Diagnostic accuracy of transient elastography in diagnosing clinically significant portal hypertension in patients with chronic liver disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsLiver stiffness measurement using TE correlates well with HVPG, and a liver stiffness cut-off value of 22.8  kPa shows a high accuracy for diagnosing CSPH. Thus, use of TE should be integrated into clinical practice for noninvasive diagnosis of CSPH. (Source: Journal of Medical Ultrasonics)

Association of amniotic fluid natriuretic peptide levels with ductus venosus Doppler flow in recipient twins with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome
ConclusionA positive correlation between the DV-PI and afNT-proBNP levels of recipient twins with TTTS was observed. The recipient twin with an increased DV-PI is expected to be under a high cardiac load; therefore, DV-PI is a useful parameter for assessing increased NT-proBNP levels consecutively and noninvasively.Clinical Trial RegistrationThis study was registered with Japanese Clinical Trial Registry “UMIN-CTR” (http://www.umin.ac.jp/ctr/index-j.htm; trial ID numbers UMIN000024486 and 000037702). Evaluation of local changes in radio-frequency signal waveform and brightness caused by vessel dilatation for ascertaining reliability of elasticity estimation inside heterogeneous plaque: a preliminary study
ConclusionAs a preliminary study, this study provides a clue to assert the reliability of elasticity estimates for a region with high correlation and positive strain in the plaque based on measurable properties. (Source: Journal of Medical Ultrasonics)

Analysis of the relationship between the amplitude of aortic wall motion and heart function
ConclusionBecause E/e ’ correlated with AMAW in patients with an EF of <  60% or ≥ 60%, AMAW might be an indicator of left atrial pressure elevation. Moreover, because AMAW correlated with baPWV in patients with an EF of ≥ 60%, changes in the restricted left atrial volume might influence diastolic dysfunction. AMAW may be related to cardiac and vessel funct ions. (Source: Journal of Medical Ultrasonics)

Dynamic response of medial meniscus extrusion to the lateral wedge insole is correlated with immediate pain reduction in knee osteoarthritis patients: real-time ultrasonographic study
ConclusionsOur findings showed that MME and knee pain during walking decreased with LWI use, especially in patients whose reduction in knee pain was characterised by inhibition in the increase in MME observed during dynamic evaluation with ultrasound. (Source: Journal of Medical Ultrasonics)

Diagnosis of heart failure in the elderly: current status and future perspectives for echocardiographic diagnostic systems
This article will focus on the HFpEF diagnostic algorithm proposed in 2018 by the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology (HFA-PEFF score) based on autologous elderly cases. We compared the usefulness of the HFA-PEFF score with the ASE/EACVI algorithm. By comparing HFpEF patients with healthy elderly subjects and hypertensive patients with no history of HF, this paper will identify the usefulness and challenges of the HFA-PEFF score in the assessment of the elderly. The echocardiographic findings in at-risk or early-stage elderly patients with HFpEF will also be summarized. In addition, this review ...

Treatment of secondary mitral regurgitation by transcatheter edge-to-edge repair using MitraClip
AbstractTranscatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) is becoming the standard invasive treatment for ventricular functional mitral regurgitation (MR). It is necessary to determine the severity of MR before treatment with MitraClip; however, the severity of secondary MR is usually underestimated compared with that of primary MR and varies temporally. Therefore, to accurately determine the severity of MR, it is important to correctly use the algorithm of the guidelines for valvular heart disease and aggressively perform stress echocardiography. Before performing TEER, the difficulty of the procedure should be evaluated. First, m...

Hypertensive disorders and maternal hemodynamic changes in pregnancy: monitoring by USCOM ® device
AbstractHypertensive disorders are quite common, complicating about 10% of pregnancies, while preeclampsia occurs in 2 –8% of cases. The most recognized etiopathogenetic factor for the development of preeclampsia is deficient remodeling of the spiral arteries during trophoblastic invasion. Recently, some authors speculated about the “cardiovascular origin of preeclampsia”; in particular, they postulate that pl acental dysfunction is not theprimum movens of preeclampsia, but it could be caused by a failure of the maternal cardiovascular system to adapt to the pregnancy itself. Moreover, several studies have also shown...
