Patterns of Anterior Inferior Tibiofibular Ligament Avulsion Fracture Accompanied by Ankle Fracture
The anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament (AITFL) avulsion fracture accompanying an ankle fracture can compromise ankle stability, necessitating accurate evaluation and a clear understanding of its pathophysiology.. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between AITFL avulsion fracture and Lauge –Hansen, Wagstaffe classification. A retro-prospective study was conducted at a university-affiliated tertiary care medical center. We selected 128 patients who underwent surgery at our institution between January 2013 and July 2017 and analyzed the association between AITFL avulsion fracture and the foot posi...

Comparison of the Outcomes of Plating, Screw Fixation, and Pinning in Sanders Type II Fractures: A Multicenter (TRON) Retrospective Study
Calcaneus fractures Sanders Type II have been historically treated with various modalities. However, few studies compared these procedures directly. The multicenter (TRON group) retrospective study compared the radiographic and clinical outcomes of operative procedures using Kirschner wires (K-wires), cannulated cancellous screws (CCSs) and plates. Between 2014 and 2020, 121 patients with Sanders type II calcaneus fractures were surgically treated in our group using K-wire (Group K: n=31), CCS (Group C: n=60) or plate (Group p: n=30) fixation. Surgical Treatment for Isolated Closed Multi-Metatarsal Fractures: At Least 2-Year Outcomes in 79 Feet
This study aimed to explore the functional prognosis of isolated closed extra-articular multi-metatarsal fractures and the different outcomes between the plate-screw and K-wire fixation. This retrospective study included 79 patients who underwent surgery for isolated closed extra-articular multi-metatarsal fractures from May 2017 to December 2020. Morbidity and mortality of the transmetatarsal amputation: A comparative NSQIP analysis
The objective of this investigation was to compare the morbidity and mortality of the transmetatarsal amputation to other frequently performed surgical procedures utilizing a large US database. The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database was interrogated for the purposes of this investigation. We initially extracted data related to the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code 28805 (amputation, foot; transmetatarsal) and the variable labels “estimated probability of morbidity” and “estimated probability of mortality”. Hallux Valgus: The Influence of Intersesamoid Crista's Osteoarthritis on Frontal Plane Pronation
A frontal plane metatarsal rotational (pronation) has been documented in a high percentage of hallux valgus patients. Pathoanatomical concepts leading to pronation are still debated. Nevertheless, there is no consensus on how to measure this component of the deformity. The aim of the present study was to find potential associations between sesamoid's crista osteoarthritis and the frontal plane deformity in HV cases. Our study showed a moderate correlation between the crista's OA and the intermetatarsal angle (IMA), the hallux valgus angle (HVA) and the alpha angle. How Important is a Lesser Metatarsal Osteotomy in Preventing Second Hammertoe Recurrence?
In this study, we examined whether transverse plane transposition and/or shortening of the 2nd metatarsal during 2nd hammertoe surgery influenced recurrence. We performed a secondary analysis of pre-existing data from patients that had previously undergone 2nd hammertoe surgery at our institution between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2013. Minimally invasive versus open hammertoe correction: A retrospective comparative study
Hammertoe deformity is a common forefoot pathology, characterized by a progressive deformity with dorsiflexion of the proximal phalanx on the metatarsal head at the metatarsal phalangeal joint (MTPJ) and plantarflexion of the intermediate phalanx on the proximal phalanx at the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ). While there literature available discussing open techniques for hammertoe correction, there is a lack of publications discussing minimally invasive techniques, therefore the objective of this retrospective comparative study is to evaluate minimally invasive versus open hammertoe surgery in terms of time to osseo...

The Effect of Frontal Deformity at the Ankle Joint on Total Ankle Arthroplasty Revision Rate
The presence of severe coronal plane deformity in the ankle joint is widely recognized as challenging to correct by total ankle joint arthroplasty alone, necessitating additional rearfoot fusion. The primary aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the potential associations between the presence or severity of coronal tibiotalar deformities and adverse outcomes after isolated total ankle arthroplasty, such as revisions and complications. The secondary aim was to analyze the potential associations between comorbidities, demographics, and implant types, and adverse outcomes. (Source: Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery)

Comparison of Loss of Bone Height Following Total Ankle Arthroplasty Versus Tibiotalocalcaneal Arthrodesis
Ankle arthrodesis and total ankle arthroplasty are both well-accepted surgical treatment options for end-stage ankle arthrosis. However, total ankle arthroplasty has gained popularity as the survivability of implants is improving. It is understood that there is loss of bone height following tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis, but to our knowledge, this has not been investigated in the setting of total ankle arthroplasty. A retrospective radiographic review was conducted over a 5-year period. We investigated all patients who underwent a tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis or total ankle arthroplasty for treatment of ankle arthritis ...

Postoperative Glycemic Response in High-Risk Type II Diabetics Receiving Below-Knee Amputation: Does Intraoperative Dexamethasone Make an Impact?
This study aimed to assess the effect of intraoperative dexamethasone on postoperative blood glucose in diabetic patients undergoing atraumatic major lower extremity amputations. A single-center retrospective review of diabetic patients undergoing below-knee amputation between January 2017 through December 2022 was performed. (Source: Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery)

Financial Analysis of Preoperative Nasal Decolonization with Povidone-Iodine in Closed Pilon Fracture Definitive Fixation
The purpose of this study is to determine the financial practicality for the use of nasal povidone-iodine (NP-I) in the preoperative holding area in attempt to decrease the rate of infection that is associated with operative fixation of closed pilon fractures. Institutional costs for treating postoperative infection following a closed pilon fracture, along with costs associated with preoperative NP-I use, were obtained. A break-even equation was used to analyze these costs to determine if the use of NP-I would decrease the current infection rate (17%) enough to be financially beneficial for routine use preoperatively. (Sou...

Prevalence of Ankle Charcot Neuroarthropathy Presenting in a Tertiary Care Center
Charcot Neuroarthropathy's (CN) anatomic classification was originally formulated by the Brodsky article and the Trepman et al modification, including midfoot (type 1), rearfoot (type 2), ankle (type 3a), calcaneus (type 3b), multi-articular (type 4), and forefoot (type 5). In these classic studies, ankle joint and multi-joint CN are reported as 9% and 6-9%, respectively, but we believe ankle CN to be more common than that in a tertiary setting. We retrospectively reviewed patients presenting initially or as referral between 2004-2020. (Source: Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery)

Surgical treatment of metatarsalgia and severe instability of lesser metatarsophalangeal joints
The main object of this prospective cohort study was to compare surgical treatment options for primary metatarsalgia and the severe instability of lesser metatarsophalangeal joints. The outcomes of triple Weil osteotomy combined with direct plantar plate repair and triple Weil osteotomy, performed with proximal interphalangeal joint arthrodesis, are analyzed and compared. One hundred and thirteen patients (117 feet) were enrolled in the study. They were split into two groups. In the first group, undergoing Weil osteotomy, combined with the plantar plate repair, good results, including complete pain reduction, elimination o...
