The Role of the Obturator Internus Muscle in Pelvic Floor Function
Conclusion: Strengthening of muscles surrounding PFM such as the OI could improve PFM strength (peak pressure) in nulliparous women, indicating that muscles other than the pelvic floor may be appropriate for rehabilitation. (Source: Journal of Women’s Health Physical Therapy)

The Peripheral Neuroanatomy of the Pelvic Floor
Conclusion: This article describes the anatomy and convergence of the pelvic peripheral nerves. Afferent and efferent pathways of the pelvic viscera are diagrammed and related to the musculoskeletal innervations of the pelvis and to pelvic pain patterns and behaviors to assist clinicians in understanding and interpreting pelvic pain in women. Physical Therapy Intervention for Treatment of Blocked Milk Ducts in Lactating Women
Conclusion: Comprehensive physical therapy intervention was effective in clearing blocked milk ducts that had not responded to self-clearing methods. It significantly reduced pain and difficulty breast-feeding while improving patients' confidence in ability to manage breast-feeding independently. Postpartum Femoral Nerve Palsy: A Case Study and the Role of Electrophysiologic Testing and Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation
Discussion: Quadriceps, but not iliopsoas, involvement suggested femoral nerve entrapment distal to the inguinal ligament—a rare presentation with more common symptoms being only sensory (ie, meralgia paresthestica) or involving the iliopsoas. Greater than 50% axon loss initially, but less than 50% at 6 weeks, suggested neuropraxia with rapidly recovering partial conduction block underlying the neurophysiologic findings. Early identification and supportive neuromuscular electrical stimulation for motor recovery likely facilitated resolution of the impairment. (Source: Journal of Women’s Health Physical Therapy)

A Preliminary Study on Balance Performance and Fall Status in Older Women With Urinary Incontinence
Conclusion: Worse balance performance and UI presence appear to be linked in this sample of women. The results of this pilot study emphasize the need to screen for UI and fall risk in older women with either condition. (Source: Journal of Women’s Health Physical Therapy)

The Effects of Home-Based Pilates in Healthy College-Aged Women
Conclusion: Pilates practice resulted in gains in balance and hamstring flexibility among college-aged women. Limitations in this study, including the unknown level of activity of the control group, warrant further investigation. Additional research is needed to determine whether Pilates has a significant effect on core endurance, body composition, and perceived stress level. The Effectiveness of Exercise in Treatment of Pregnancy-Related Lumbar and Pelvic Girdle Pain: A Meta-Analysis and Evidence-Based Review
Discussion: To relieve pain and possibly improve function during advancing pregnancy, women with pregnancy-related LBPGP may benefit from a 10-week program of supervised, functional, progressive core-focused exercise and/or yoga program, including a home exercise component.
