Facilitators and Barriers to Minority Blood Donations: A Systematic Review
Discussion The reviewed studies demonstrated that facilitators and barriers to minority blood donations are complex and exist concurrently. Community education and communication about blood donation have a positive effect on fellow community members, including friends and family, in racial and ethnic minorities that are underrepresented among blood donors. Findings further suggest the need to rebuild trust among minority communities. (Source: Nursing Research)

Maternal Adverse Childhood Experiences, Family Strengths, and Chronic Stress in Children
Background Researchers have demonstrated that maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as abuse and neglect, are associated with prenatal risk factors and poor infant development. However, associations with child physiologic and health outcomes, including biomarkers of chronic or “toxic” stress, have not yet been explored. Objectives The purpose of this study was to examine the associations among past maternal experiences, current maternal posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and children's indicators of exposure to chronic stress in a multiethnic sample of mothers and children at early school...

The Association Between Health Literacy and Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Behaviors: Findings From the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
Background Health literacy has been linked to breast and cervical cancer screening, with inconsistent findings, which may result from the use of nonprobability sampling and a health literacy instrument that measures a subset of health literacy. Objective The aim of this study was to examine the association between health literacy and breast and cervical cancer screening using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) that uses a nationally representative U.S. probability sample. Methods This cross-sectional, correlational study used national-level data from the 2016 BRFSS for women eligible f...

Best Practices for Obtaining Genomic Consent in Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury Research
This study seeks to explore how the enrollment strategies used in a parent study contributed to the high consent rates, establish current best practices that can be used in future studies, and identify additional factors that contribute to consent into pediatric traumatic brain injury biobanks. Methods Retrospective secondary analysis of data from a parent study with high consent rates was examined to explore factors affecting consent into biobanking studies. Results Of the 76 subjects who were approached, met the eligibility criteria, and reviewed the consent form, only 16 (21.1%) declined to participate. The consen...

Efficacy of a Breastfeeding Pain Self-Management Intervention: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial
Background Over 90% of women experience pain during breastfeeding initiation and lack strategies to self-manage breast and nipple pain. Guided by the Individual and Family Self-Management Theory, a breastfeeding self-management (BSM) intervention targeted women's knowledge, beliefs, and social facilitation to manage their breast and nipple pain and achieve their breastfeeding goals. Objectives The purpose of this longitudinal pilot randomized control trial (RCT) was to test the preliminary efficacy of the BSM intervention on general and specific pain related to breastfeeding. Methods Sixty women intending to breast...

Interleukin-17A and Chronic Stress in Pregnant Women at 24–28 Weeks Gestation
Discussion Increased levels of IL-17A, a known cytokine associated with chronic stress and with poor perinatal outcomes, were associated with high prenatal distress, low maternal attachment, and lower emotional intelligence in pregnant women. Increased levels of IL-17A also were associated with lower birth weight and non-White race. Results support the model of AL in pregnant women and highlight IL-17A as a potential biomarker of AL during pregnancy. (Source: Nursing Research)

Mortality Risk in Homebound Older Adults Predicted From Routinely Collected Nursing Data
Discussion The AUC and 95% CI for the decision tree are slightly less accurate than logistic regression and ANN; however, the decision tree was more accurate in detecting mortality. The OASIS data set was useful to predict 12-month mortality risk. The decision tree is an interpretable predictive model developed from routinely collected nursing data that may be incorporated into a decision support tool to identify older adults at risk for death. Global Transcriptomic Profile of Dorsal Root Ganglion and Physiological Correlates of Cisplatin-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy
Discussion Nocifensive responses in both strains implicate involvement of small myelinated and unmyelinated fibers in neurotoxic cisplatin response, whereas reductions in NCV reflect involvement of the largest myelinated fibers in the peripheral nerves. Microarray data analysis identifies neuropathy-relevant gene sets with differential activation of pathways, suggesting a role for antigen presentation in the differential neurotoxic response to cisplatin across strains. Further research is indicated to determine the relative contributions of each of these potential pathological mechanisms to both the neurotoxic response t...

Genomics of Reproductive Traits and Cardiometabolic Disease Risk in African American Women
The objectives of this integrative review were to (a) summarize the genome-wide association studies of reproductive traits in African American women, (b) identify genes that overlap with reproductive traits and cardiometabolic risk factors in African American women, and (c) propose biological mechanisms explaining the link between reproductive traits and cardiometabolic risk factors. Methods PubMed was searched for genome-wide association studies of genes associated with reproductive traits in African American women. After extracting and summarizing the primary genes, we examined whether any of the associations with rep...

Characterization of Brain Signatures to Add Precision to Self-Management Health Information Interventions
We describe a program of research addressing the identification of brain biomarkers that differentially predict responses to two types of health information (analytic focused and emotion focused) designed to support optimal self-management of chronic conditions. Methods We pooled data from two pilot studies (N = 52) that included functional magnetic resonance imaging during a specially designed, ecologically valid protocol to examine brain activation (task differentiation) associated with two large-scale neural networks—the Analytic Network and the Empathy Network—and the ventral medial prefrontal cortex while indiv...

Differential Gene Expression in Erlotinib-Treated Fibroblasts
Discussion If found predictive of rash in future studies using patient samples, our findings may help to identify those at risk for severe rash so that (a) the dose of EGFR TKI therapy may be adjusted; (b) additional treatments for the rash can be developed; and/or (c) precise, patient-centered interventions can be developed so that patients with cancer can better self-manage their rash and adhere to EGFR TKI treatment.
