Implementation facilitation strategies to promote routine progress monitoring among community therapists.
This study sought to identify the relative importance of facilitation strategies viewed as most helpful for increasing intention to use RPM among 388 ethnically diverse community therapists serving children and families. Four types of facilitation strategies were examined: language/interpretability, automation, staffing/access, and requirements. Mixed analyses of variance found that therapists’ reported intentions to use RPM were more influenced by strategies of automating assessment administration, provision of clerical assistance, and agency requirements than by making linguistically appropriate measures available. How...

Brief behavioral treatment for insomnia: Treatment schedule and training feasibility in the military.
Insomnia is a threat to the well-being and combat readiness of military service members. Brief Behavioral Treatment for Insomnia (BBTI) is effective in treating insomnia, but the treatment schedule is difficult to implement in the Military Health System due to shorter appointment windows than what is offered in civilian settings. In the present study, 23 behavioral health providers were trained in a version of BBTI adapted for use within the Military Health System. Training was conducted remotely via a 2-day webinar, followed by 12 weekly telephone consultations with a trainer. Surveys were conducted before and after the 2...

Proximal risk for suicide in correctional settings: A call for priority research.
Suicide is the leading cause of death among jail detainees and the third leading cause of death among state prison inmates. These populations have been recognized as a high-risk group deserving special clinical attention. The literature on deaths by suicide in correctional settings has identified numerous risk factors for eventual death, but few of these risk factors are specific to the last days of life to aid clinicians in estimating near-term risk of serious self-injury or death. The poor understanding of near-term risk is particularly important in jail settings where many suicide deaths occur within 24 hr of entry. Alt...

Assessment of barriers to effective use of psychiatric advance directives: Providers’ knowledge and attitudes.
Psychiatric advance directives, or directives for mental health treatment (DMHTs), are consistent with the principles of psychiatric rehabilitation, self-determination, and a recovery orientation. DMHTs have promise as a consumer-empowering part of a relapse prevention plan. In the context of state psychiatric hospitals, where successful community reintegration is crucial, they have particular relevance. However, DMHTs tend to be underutilized, despite the existence of consumer-friendly laws and consumer interest. Mental health providers (n = 225) were surveyed to assess knowledge of and attitudes toward more comprehensive...

Disclosure of lived experience of mental illness in training: Reasons for disclosure.
Students in mental health (MH) professions often face MH symptoms themselves related to the stress of graduate training and have been shown to benefit from supportive mentoring. Little is known, however, about trainees who already have a mental illness, and how best to help them succeed. Snowball sampling was used to survey 35 MH professionals with lived experience of mental illness (LE), also known as “prosumers.” The survey included questions about participants’ past disclosure about mental illness when they were in a training role. Questions were also asked about participants’ experience supervising or teaching ...

Characteristics and outcomes for defendants charged with misdemeanors referred for court-ordered competency evaluations.
Recent research has suggested nationwide increases in the rates of referral for competence to stand trial (CST) evaluations across the United States. Many of these evaluations are for defendants charged only with misdemeanor offenses and for whom diversion programs are most appropriate. The present study was designed to analyze the characteristics of, and re-arrest outcomes for, defendants charged with misdemeanors ordered to undergo CST evaluations in a large metropolitan area. Overall, there was a high base rate of incompetent to stand trial (IST) opinions (over 70% of defendants) in this sample, with the greatest impair...

Persistent, poor quality competency to stand trial reports: Does training matter?
We examined 388 CST reports from defendants who were ultimately found incompetent to stand trial and admitted to a state hospital for restoration in 2012–2013. We evaluated the reports for adherence to both professional guidelines and current literature on the appropriate conduct of CST evaluations. Consistent with previous studies, our results showed that the reports evidenced overall poor quality and evaluators were largely unable to accurately describe the nature of the mental illness or explain how clinical factors (i.e., diagnoses or symptoms) impacted CST abilities. Notably, we found that experts board certified in...

Factors contributing to PTSD treatment dropout in veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan: A systematic review.
Although treatment effectiveness among evidence-based psychotherapies (EBPs) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been well established, treatment dropout among veterans continues to be a concern within these treatments. Due to the uniqueness of the Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF)/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF)/Operation New Dawn (OND) veteran cohort, this article reviewed the literature examining factors contributing to treatment dropout from EBPs for PTSD among OEF/OIF/OND veterans. We conducted a systematic review of the published literature using PsycINFO, PubMed, and PTSDpubs with a restriction on year of publ...

A secondary analysis of a brief video intervention on suicidal ideation among recent rape victims.
Although rape has been linked to risk for suicidal ideation and attempts, there are scant data on the efficacy of brief interventions to reduce suicidality among recent rape victims. This secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial investigated whether a video intervention delivered in the emergency department (ED), cortisol measured at the ED, and prior rape history predicted postrape suicidal ideation independently or in combination with the other predictors. Participants were 235 women aged 15–71 years who presented to the ED for a sexual assault medical forensic examination and were randomly assigned to eithe...

Criminogenic needs and intimate partner violence: Association with recidivism and implications for treatment.
The Risk–Need–Responsivity (RNR) principles of effective correctional service that are well supported in the general offending literature have less often been applied to the assessment and treatment of intimate partner violence (IPV). Well validated IPV risk assessment tools are now widely available, and IPV treatment programs that match treatment intensity to assessed risk have shown promising pre-to-post treatment effects. The present study builds on the study of RNR principles in IPV by exploring criminogenic needs and their relation to recidivism and to recently proposed treatment intensity categories derived from ...

Psychologists with lived experience of non-suicidal self-injury: Priorities, obstacles, and recommendations for inclusion.
The science and practice of psychology are improved by fostering an inclusive environment for professionals with lived experience of mental illness, sometimes referred to as “prosumers”. Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is an increasingly prevalent behavior that occurs across the spectra of mental disorders, and that is associated with greater stigma than many other mental health concerns. Further, individuals with lived experience of NSSI may face unique challenges, for instance, due to the visible nature of NSSI scarring. In this commentary, we describe the negative consequences associated with stigmatizing and exclud...

The effectiveness of telepsychology with veterans: A meta-analysis of services delivered by videoconference and phone.
Veterans face a variety of stressors due to their military service and are more likely to develop psychological problems as a result. Research suggests that as many as half of veterans with mental health conditions go untreated due to barriers including lack of accessibility to services and stigma. The present study builds on previous research by using meta-analytic techniques to determine the effectiveness of telepsychology-delivered therapy with veterans. Empirical studies were included if they reported veteran-related outcome data on a psychological intervention used to treat a mental health condition remotely using eit...
