Ultrasonography in undergraduate medical education: a comprehensive review and the education program implemented at Jichi Medical University
AbstractThe concept of point-of-care ultrasound has been widely accepted owing to the development of portable ultrasound systems and growing body of evidence concerning its extensive utility. Thus, it is reasonable to suggest that training to use this modality be included in undergraduate medical education. Training in ultrasonography helps medical students learn basic subjects such as anatomy and physiology, improve their physical examination skills, and acquire diagnostic and procedural skills. Technological advances such as simulators, affordable handheld devices, and tele-ultrasound systems can facilitate undergraduate...

Development and future prospective of treatment for localized prostate cancer with high-intensity focused ultrasound
AbstractHigh-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) was experimentally used for focal therapy for anti-cancer effects in prostate cancer (PC). Focal therapy is a diagnosis-based investigational treatment option for localized PC that cures clinically significant PC (csPC) while preserving the anatomical structures related to urinary and sexual function based on its spread observed using multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI). The European Association of Urology indicated that the current status of focal therapy for localized PC was an investigational modality and encouraged prospective recording of outcomes and re...

Age-related etiologies of aortic regurgitation with moderate or greater severity and coronary cusp bending: evaluation using transesophageal echocardiography
ConclusionCusp bending was the most frequent etiology of AR in the elderly. Preoperative detection of cusp bending by TEE would expand the therapeutic strategy for AR, including aortic valvuloplasty. (Source: Journal of Medical Ultrasonics)

Cardiac and vascular point-of-care ultrasound: current situation, problems, and future prospects
AbstractAlthough clinical application of ultrasound to the heart has a history of about 80  years, its big turning point was the emergence of a portable ultrasound diagnostic machine. As a result, the place, where echocardiography is performed widely spread outside the examination room, and the people who perform echocardiography have also greatly increased. Emergency physicians, anesthe siologists, and primary care physicians became interested in echocardiography and started using it. Such ultrasound examinations performed by a doctor for assessment of disease condition, management, or guidance of treatment at bedside ha...

The diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound and upper gastrointestinal contrast studies for locating atresia/stenosis and intestinal malrotation and detecting annular pancreas in pediatric patients with duodenal atresia/stenosis
ConclusionsUltrasound has a relatively high capability in locating atresia/stenosis. However, some cases are misdiagnosed. In clinical practice, upper gastrointestinal contrast studies should be used complementarily during diagnosis. Additional anomalies may not be detected by preoperative examinations; therefore, surgeons should carefully evaluate for additional anomalies during surgery, especially coexisting intestinal malrotation and annular pancreas. Displacement detection with sub-pixel accuracy and high spatial resolution using deep learning
ConclusionTwo-dimensional and sub-pixel displacement detection with high spatial resolution was realized using a deep-learning methodology. The proposed method enabled the monitoring of small and local tissue deformations induced by HIFU exposure. (Source: Journal of Medical Ultrasonics)

Vascular access management of hemodialysis patients at the bedside using point-of-care ultrasound
AbstractWhen vascular access (VA) for hemodialysis is established using an autologous fistula or synthetic graft, repeated damage from needle insertion at each dialysis session can lead to thrombosis, resulting in vascular stenosis or occlusion that can cause poor blood removal, elevated venous pressure, and other impairments of blood flow. Compact, high-performance ultrasound devices have been developed in recent years. Such devices are used for point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), which has been used on many occasions for emergency evaluation in the dialysis room and is becoming an important tool in VA management. POCUS pro...

Feasibility of endoscopic ultrasonography using a 60-MHz ultrasound miniature probe in the upper gastrointestinal tract
ConclusionThe 60-MHz probe provided good visualization of the muscularis mucosae and structure of the layers down to the submucosa, which improves the ability to diagnose the depth of early cancer invasion of the upper gastrointestinal tract, leading to more appropriate treatments.
