations between alcohol use disorder (AUD), its psychiatric comorbidities, and their interactions, with marital outcomes in a diverse high-risk, genetically informative sample. Method: Participants included European ancestry (EA; n = 4,045) and African ancestry (AA; n = 1,550) individuals from the multigenerational Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) sample (56% female, Mage ∼ 41 years). Outcomes were lifetime marriage and divorce. Predictors included lifetime AUD, an alcohol problems polygenic score (PRS), and AUD comorbidities, including conduct or antisocial personality ...

Sibling influences on adolescent alcohol use during the spring 2020 COVID-19 pandemic shutdown.
Conclusions: Siblings are important socialization agents of alcohol use during adolescence. Sibling interventions may be particularly salient during times of stress and isolation when youths’ social interactions with peers may be limited. Social norms of alcohol use among American Indian/Alaska Native college students.
Conclusions: Current findings may inform norms-based alcohol use interventions, as AI/AN-specific reference groups may have a significant impact on drinking among men, but not women. Future culturally relevant alcohol use intervention research for AI/AN young adults is warranted. Harmonization of theory, methods, and inferences in addictions research.
The articles in the present special section highlight four ways in which our applications of methods, and their harmonization with theory, can hold us back, and each offers an avenue for improvement that brings us closer to our goal of building a cumulative scientific record of the study of addiction. It brings together four articles that are intended to provide new ideas and directions for research on addictive behaviors. It is important for researchers to consider how their study designs, measurements, and statistical tests are specific expressions of the theories they wish to test. Each article illustrates a dimension o...

Introduction to special section for Angela K. Stevens.
This special section is dedicated to some of the recent work by Dr. Angela Stevens, who passed away unexpectedly last year. She is dearly missed by those fortunate enough to have known her, but her legacy lives on through the lives she touched and her research. Since the beginning of her undergraduate training, Dr. Angela Stevens has dedicated her professional life to improving the lives of people who use drugs and alcohol through research. During her doctoral training at Texas Tech University, her research program focused on risk and protective factors which influence alcohol and cannabis use based on the theory of planne...

Measurement invariance and other psychometric properties of the Short Inventory of Problems (SIP-2R) across racial groups in adults experiencing homelessness and alcohol use disorder.
This study documents psychometric properties, including measurement invariance, reliability, and convergent validity, of a measure of alcohol-related harm, the Short Inventory of Problems (SIP-2R), across Black, North American Indigenous (NAI), and White adults experiencing homelessness and alcohol use disorder (AUD). Method: Adults experiencing homelessness and AUD who had participated in one of two randomized controlled trials of harm-reduction treatment (N = 493; NAI = 205, Black = 125, and White = 163) were included in this psychometric study of the 15-item SIP-2R. Results: Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis (MGCF...

Fentanyl overdose concerns among people who inject drugs: The role of sex, racial minority status, and overdose prevention efforts.
Conclusion: Female sex and racial minority status were associated with greater concern regarding fentanyl overdoses for oneself. Increasing overdose deaths in these populations suggests disparate access to harm-reduction initiatives rather than interest or concern. Furthermore, findings on naloxone, MOUD, and concerns for peers support social network-based interventions among PWID. Sensitivity to the disinhibiting effect of alcohol: The role of trait impulsivity and sex differences.
Conclusions: These findings suggest significant sex differences in the relationship between trait impulsivity and disinhibition. This sex difference may explain inconsistent research findings in studies assessing links between trait and behavioral measures of impulsivity. The data also point to trait impulsivity and sensitivity to alcohol-induced disinhibition as independent constructs. A randomized pilot trial of a mobile delivered brief motivational interviewing and behavioral economic alcohol intervention for emerging adults.
Conclusions: Live text-messaging to deliver the BMI + SFAS is feasible and well-received. The preliminary efficacy results should be interpreted cautiously due to the small sample size but support further investigation. Real-time associations between discrimination, cannabis use, and mood among sexual and gender minority individuals.
Conclusions: These findings uncover some of the acute within-day effects of both daily SGM discrimination and cannabis use on mood. These findings build on the current understanding of minority stress, in real time, and suggest avenues for prevention, and intervention efforts to offset risk for psychological distress and cannabis use among SGM individuals who experience minority stress.
