Factors that Influence Door-to-Needle Administration for Acute Stroke Patients in the Emergency Department
CONCLUSION: Although many factors can influence door-to-needle times in the ED, we did not find National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score on arrival and time of day to be significant factors. Patients arriving to the ED by personal vehicle will have a significant delay in IV alteplase administration, therefore emphasizing the importance of using emergency medical services. Perhaps more importantly, collaborative efforts including the addition of a specialized stroke nurse significantly decreased time to IV alteplase administration for AIS patients. With this dedicated role, accelerated triage and more effective mana...

The Effects of Video Instruction on Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit Nursing Skills in Case Presentations and Neurological Examinations
CONCLUSIONS: Surgical intensive care unit nurses who underwent direct observation and self-evaluation had improvement in physician-rated NSICU nursing skills, likely as these activities allowed for reflective observation in Kolb's experiential learning cycle. Greater improvement in participants who viewed an instructional video highlights its value as a teaching modality for nurses. (Source: Journal of Neuroscience Nursing)

Factors Associated With Emergency Department Length of Stay and In-hospital Mortality in Intracerebral Hemorrhage Patients
BACKGROUND: Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a medical emergency that requires rapid identification and focused assessment early to ensure the best possible outcomes. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the associations between system and patient factors and emergency department (ED) length of stay and in-hospital mortality in patients given a diagnosis of ICH. METHODS: A sample of 3108 ICH patients was selected from a statewide administrative database for cross-sectional retrospective analysis. System characteristic (hospital stroke certification), patient characteristics (age, sex, and race), and covari...

Effectiveness of a Delirium Prevention Initiative on an Inpatient Neuroscience Unit
This study is a quality improvement project using a pretest-posttest design to examine the benefits of refocusing care from delirium management to delirium prevention. The sample included 304 patients pre and 332 post intervention. The interventions included delirium education for nurses and the recruitment of trained volunteers to implement nonpharmacological, multicomponent delirium prevention interventions. RESULTS: Forty-eight nurses completed delirium education, and 11 volunteers were recruited and trained. There was a significant increase in nursing knowledge (z = 3.967, P (Source: Journal of Neuroscience Nursing)
