Acute distal rupture of the calcaneus-fibular ligament near the calcaneus insertion: Magnetic resonance imaging for diagnostic value and comparison to surgical findings —a retrospective case series study
Distal rupture of the CFL (calcaneus-fibular ligament) was unique and important, because it is crucial to diagnose this type of injury before surgical intervention. In the present study, we collected several imaging characteristics based on MRI and tried to determine whether those clues can be used to diagnose distal rupture of CFL specifically and sensitively. Several imaging characteristics based on MRI were collected and used to diagnose and determine the location of CFL injury. All these clues on preoperative MRI were verified by operative findings and postoperative roentgenography. (Source: Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery)

New Year's Resolution
It is that time again. Time to resolve to continue good practices, change an undesired behavior, accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve one's life. Time to declare a New Year's resolution. For years I've done this and have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out what I should do. I can't say I have always lived up to my resolutions, but I repeat the process each year. This year, it was easy for me. I didn't have to think too hard about it. With my co-conspirator Dr Michael Dujela, I was at all costs to launch the first combined AO / ACFAS Basic Principles of Foot and Ankle Trauma and Reconstructiv...

Cheilectomy Alone in Patients With Elevatus Yields Poor 5-Year Survival Rate
This study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of the cheilectomy procedure for different degrees of elevatus. The study was Institutional Review Board approved and patients were evaluated retrospectively at Ascension St. John Hospital, St. John Surgery Center and St. John Macomb Township Surgery Center between 9/8/2012 and 1/8/2016. These were all performed by the same surgeon. The pre- and postoperative radiographs were analyzed and Seiberg's index was calculated. Charts were also reviewed, and demographic information was obtained. (Source: Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery)

Novel Extramedullary Fixation Device for Hammertoe Correction: A Retrospective Review of 100 patients
Classically, one of the more common treatment options for rigid hammertoe correction consists of end-to-end arthrodesis stabilized by temporary Kirschner wire (K-wire) fixation maintained until osseous consolidation or complication necessitating premature removal. However, single K-wire fixation allows for axial rotation which results in loss of compression at the arthrodesis site. To counteract this, intramedullary implants were designed to provide fusion site stability in all planes negating extra-skeletal extension of the wire. (Source: Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery)

Results of Transfibular Total Ankle Arthroplasty. A Series of 50 Implants
Total ankle arthroplasty has become popular in the last few years. The lateral transfibular approach is an alternative to the traditional anterior approach. The purpose of this study was to evaluate our 50 first and consecutive clinical and radiological outcomes of transfibular total ankle replacements (Trabecular Metal Total AnkleR Zimmer Biomet, Warsaw, IN) with a follow-up of at least 3 years. This retrospective study included 50 patients. The main indication was post-traumatic osteoarthritis (n  = 41). (Source: Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery)

Current Concepts of Foot and Ankle Angioleiomyoma
Angioleiomyoma is a benign tumor, which arises from the smooth muscle. It comprises approximately 4.4% of all benign soft tissues ’ neoplasms and they are commonly located at the lower extremities. They are most frequently found in middle-aged women. Angioleiomyoma is usually presented as a painful solitary lesion in the subcutaneous tissue.Due to the lack of evidence in the literature, the aim of this current concepts revie w was to provide foot and ankle surgeons the most updated and useful information for diagnosis and management of foot or ankle's angioleiomyoma. First Metatarsophalangeal Arthrodesis for Hallux Rigidus and Hallux Valgus: A Comparison of Patient Reported and Clinical Outcomes
Few prior studies have compared the patient reported outcomes of first metatarsophalangeal arthrodesis between hallux rigidus and hallux valgus patients. Furthermore, we sought to examine the impact of postoperative radiographic hallux alignment on outcomes scores within each group. A retrospective review of 98 patients who a received primary metatarsophalangeal arthrodesis from January 2010 to March 2020. Clinical complications including non-union were collected. Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information Systems (PROMIS) Physical Function, PROMIS Pain Interference, and the Foot Function Index (FFI) Revised Short F...

Midterm Outcomes of the INBONETM II Total Ankle Arthroplasty
As the number of total ankle arthroplasties (TAA) performed continues to increase, understanding midterm outcomes can guide both implant selection and preoperative patient counseling. The purpose of this study was to investigate midterm results including the survival rate and reasons for revision for the INBONETM II TAA. Patients undergoing a primary TAA with the study implant and minimum of 4.6 years postoperative follow-up were reviewed from a prospectively collected database. The primary outcome was implant survival. (Source: Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery)
