Outpatient provider staffing ratios: Binary recursive models associated with quality, access, and satisfaction.
Psychological Services, Vol 20(1), Feb 2023, 137-143; doi:10.1037/ser0000449Veterans Health Administration (VHA) continues to expand the mental health (MH) workforce to meet increasing demand for services. In the present study, longitudinal unbiased recursive partitioning models (conditional inference trees) were created to identify optimal cutoffs for outpatient staffing ratios associated with success on VHA’s measures of quality, access, and satisfaction. Quarterly Staff-to-Patient Ratios (SPRs), defined as the number of full-time equivalent providers per 1,000 veterans receiving outpatient mental health care, were cal...

Motivational interviewing for family planning and reducing risky sexual behavior among incarcerated men nearing release: A randomized controlled pilot study.
This study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of MI for family planning and risky sexual behaviors with incarcerated men nearing release. Preliminary efficacy of the MI intervention was also compared to an educational control group. Thirty-two men were assessed at baseline and randomized to one 90-min session. Assessment occurred 2 months after release. MI was feasibly administered, and participants were highly satisfied with both treatments. In addition, those who received MI reported higher rates of condom use with casual partners, higher rates of partner use of hormonal contraceptives, and slightly higher rates ...

Examining the feasibility and effectiveness of online acceptance and commitment therapy self-help in a quasi-stepped care model: A pilot study.
Psychological Services, Vol 20(1), Feb 2023, 166-177; doi:10.1037/ser0000596The global burden of mental illness and limited resources make increasing the efficiency of available mental healthcare resources especially crucial. One way this can be done is a stepped care approach to treatment. To test the viability of using internet-based self-help in a stepped care model, we examined the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of an online self-help acceptance and commitment (ACT) program prior to starting in-person therapy at a university community clinic (N = 51). Online program acceptability was at least moderate. T...

Testing assumptions about peer support specialists’ susceptibility to stress.
This study is among the first to characterize stress among PSs, compared to data on other groups. Seven hundred and thirty-eight PSs working in U.S. mental health settings completed a cross-sectional online survey that included the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale, and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Participants’ scores were compared with those obtained in prior samples of nonreferred adults and nonpeer clinicians. Comparisons are stratified by PSs’ level of current symptoms, assessed with the Brief Symptom Inventory. As a group, PSs experienced low to moderate levels of general and wo...
