Contrasting ecological contexts among treatment-seeking military sexual assault survivors: Consideration of relationships with sexual and gender minority identification.
Psychological Services, Vol 21(1), Feb 2024, 139-147; doi:10.1037/ser0000656Survivors of military sexual trauma (MST) seeking mental health services may present with concerns extending beyond symptom relief. Attention to social, economic, and coping resource contexts is salient for care consideration. Although those identifying as sexual and gender minorities (SGM) are overrepresented among service members exposed to assaultive MST, research contrasting ecological resource variability among treatment seekers is limited. The present study delineates modifiable risk and protective factors that might be used to inform MST-rel...

Does screening for PTSD lead to VA mental health care? Identifying the spectrum of initial VA screening actions.
Psychological Services, Vol 20(3), Aug 2023, 525-532; doi:10.1037/ser0000651Despite the active posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) screening program in Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) primary care clinics and the availability of empirically supported treatments for PTSD at VA, many veterans for whom screening suggests treatment may be indicated do not gain access to VA-based mental health care. To determine where we may be losing veterans to follow-up, we need to begin by identifying the initial action taken in response to a positive PTSD screen in primary care. Using VA administrative data and chart review, we identi...

Military behavioral health technicians: Multiple relationship dilemmas and recommendations for supervision.
Psychological Services, Vol 20(2), May 2023, 353-362; doi:10.1037/ser0000664Enlisted behavioral health technicians (BHTs) in the military provide behavioral health care to service members worldwide under the supervision of licensed providers. Given their paraprofessional role, BHTs serve in close social and personal proximity to their patient population and may be at risk for engaging in multiple relationships. In order to guide supervision of BHTs, a framework should be leveraged that examines power differentials, the duration of treatment, the nature of termination, the compatibility of multiple roles, supervisor consult...

Suicidal ideation and clinician-rated suicide risk in veterans referred for ADHD evaluation at a VA Medical Center.
Psychological Services, Vol 21(1), Feb 2024, 13-23; doi:10.1037/ser0000659The U.S. military veteran population experiences elevated rates of suicide relative to demographically matched community samples. Understanding suicide risk factors in veterans is therefore of critical importance. Accordingly, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has implemented elevated vigilance for suicidal ideation in its health care. One potential risk factor for suicidal ideation or behavior may be attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which is frequently characterized by impaired impulse control and experience of intense emotion...

A pilot study examining the effectiveness of a short-term, DBT informed, skills group for emotion dysregulation during the perinatal period.
Psychological Services, Vol 20(3), Aug 2023, 697-707; doi:10.1037/ser0000662The perinatal period (pregnancy and the first-year postpartum) is a time of increased vulnerability to mental health difficulties including emotion dysregulation. Research conducted on treatments targeting emotion dysregulation during this time is limited. Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) skills groups are considered the gold standard for targeting emotion dysregulation. We developed and evaluated the effectiveness of a seven-session DBT informed skills group (perinatal emotion regulation skills [Peri-ERS]) tailored to meet the unique emotion d...

Caring contacts for suicide prevention: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Psychological Services, Vol 20(1), Feb 2023, 74-83; doi:10.1037/ser0000645Caring Contacts (CC), a low-cost intervention originally designed and tested by Jerome Motto in 1976, remains one of the few strategies to demonstrate efficacy in the prevention of suicide deaths. Interest in CC has increased steadily over the last several years in tandem with rising U.S. suicide rates and the acceleration of suicide prevention initiatives. There have been several efforts to design interventions modeled after Motto’s strategy, and the recent publication of additional large-scale randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in alignment with...

Stress overload in first-generation college students: Implications for intervention.
Psychological Services, Vol 20(3), Aug 2023, 636-646; doi:10.1037/ser0000650First-generation college students (FGCS), those whose parents never obtained a baccalaureate, are disadvantaged relative to continuing generation college students (CGCS) in regard to academic performance and health status. The literature documents myriad challenges facing FGCS, in the form of both adjustment demands and limited resources. Stress overload, the pathogenic form of stress, occurs when demands overwhelm coping resources. Its relevance to the plight of FGCS, as well as its established link to dysfunction in other college populations, pro...

Military chaplains and mental health clinicians: Overlapping roles and collaborative opportunities.
Psychological Services, Vol 20(1), Feb 2023, 56-65; doi:10.1037/ser0000661Military chaplains and mental health clinicians have unique professional roles and functions within the Department of Defense. However, they also have intersecting roles in delivering care to service members with mental health issues. Although diagnosis and treatment of clinical disorders is the primary focus of mental health clinicians, military chaplains are often the first contact made by service members seeking help for mental health concerns, due in part to issues of greater accessibility, ensured confidentiality, and less stigma. There is growi...
