Outcomes of neck modularity in total hip arthroplasty: an Italian perspective
ConclusionThis review showed excellent survival rate and bone stability and good clinical outcomes in Italian cohort patients treated with modular neck THA, and these clinical results are comparable with international cohort rates. This review suggests that modular implants represent a very satisfying choice when practised by expert orthopaedic joint surgeons. (Source: Musculoskeletal Surgery)

Recovery of knee range of motion after total knee arthroplasty in the first postoperative weeks: poor recovery can be detected early
ConclusionsBoth knee flexion and extension recover in a nonlinear manner after TKA surgery. Poor postoperative knee function can be detected early, using ROM data from the first postoperative day up to the fourth week. (Source: Musculoskeletal Surgery)

Is there any difference between tapered titanium stems with similar geometry and hydroxyapatite coating?
ConclusionsLookalike tapered stems with extensive HA coating actually exhibit significant differences in several geometric features potentially affecting their clinical performances. As a result, these stems should not be used indifferently, but rather they should be selected on the basis of the femoral morphology of the operated patient. (Source: Musculoskeletal Surgery)

A combined tension-band braided polyester and suture button technique is a valuable treatment alternative for transverse patellar fractures in athletes
ConclusionThe combination of a suture button fixation and a braided polyester tension-band technique has shown to be a valuable alternative to the fracture management of transverse patella fractures in athletes. This results in fracture healing, low risk of complications and no need for hardware removal. (Source: Musculoskeletal Surgery)

Functional outcome of De Quervain ’s tenosynovitis with longitudinal incision in surgically treated patients
ConclusionSurgical release of De Quervain ’s tenosynovitis remains the gold standard treatment, and longitudinal incision offers advantage of easy identification of compartment, more complete releases of tendon sheath and peritendinous adhesions and less risk of palmar subluxation of tendons. Relationship between hospital size and teaching status on outcomes for reverse shoulder arthroplasty
ConclusionResults from this study indicate that large and non-teaching hospitals overall tend to burden the patients with higher hospital charges, longer hospital stay, and more frequent non-routine discharges. Also, larger hospitals are associated with higher risk of genitourinary and central nervous system complications rates, whereas non-teaching hospitals are associated with lower risk of infection and higher risk of anemia after RSA. With the growth in RSA in the USA, continued attention needs to be placed on improving outcomes and resource utilization for RSA patients even in larger hospitals. (Source: Musculoskeletal Surgery)

Surgical technique and outcomes for bilateral humeral lengthening for achondroplasia: 26-year experience
ConclusionsBilateral humeral elongation yields significant improvements in patient autonomy, with a relatively low complication rate and very high patient satisfaction. (Source: Musculoskeletal Surgery)

PEEK versus metal cages in posterior lumbar interbody fusion: a clinical and radiological comparative study
ConclusionsWe have found a better fusion rate and prevalence of fusion in the group treated with metal cages, reflecting the well-known osteoinductive properties of titanium and tantalum. (Source: Musculoskeletal Surgery)

Long-term deterioration after one-stage unicompartmental knee arthroplasty and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction
ConclusionsCombined UKA and ACL reconstruction can be a therapeutic option for young and active patients with concomitant knee instability and unicompartmental OA. The procedure is highly demanding and reliable only in hands of experienced surgeons. Overall, satisfactory outcome can be achieved at a minimum follow-up of 10  years. However, clinical deterioration can be observed in the long term. (Source: Musculoskeletal Surgery)

Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) in AO/OTA type B displaced clavicle fractures
ConclusionInternal fixation of displaced AO/OTA type B clavicle fractures by MIPO showed high fracture union rates and good functional outcomes. (Source: Musculoskeletal Surgery)

Single-stage anterior debridement, posterior instrumentation and global fusion in thoracic and thoracolumbar tubercular spondylodiscitis
ConclusionThe surgical technique described in this study had favourable clinical and radiological outcomes. Early surgery helps in having a definitive diagnosis and detects the presence of drug-resistant strains. (Source: Musculoskeletal Surgery)

Primary cemented bipolar radial head prostheses for acute elbow injuries with comminuted radial head fractures: mid-term results of 37 patients
ConclusionPrimary cemented bipolar arthroplasty for type III fractures according to Mason ’s classification in an elbow injury pattern only including associated coronoid fractures and/or ligamentous tears resulted in good-to-excellent mid-term results. These results suggest that primary bipolar radial head arthroplasty combined with distinct treatment of all associated injuries provide s good functional outcomes concerning range of motion, elbow stability, and strength in this cohort. However, the associated injuries may influence clinical and radiological outcome and need to be detected, classified, and treated carefull...

Surgical treatment of pediatric supracondylar humerus fracture could be safely performed by general orthopedists
ConclusionsPediatric SCHF could be efficiently managed by a general orthopedic surgeon because the radiographic outcomes and complications were comparable to pediatric fellowship-trained orthopedists. Extra precautions need to be exercised in SCHF Gartland type 3 because the chance of complications is higher among these types of injuries.Level of evidenceLevel III. Bilateral unicompartmental knee arthroplasty: one stage or two stages?
ConclusionOur results demonstrated that bilateral simultaneous UKA does not increase the risk for perioperative complications. Total blood loss at discharge is statistically higher in bilateral UKA rather than unilateral UKA; however, cumulative hemoglobin loss is statistically lower in bilateral group. Patients can benefit from a single hospital admission and anesthetic time, while the shorter total inpatient stay and lower blood loss can reduce hospital costs in cases of bilateral surgery.Level of evidence IVRetrospective study. Meeting patient expectations: patient expectations and recovery after hip or knee surgery
ConclusionsAlthough an expectation for an outcome was not related to a greater improvement on that outcome, patient expectations were an indication of patients ’ improvement due to surgery. Differences in expectation fulfilment may be due to unrealistic expectations. To achieve optimal value, tailoring treatment using patient preferences and managing patient expectations is vital.
