Police applicant response bias on the California Psychological Inventory.
This study investigated positive response bias on the California Psychological Inventory (CPI)-434 by police officer applicants as scored by the CPI-434-Police and Public Safety Report. Police officer applicants completed the CPI-434 under high and then again under low demand conditions. The high demand condition was represented by the CPI administration as part of the preemployment psychological evaluation. The low demand condition was represented by a CPI administration with no contingencies approximately 4 months later during the police academy. Demand effects were illustrated by comparing applicant scores (within-subje...

Adjustment disorders: A research gaps analysis.
This study utilizes a systematic methodology to identify and prioritize research gaps in adjustment disorders. We used authoritative source reports to identify gaps in research domains from foundational science to services research. Subject-matter experts conducted literature searches to substantiate and refine research gaps, and stakeholders assessed the importance and impact of this work for researchers and policy-makers. We identified 254 possible research-needs statements, which were ultimately reduced to 11 final, prioritized research gaps. Two gaps addressed prevention and screening and three addressed treatment and ...

Pre-COVID-19 deterrents to practicing with videoconferencing telepsychology among psychologists who didn't.
This study examined pre-COVID-19 deterrents reported by psychologists who did not use telepsychology. Participants were 1,400 psychologists with an average of 26.3 (SD = 11.18) years in practice who were currently practicing within the United States but did not currently use telepsychology. All 50 states were represented as well as Washington, DC. The most commonly reported deterrents, from most to least frequent, were insufficient training, client safety/crisis concerns, privacy, legality, ethics, reimbursement, efficacy, prohibitive organizational policies/culture, and insufficient demand. Logistic regression analyses su...

The evidence for the partners for change outcome management system is insufficient: Reply to Duncan and Sparks (2020).
In their recent article in Psychological Services, Duncan and Sparks (2020) criticize our meta-analysis on the Partners for Change Outcome Management System (PCOMS; Østergård, Randa, & Hougaard, 2020) and judge it to be misleading and flawed. This reply points out omissions and mistakes in Duncan and Sparks (2020) and highlights our decisions regarding inclusion criteria, choice of outcome measures, and analytical strategy. We argue that the use of the PCOMS Outcome Rating Scale might inflate effect sizes because of social desirability. Therefore, independent outcome measurement is necessary for a stringent evaluation of...

Assessing feigning with the Feigning Evaluation INtegrating Sources (FEINS) in a forensic psychiatric sample.
Evaluators of examinees in forensic contexts must consider the potential for falsified or exaggerated psychiatric symptoms and/or cognitive deficits. A number of validated assessment tools assist evaluators in identifying those examinees who feign impairment; however, no comprehensive method has been established for consolidating data from multiple tests, interviews, behavioral observations, and collateral sources. The current pilot study preliminarily examined the interrater reliability and validity of a new forensic assessment tool, the Feigning Evaluation INtegrating Sources (FEINS), developed to guide evaluators in the...

Arrest history and psychopathology among veterans at risk for suicide.
While preliminary evidence suggests an association between legal involvement and suicide risk among veterans, no research to date has explored the prevalence and/or correlates of legal involvement among veterans at high risk for suicide. The current study examined the relation of suicide attempt, suicidal ideation, and psychopathology to history of criminal arrest in a sample of 286 veterans at risk for suicide. Results indicated approximately half (47%) of at-risk veterans had a history of arrest. Inconsistent with hypotheses, arrest history was not associated with history of suicide attempt, current suicidal ideation, or...

I end the essay by discussing how prosumers who are also educators can advocate more broadly to dispel myths and create more inclusive postsecondary environments for students with mental illnesses. Veterans’ experiences with and perspectives on insomnia treatment: A qualitative study.
Qualitative interviews were conducted with veterans to understand their experiences and perceptions about insomnia and its treatment, with a focus on cognitive–behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) and brief behavioral treatment for insomnia (BBTI). There is a lack of knowledge about veterans’ understanding of this prevalent disorder, yet their experiences and perceptions can influence treatment delivery and treatment outcomes. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) can improve insomnia care by considering and responding to this valuable information from veteran stakeholders. Twenty veterans with an insomnia diagnos...

Training providers in shared decision making for trauma treatment planning.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)/Department of Defense (DoD) Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) for the Management of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Acute Stress Disorder strives to advance the VA’s practice of recovery-oriented, evidence-based, patient-centered care (PCC) for veterans with PTSD. A core foundation of PCC is that care is individually tailored to meet the needs and preferences of each patient. Accordingly, the 2017 update to the CPG specifically recommends the use of shared decision making (SDM), an individualized collaborative approach to treatment planning, in the PTSD treatment plan...
