Caregiver Burden and Associated Factors Among Informal Caregivers of Stroke Survivors
BACKGROUND: Informal caregiving of stroke survivors often begins with intensity compared with the linear caregiving trajectories in progressive conditions. Informal caregivers of stroke survivors are often inadequately prepared for their caregiving role, which can have detrimental effects on their well-being. A greater depth of understanding about caregiving burden is needed to identify caregivers in most need of intervention. The purpose of this study was to examine caregiver burden and associated factors among a cohort of informal caregivers of stroke survivors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 88 informal caregivers ...

Continuous Electroencephalographic Training for Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit Nurses: A Feasibility Study
BACKGROUND: Use of continuous electroencephalographic (cEEG) monitoring has more than doubled at our institution for the last 4 years. Although intensive care unit cEEG is reviewed remotely by board-certified epileptologists every 4 to 6 hours, there are inherent delays between occurrence, recognition, and treatment of epileptiform activity. Neuroscience intensive care unit (NSICU) nurses are uniquely positioned to monitor cEEG in real time yet do not receive formal training. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an education program to teach nurses to monitor cEEG, identify a burst suppression pat...

Day-to-Day Change in Pulsatility Index Describes Anterior Cerebral Circulation Disturbance and Functional Outcomes in Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury
This study is the first to report day-to-day PI change in children with TBI and provides early insights into anterior cerebral artery circulation alterations of children with TBI. Although further research is needed, this study provides early evidence that TCD may be a valuable noninvasive neuromonitoring option in the management of children with TBI. Assessing Postvoid Residual to Identify Risk for Urinary Complications Post Stroke
CONCLUSION: Identifying the risk for urinary complications post stroke can lead to early interventions that can improve recovery. This also allows for specific patient education related to preventative measures to reduce risk of urinary complications. The use of a specific bladder scanning protocol is recommended as standard practice for all patients admitted with stroke. (Source: Journal of Neuroscience Nursing)
