Design and Evaluation of the Electronic Patient-Generated Index
Discussion The pilot study indicates the ePGI may be useful for use at the point of care. Larger studies are needed to explore the influence it may have in decision-making and restructuring patient/provider communication. (Source: Nursing Research)

Neuroimaging Methods for Nursing Science
This article reviews common neuroimaging methods, presents vocabulary frequently used in neuroimaging work, provides information on access to resources in neuroimaging education, and discusses considerations for use of neuroimaging in research. Results Ten imaging modalities are reviewed, including structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, positron emission tomography, and encephalography. Discussion Choosing an imaging modality for research depends on the nature of the research question, needs of the patient population of interest, and resources available to the novice and seasoned n...

Health Literacy and Outcomes of a Community-Based Self-Help Intervention: A Case of Korean Americans With Type 2 Diabetes
Discussion Despite inconsistent findings in the literature, this study indicates that health literacy may indirectly influence health outcomes through mediators such as self-care skills and self-efficacy. The study highlights the importance of health literacy, as well as underlying mechanisms with which health literacy influences processes and outcomes of diabetes self-management. Adherence Self-Management and the Influence of Contextual Factors Among Emerging Adults With Human Immunodeficiency Virus
Discussion Key constructs of the IMB model were applicable to participating HIV-infected youth yet did not fully explain the essence of adherence behavior. As such, we recommend expansion of current adherence models and frameworks to include known contextual factors associated with ART self-management among HIV-infected racial and ethnic minority youth. Nurse Continuity at Discharge and Return to Hospital
Discussion Continuity of nurse assignment on the last 2 days of hospitalization can reduce readmissions. Staffing for continuity may benefit patients and healthcare systems, with greater benefits for high-comorbidity patients. Nurse continuity prior to hospital discharge should be a priority consideration in assigning acute care nurses to augment readmission reduction efforts. (Source: Nursing Research)

Trends in Depressive Symptoms and Suicidality: Youth Risk Behavior Survey 2009–2017
This study used cross-sectional YRBS data (2009–2017) to (a) investigate whether gender moderates the linear time trend for the rate of depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts among high school students within the United States; (b) estimate these same measures stratified by gender; and (c) investigate whether the Healthy People 2020 goal for reduction in suicide attempts was met in 2017 for males and females. Methods Secondary analysis of nationally representative high school students using YRBS data 2009–2017 were analyzed using R and the R survey package. Based on Strengthening the Reporting ...

Prediction of Smoking Abstinence in Women Living With Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection
This study examined whether baseline negative emotional states (depression and anxiety) would predict craving for cigarettes and other nicotine withdrawal symptoms in early abstinence and whether those emotional states and withdrawal symptoms would predict failure in quitting smoking at 3 months postquit among U.S. women living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Method The study is a secondary analysis of data from two smoking cessation studies of women living with HIV. Craving for cigarettes and other withdrawal symptoms were assessed weekly with a total of 229 observations during the first 4 weeks following ...

Self-Management Behaviors, Glycemic Control, and Metabolic Syndrome in Type 2 Diabetes
Discussion Findings suggest that a multifactorial approach may be beneficial when providing care for Chinese with Type 2 diabetes. In addition, these findings provide support for developing and testing tailored interventions that address problem-solving, health literacy, and self-efficacy, among other factors, to help patients achieve optimal glycemic control and thereby reduce their risk for metabolic syndrome and related complications. One Year of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Adherence Improves Cognition in Older Adults With Mild Apnea and Mild Cognitive Impairment
The objective of this study was to explore the effect of CPAP adherence on cognition in older adults with mild obstructive sleep apnea and mild cognitive impairment. Methods We conducted a secondary analysis of data from Memories 1, a 1-year quasiexperimental clinical trial on the effect of CPAP adherence in older adults with mild cognitive impairment and obstructive sleep apnea. Those with mild obstructive sleep apnea were divided into two groups based on their CPAP adherence over 1 year: (a) CPAP adherent group (mild cognitive impairment + CPAP) with an average CPAP use of ≥4 hours per night and (b) CPAP nonadherent...

Transition From Acute to Chronic Pain in Lower Extremity Fracture Patients: A Pain Phenotyping Protocol
Conclusion This study is one of the first to longitudinally characterize the biopsychosocial variables associated with a clinically relevant problem of the transition from acute to chronic posttraumatic fracture pain in individuals with LEFx. Results from this study will be used to construct predictive risk models of physiological, psychological, and genetic/genomic variables associated with increased risk for transitioning from acute to chronic pain status after LEFx. This work will lead to a better understanding of the trajectory of pain and relevant variables over time; initiate a better understanding of variables ass...

Mobile Health Technology for Pediatric Symptom Monitoring: A Feasibility Study
Discussion This pilot study is among the first to explore the feasibility of using mobile technologies to longitudinally obtain patient-generated symptom data to enhance understanding of the PBMT symptom experience. In addition, it will improve our understanding of how these data present, interact, and cluster together throughout the posttransplant period. (Source: Nursing Research)

Two Methods for Calculating Symptom Cluster Scores
This article compares two ways of calculating a single score for a symptom cluster: a conventional, hypothesis-driven composite score versus a data-driven, reduced rank regression score that weights the symptoms based on their individual relationships with key outcomes. Methods We conducted a secondary analysis of psychoneurological symptoms from a sample of 356 low-income mothers. Four of the psychoneurological symptoms (fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, sleep disturbance, and depressed mood) were measured with the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale; the fifth (pain) was measured using an item from the M...

Perceived Infant Well-Being and Self-Reported Distress in Neonatal Nurses
The objective of this descriptive study was to explore associations between nurse perceptions of infant well-being and self-reported distress. Methods Nurses caring for infants with potentially life-threatening/life-limiting conditions were recruited from a Level IV NICU in the Midwestern United States as a part of a study on infant symptom burden. Nurses reported their perceptions of infant well-being and their own distress on a 5-point Likert scale. Surveys were administered at the bedside weekly for up to 12 weeks, depending on length of stay. Infant suffering and QOL were examined in relation to nurse distress. A cr...

Nursing Care for Hospitalized Older Adults With and Without Cognitive Impairment
Discussion Older adults with CI appeared to be undertreated for symptoms of pain when compared to those without CI across units. There is a need for further research to improve symptom recognition and management for this population. The presence of CI was associated with variation in nursing care provided and length of stay. Future studies that include the analysis of nursing data merged with elements stored in the electronic health record representing the contributions of other health professions are expected to provide additional insights into this gap.
