Understanding Clinical Characteristics of Muscle Weakness
CONCLUSIONS: The characteristics of muscle weakness identified in our study are markedly different from those included in National Library of Medicine definitions. As a condition, muscle weakness has both subjective and objective traits. Therefore, clinician assessment and patient input combined capture the comprehensive nature of muscle weakness. Nurses' awareness of what constitutes muscle weakness, regardless of diagnosis, is the first step in optimal management of this condition. (Source: Journal of Neuroscience Nursing)

Older Spousal Dyads and the Experience of Recovery in the Year After Traumatic Brain Injury
CONCLUSIONS: Feelings of hope, gratitude, and acceptance serve as vital ways for couples to continue toward a path of recovery and healing. Lack of social support was a stressor, creating a barrier to recovery. Significant others tended to focus on others versus self-care needs. Nurses should integrate social support and self-care into the assessment of the spousal dyad after TBI. These findings can also inform the development of support groups and case management models for both patients after TBI and their significant others. (Source: Journal of Neuroscience Nursing)

Contribution of Patient Care Technicians to the Prevention of External Ventricular Drain Infection: A Retrospective Study
This study retrospectively screened patients who underwent EVD procedures in our medical center from January 2012 to June 2018. Clinical characteristics including EVD-related infection rates of patients with or without PCTs were compared. RESULTS: We analyzed 234 patients in total. There were 26 EVD infection cases, and the overall infection rate was 11.1%. There were 122 patients who were given additional care by PCTs. They were elder (58.1 ± 13.1 vs 49.9 ± 17.0 years old, P (Source: Journal of Neuroscience Nursing)

The Effect of Using Eye Masks and Earplugs on Intensive Care Patients Quality of Sleep and Vital Signs
This study aimed to investigate the effect of eye masks and earplugs on the sleep quality and vital signs of conscious ICU patients. METHODS: This study used a quasi-experimental, in similar groups, pretest-posttest design with a control group. The Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (RCSQ) was used to collect data, and vital signs were recorded every 2 hours. On day 1, standard care was provided to the experimental group (n = 32), and they were provided with eye masks and earplugs on day 2. The control group (n = 32) was provided with standard care on both days. Chi-square, t, and McNemar and McNemar-Bowker tests were u...

Embolic Stroke of Undetermined Source: A Primer for Nursing
CONCLUSION: Because of the complexity of the evaluation and the uncertainty associated with an unknown cause of stroke, neuroscience nurses caring for these patients should be familiar with ESUS and educate the patient about the condition and the importance of complying with all prescribed treatments, tests, and subsequent follow-up appointments after discharge. The Experiences and Evaluation of a Complex Intervention for Couples Coping With Stroke
CONCLUSION: New knowledge has been gained that the 3H intervention is useful and may be implemented in a clinical context before a patient's discharge from hospital. As a result of participating in the 3H intervention, effective coping was evident where participants engaged in conversations, cultivated a sense of support, and fulfilled their educational needs. Primary healthcare professionals should pay more attention to the difficulties and needs of this group of people, provide more resources to support them, and improve their quality of life. Safety of Ventricular Reservoir Sampling in Pediatric Posthemorrhagic Hydrocephalus Patients: Institutional Experience and Review of the Literature
CONCLUSION: A standardized VAD access kit, along with stringent adherence to access protocol, can significantly minimize risk of infection associated with serial VAD access. These principles can be generalized to percutaneous aspiration of CSF from subcutaneous reservoirs placed for other indications to promote safety and sterility of this common procedure.
