Pre- and post-treatment in flexor tendon tenolysis: An observational study
Glide deficit of the distal flexors ’ tendons following primary repair in zone 1–3 are very common. Adhesions of tendons have multi factorial origins and are closely related to the healing of the affected tissues. The surgical practice used to resolve these complications is tenolysis. Treatment of trigger finger with metacarpophalangeal joint blocking orthosis vs relative motion extension orthosis: A randomized clinical trial
The metacarpophalangeal joint blocking orthosis (MCPJ-BO) is one of the first-line orthotic treatment for patients with trigger finger (TF). Relative motion extension orthosis (RME-O) has recently emerged as a treatment option for various hand disorders involving TF. (Source: Journal of Hand Therapy)

Reliability, validity and responsiveness of composite finger flexion in patients with traumatic hand injuries: A clinical measurement study
Composite finger flexion (CFF) is proposed to be a convenient alternative to total active motion (TAM) and total passive motion (TPM). Passive CFF (PCFF) may be useful for early monitoring in post-operative rehabilitation of traumatic hand injuries. (Source: Journal of Hand Therapy)

Orthotic interventions for restoring proximal interphalangeal joint motion for patients with hand injuries or conditions: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Limitations to proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) motion can result in significant functional impairment for people with hand injuries and conditions. The role of orthotic intervention to improve PIPJ motion has been studied; however, high-quality systematic reviews and meta-analyses are lacking. (Source: Journal of Hand Therapy)

Patients living with upper extremity arthritis may experience limitations in physical, mental, and social health: A technical report
In this collaboration between the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT) and the Arthritis Foundation, ASHT members were requested to recruit current patients, patients ’ family/friends, and community members as participants. The cross-sectional descriptive survey study included 34 individuals (28 males) living with arthritis who had self-reported or therapist-identified involvement of the upper extremity (UE). Seventy-five participants initiated the survey, and participants were excluded if they reported no UE involvement, reported UE surgery in the past 6 months, or were missing the UE-specific outcome measure. (S...

A randomized clinical trial on the changing of median nerve cross-sectional area and pain after extracorporeal shock wave and low-level laser therapy added to conventional physical therapy in patients with mild-to-moderate carpal tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common mononeuropathy in the upper limb. It remains uncertain whether adding extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) or low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to conventional treatment benefits CTS patients. (Source: Journal of Hand Therapy)

Management of everyday life after a hand operation —A qualitative study of patients with a weak sense of coherence
A hand-related disorder (HRD) has a more significant impact on participation in everyday life for patients with a weak sense of coherence (SOC) compared to those with a strong SOC. Therefore, understanding how patients with a weak SOC manage the conditions of everyday life after a hand operation is of clinical interest. (Source: Journal of Hand Therapy)

Scoping review and systematic reviews are both valuable, but serve different purposes
Although most people are familiar with systematic reviews, there are a wide variety of types of evidence synthesis that serve different purposes. Evidence synthesis can summarize one type of research like randomized controlled trials as often happens in systematic reviews of effectiveness studies. However, evidence synthesis can also summarize qualitative research and other study designs. Systematic reviews focus on identifying and synthesizing the highest quality of evidence through highly standardized procedures that include how the literature is searched, the critical appraisal tools used, how the literature is synthesi...

Proprioception: An evidence-based review
Proprioception is an essential sensory function of the body. Proprioception is defined as one ’s awareness of their body’s position and movement through space. It contributes to both the conscious and unconscious awareness of limb and trunk position and movement. The purpose of this review is to provide an evidence-based review of proprioception and conditions that interfere with proprio ceptive acuity. (Source: Journal of Hand Therapy)

The Functional Dexterity Test in Adult Populations: An Exploration of a Simplified Test Protocol and Parameters Guided by Statistical Outcomes
The Functional Dexterity Test (FDT) is a standardized assessment used to quantify dexterity, in-hand manipulation, related to function. Recommendations to modify the scoring have been proposed to eliminate penalties, adapt the test protocol, and change the outcome parameter. A new psychometrically sound scoring system has been used in the pediatric population; however, research in the adult population requires exploration. (Source: Journal of Hand Therapy)

Practitioners in the hand therapy field report a need for increased structured education opportunities
An online survey was developed to assess the need and desire for structured education for certified hand therapy preparation. The survey assessed the opinions of currently practicing certified hand therapists and those seeking to become a certified hand therapist (CHT). The survey addressed basic information regarding education, practice experience, and practice settings, as well as experiences and opinions regarding the CHT credential. The survey targeted licensed occupational therapists and physical therapists who currently practice hand therapy or are interested in hand therapy practice. (Source: Journal of Hand Therapy)

Comparison of the physiotherapy with and without focus on the scapulothoracic joint on pain, range of motion, functional disability, quality of life, and treatment effectiveness of patients after arthroscopic shoulder rotator cuff tendon repair: A randomized controlled trial with short-term follow-up
Rotator cuff tears are prevalent shoulder injuries, significantly affecting shoulder stabilization and patient quality of life. Despite rehabilitation efforts post-arthroscopic surgery, the efficacy of scapular-focused exercises remains uncertain with limited supportive evidence. (Source: Journal of Hand Therapy)

Proprioception evaluation and treatment: Hand therapist practice patterns
Little is known about how hand therapists assess proprioception and treat deficits in clinical practice and what types of diagnoses they see most often. To our knowledge, no survey has been completed regarding proprioception practice patterns among hand therapists. (Source: Journal of Hand Therapy)
