Effects of Branched-Chain Amino Acid Supplementation on Spontaneous Seizures and Neuronal Viability in a Model of Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy
Conclusions: Acute BCAA supplementation reduces seizure propagation, whereas chronic oral supplementation with BCAAs worsens seizure propagation and causes neuron loss in rodents with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. These findings raise the question of whether such supplementation has a similar effect in humans. (Source: Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology)

Regional Cerebral Oxygen Saturation Changes After Decompressive Craniectomy for Malignant Cerebral Venous Thrombosis: A Prospective Cohort Study
Conclusions: Patients with malignant CVT had a lower rSO2 on ipsilateral side of the lesion, which improved significantly after DC. Preoperative rSO2 was not correlated with the duration of hospital stay. (Source: Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology)

Incidence and Risk Factors for Intraoperative Seizures During Elective Craniotomy
Background: Perioperative seizures may affect 1% to 50% of patients undergoing craniotomy and adversely impact outcomes. However, data on intraoperative seizures are limited. This retrospective case-control study investigated the incidence and risk factors for intraoperative seizures during elective supratentorial craniotomy involving evoked potential monitoring. Materials and Methods: Patients aged 18 years or above undergoing elective supratentorial craniotomy with evoked potential monitoring who experienced intraoperative seizures at our institution between December 2008 and March 2014 were compared with a control ...

Inflammatory Markers in Serum and Cerebrospinal Fluid for Early Detection of External Ventricular Drain–associated Ventriculitis in Patients With Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
We examined the diagnostic potential of standard serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers to differentiate between EVD-associated infections and aseptic courses in patients with aSAH. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the levels of inflammatory markers in serum (white blood cell count, percentage of neutrophils [sN%], and procalcitonin) and CSF (total leukocyte count [CSFTLC], CSFglucose, CSF/serumglucose ratio, CSF total protein [CSFTP]) of 63 consecutive patients with aSAH. Receiver operating characteristic curves and the area-under-the-curve (AUC) were calculated to detect the diagnostic poten...
