Short-term results of a new self-locking cementless femoral stem: a prospective cohort study of the Lima Master SL
ConclusionsThe MasterSL femoral stem performed well in this short-term follow-up study, with high patient satisfaction and good signs of osteointegration. Long-term follow-up will be necessary to evaluate longevity.Level of evidenceLevel 3, Prospective cohort study.Trial registrationThe study was registered on the 30.03.2016 with Australia New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ACTRN12617000550303). Intercostal or ulnar nerve: Which donor nerve is to be used for reanimation of elbow flexion?
ConclusionThe evidence from the present study indicates that although ICN –MCN transfer is a viable method for reanimation of elbow flexion in BPI, mFCU nerve is a better donor if exists. (Source: Musculoskeletal Surgery)

Arthroscopic partial repair with versus without biodegradable subacromial spacer for patients with massive rotator cuff tears: a case –control study
ConclusionArthroscopic partial repair, either with or without ISB implantation, resulted in significantly improved clinical and functional short-term outcomes for the treatment of MRCT. Patients who were treated with combined partial repair and ISB implantation had a potential propensity toward better functional outcomes and higher patient satisfaction compared to the single-partial-repair-treated group. However, given that these differences were not significant, we feel that further studies are required to clarify the potential therapeutic value of ISB implantation in the treatment of irreparable MRCT.Level of EvidenceLev...

Neurolysis versus anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve in cubital tunnel syndrome: a 12  years single secondary specialist centre experience
ConclusionsIn our experience, the surgical technique to treat the cubital tunnel syndrome most efficiently and feasibly has not yet been established in terms of indications and outcomes. This is supported by the data present in the international literature. Good and similar results were obtained with neurolysis alone and neurolysis associated with anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve (in line with the international data). In conclusion, more high-quality studies of greater statistical power are needed to provide a consensus on the surgical indications and techniques to treat the cubital tunnel syndrome and to establis...

Management of high-grade hallux rigidus: a narrative review of the literature
AbstractHallux rigidus is a disease characterized by an osteoarthritic degeneration of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Aetiology of hallux rigidus is not clear in the literature. History of trauma is considered one of the most common causes of unilateral hallux rigidus. Also, repetitive microtraumas or inflammatory and metabolic causes such as gout, rheumatoid arthritis and seronegative arthropathy can cause degeneration of the joint. The aim of this literature narrative overview is to summarize and expose the great amount of management concepts and information, including the well-codified main operative procedures to...

Total hip arthroplasty and sexual activity: a systematic review
AbstractHip discomfort due to degenerative pathologies causes limitations in the everyday activities of patients, including sexual activity. To address such limitations, patients are usually treated with total hip arthroplasty (THA). The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the success of this surgical procedure to ameliorate sexual activity of patients. We performed a comprehensive research of four electronic databases for articles pertaining to the benefits of THA  on sexual activity. Exclusion criteria included articles not in English. The search initially yielded 34 articles. Two authors subsequently read ...

Surgical treatment of traumatic thoracolumbar fractures: a retrospective review of 101 cases
ConclusionsThis study confirmed the validity of the posterior approach in the surgical treatment of thoracolumbar fractures. Outcomes and complication risks are related to fracture severity. Surgical treatment can be recommended even with an AOSIS score of two or three. The combined antero-posterior approach could be useful in cases with LSC  >  8, especially in the thoracolumbar region. The degree of neurological recovery depends on fracture type, location, ASIA score and presence of comorbidities. Early intervention in myelic patients allows for a better prognosis.Level of evidence III retrospective case series. (...

Proximal humeral fracture in patients with high Charlson comorbidity index: mortality rate according to treatment choice
ConclusionsPatients with high preinjury comorbidities (CCI  >  5) experienced an increased mortality risk if they underwent surgical treatment for isolated PHFs. The use of a morbidity prognostic tool, such as the CCI, can help predict the outcome (particularly mortality) in these patients and may aid in making decisions in terms of operative versus non-oper ative treatment to minimize patient mortality.Level of evidenceLevel III; Retrospective Comparative Study; Treatment Study. Revisiting the tibial crest as reference for the mechanical alignment of the tibial component in total knee arthroplasty: a cadaveric study on Caucasian tibiae
ConclusionThe TC of Caucasian subjects exhibits a marked variability in its course and relationship with the MA. Unlike the TC in Asian subjects, the TC of Caucasians cannot be considered an accurate anatomical reference to guide the coronal alignment of the tibial component in TKA. Hip resurfacing as an outpatient procedure: a comparison of overall cost and review of safety
This study aims to evaluate the cost-effectiveness and safety of outpatient hip resurfacing. Two experienced surgeons performed 485 resurfacing surgeries. We retrospectively compared clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction with published outpatient total hip results. Furthermore, we compared average insurance reimbursement with that of local inpatient hip replacement. No major complications occurred within 6  weeks. Of the 39 patients with previous inpatient experience, 37 (95%) believed their outpatient experience was superior. The average reimbursement for hip arthroplasty at local hospitals was $50,000, while the av...

Direct anterior approach and dual mobility cup: the “head-first” reduction technique: a technical note and early case series
ConclusionsSpecific difficulties can be anticipated when pairing dual mobility cup and direct anterior approach. The “head-first” technique is a useful technique in reducing the possible difficulties related to the reduction of double mobility cup through a less invasive direct anterior approach. Two different posterior-stabilized mobile-bearing TKA designs: navigator evaluation of intraoperative kinematic differences
ConclusionDespite design variations, no difference has been found among the prostheses in terms of PROM, rotations and translations. Both design kinematics did not show paradoxical external rotations, but an increase in femoral translation in mid-flexion without affecting the functioning of the prosthesis.Level of evidenceII.
