The patient-rated wrist and hand evaluation was successfully translated to the Slovenian language
The patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) are nowadays considered a constituent part of the rehabilitation assessment. With the aim of reliably comparing the results among different studies, widely used outcome measures are to be encouraged for the assessment. To overcome the language and cultural differences, the PROM must follow the uniform cross-cultural translation procedure to ensure the translated version assesses the same construct as the original version. The Patient-Rated Wrist and Hand Evaluation (PRWHE) is one of the widely used PROMs in the hand rehabilitation. (Source: Journal of Hand Therapy)

Effectiveness of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation therapy and strength training among post-menopausal women with thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis. A randomized trial
Thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis (CMC OA) presents with localized pain at the base of the thumb, restricted thumb mobility, and muscle weakness. It is one of the most common causes of upper limb-related disability in Europe and the United States.1-4 CMC OA has a higher incidence in women than men5-6 and this increases exponentially in post-menopausal women.6-7 Between the ages of 50 and 60, it affects over 66% of women, becoming a highly prevalent disease.7-8 The symptoms affect the women's ability to perform certain daily living activities such as opening a jar, turning a key in a lock, opening food packets, and wring...

Accelerated rehabilitation following thumb ulnar collateral ligament repair with suture tape augmentation: A case series of professional basketball players
Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries comprise 86% of all athletic thumb metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint injuries.1 Sprains and partial ruptures can be treated non-operatively in a thumb spica orthosis for 6 weeks followed by the range of motion exercises.2,3 For acute complete thumb MCP UCL rupture and Stener lesions (interposition of the adductor pollicis aponeurosis between the ruptured UCL and its normal attachment site on the proximal phalanx), operative treatment may be necessary for restoring stability and pinch strength. Shoulder structure and function:  The impact of osteoarthritis and rehabilitation strategies
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a highly prevalent disease that significantly increases healthcare expenditures. Nearly half of Americans over the age of 65 have OA, and this rate continues to increase with the aging population.1 Those affected by OA frequently present with multiple co-morbidities, resulting in a decrease in function and further increasing healthcare utilization.2,3 The poor mobility, decreased function, and pain that manifest in OA can lead to a significant reduction in the quality of life. Recruiting hand therapists improves disposal of unused opioid medication
The incidence of opioid-related deaths in the United States continues to rise, along with opioid-related criminal activity, addiction, and imprisonment.1,2 The opioid crisis has unfortunately been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.3 It is well-established that opioids are important in managing post-operative pain,4 yet opioid dependence due to prescription drug use has become widespread. Recent literature describes surgery as the gatekeeper to our nation's “painkiller epidemic.”5-8 Furthermore, prolonged opioid use following hand surgery is significantly higher compared to abdominal, thoracic, and knee and hip surge...

Case report illustrating use of serial elastic tension digital neoprene orthoses (ETDNO) protocol in the treatment of proximal interphalangeal joint flexion contracture
Stiffness of the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) is one of the most frequent problems encountered after hand trauma1 and immobilization.2,3 As the wound healing process advances into the remodeling phase, lack of appropriate tensile forces can result in shortened and less extensible scar tissue. At this point in the healing process, stiffness becomes difficult to modify.2 After trauma, scar tissue affects anatomical structures and spaces through arthrofibrosis and contracture.3 The PIPJ assumes the loose pack position in mid-flexion,4 Edema then takes up space in the redundant tissues and further restricts motion. (S...

(Re-)Defining ergonomics in hand therapy: Applications for the management of upper extremity osteoarthritis
In older adults, upper extremity osteoarthritis (OA) is the primary cause of disability,1,2 with nearly half of all individuals with arthritis reporting activity limitations due to their diagnosis.3 The uncertainty and unpredictable nature of the disease can cause significant physical limitations in numerous areas of daily life functioning and impact an individual's overall quality of life.4 The most prevalent symptoms include hand deformities, pain, reduced grip strength, and inflammation, which can lead to loss of independence for completing simple daily tasks, work instability, unemployment, and financial difficulties, ...

A literature review of carpal tunnel syndrome and its association with body mass index, wrist ratio, wrist to palm ratio, and shape index
Entrapment neuropathies are considered among the most commonly reported mononeuropathies, where a nerve is damaged at the passage site through narrow, confined spaces.1,2 Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common tubular neuropathies in the upper extremity musculoskeletal system and a cause of hand pain and dysfunction.3-5 CTS is caused by compression of the median nerve (MN) at the wrist passing through a narrow osteofibrous canal known as the carpal tunnel. The MN runs through several hard tissues inside the canal: the wrist bones, transverse carpal ligament, and the nine digital flexor tendons. (Source: Jou...

Effectiveness of high intensity laser therapy on pain, grip strength and median nerve conductivity in pregnant women with carpal tunnel syndrome: A randomized controlled trial
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is an entrapment of the median nerve accounting for 90% of all entrapment neuropathies.1 Patients with CTS commonly present with pain or paresthesia (numbness and tingling) following the median nerve distribution territory (ie, the first three digits and the lateral half of the fourth digit).2 The prevalence of CTS is higher in women, especially during pregnancy. Although the true prevalence of CTS among pregnant women remains unknown, the estimates vary from 7% to 43% when using electrodiagnostic resources to -31% to -62% with clinical diagnosis. The unit é rhumatologique des affections dela main (URAM) scale was successfully translated to Korean
Dupuytren's contracture is a common fibrosing disorder characterized by the proliferation of fibroblasts in the palmar fascia leading to flexion contracture of the metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints. The Unit é Rhumatologique des Affections dela Main (URAM) scale is the first patient-reported outcome measure specific to Dupuytren's disease-associated disability.1 This questionnaire was previously translated into Spanish, Dutch and German with validation.2-4 However, URAM has not been translated and adap ted for use in individuals with Dupuytren's contracture who speak Korean. Biofeedback interventions for short term upper limb function following stroke: A systematic review with meta-analysis
Stroke is a neurological condition that has a major impact on global public health. Along with coronary artery disease, stroke is one of the leading causes of mortality in the world.1 The magnitude of stroke recovery in most sensorimotor rehabilitation programs depends on age, stroke severity, pre-existing comorbid conditions, and prestroke lifestyle factors.2 In addition, it is important to consider biopsychosocial aspects, as diseases can be modified by contextual and personal factors.3 (Source: Journal of Hand Therapy)

Effect of a stabilization exercise program versus standard treatment for thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis: A randomized trial
The thumb is vitally important for pinch and grasp activities, as well as overall hand function, largely due to the mobility of the first carpometacarpal (CMC) joint. CMC osteoarthritis (OA), also known as basal joint arthritis (BJA) or trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis (TM or TMC) is common, affecting women more so than men at a prevalence rate of 33% (post-menopausal women).1 Symptoms of CMC OA can include pain, decreased strength,2 and decreased overall hand function in older adults.3 Surgery is the most invasive treatment option, and most physicians begin with conservative approaches that may include steroid injections...

Exploring the patient experience of telehealth hand therapy services during the COVID-19 pandemic
Internationally, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented uptake of telehealth services, as a means of protecting both healthcare providers and consumers.1 In March 2020, COVID-19 was declared to be a human biosecurity emergency in Australia,2 which triggered a rapid change to provision of outpatient therapy in the public and private healthcare systems. In the private sector, insurance companies moved swiftly to allow funded or partially funded telehealth consultations with allied health providers. (Source: Journal of Hand Therapy)
