Short-Term Outcomes after Bipolar Osteochondral Allograft Transplantation in the Ankle
This study documents initial outcomes for patients undergoing bipolar OCAT in the ankle after advances in tissue preservation, transplantation techniques, and patient management strategies were implemented. Patients were prospectively enrolled into a registry designed to follow outcomes after OCAT in the ankle. Fourteen patients were included for analyses (12 primary OCAT, 2 revision OCAT). Four patients underwent Bipolar OCAT (tibia, talus) and 10 Bipolar+ OCAT (tibia, talus, fibula). (Source: Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery)

A novel model for predicting the sagittal length of the distal tibia using CT imaging and statistics
The purpose of this study was to determine the ratio of sagittal length to coronal length of the distal tibia for predicting the sagittal length of the distal tibia. Two hundred and two ankles were measured based on CT imaging availability. We measured the coronal length (Width, W) parallel to the Chaput tubercle from CT scans. Sagittal length was divided into three points (Diameter D1, D2, D3) in the axial plane on the same level. The relationship between coronal length and each sagittal length was determined through correlation analysis. (Source: Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery)

Lower extremity polydactyly does not disturb finding one's feet
This study investigates whether children with treated LEP learn to walk at an age comparable to the population and whether the SAM (severity of syndactyly, axis deviation and metatarsal involvement) classification system is prognostically useful. In a retrospective cohort of 18 patients, we tested for associations between patient characteristics and SAM scores, age at learning to walk and ability to fit off-the-shelf shoes. Comparison of Staple, Anchor, and Tenodesis Screw for Posterior Tibialis Tendon Fixation: A Biomechanical Analysis
Various posterior tibialis tendon fixation techniques are described in literature. Suture anchor, staple and tenodesis screws are widely used for posterior tibialis tendon transfer, but their stiffness and the maximal ultimate failure load were not tested before. We aimed to compare the initial ultimate failure load and stiffnesses of suture anchor, staple and tenodesis screws on bovine tendon fixation to bovine metaphyseal bone. Thirty-five fresh bovine ankle joints and hooves were obtained from a local abattoir. (Source: Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery)

What Do Patients Report Regarding Their Real-World Function Following Concurrent Arthrodesis of the First Tarsometatarsal and First Metatarsophalangeal Joints
First metatarsal phalangeal joint and first Tarsometatarsal arthrodesis have both been used for deformity correction and treatment of pain and arthritis. Concomitant arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal and first tarsometatarsal joints (Double First Ray Arthrodesis) has rarely been described. We surveyed 29 patients who underwent double first ray arthrodesis for primary or revision correction of hallux valgus. A custom questionnaire was used to assess their activities of daily living and sports activity at a mean follow up of 19.6 months (median 18.4 months). (Source: Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery)

Comparative Clinical Effects and Risk Factors Associated with Vitamin D in Foot and Ankle Fracture and Arthrodesis Healing
Vitamin D deficiency in relation to bone metabolism and healing has been controversial and not well studied. However, hypovitaminosis has been widely identified within the orthopaedic patient population. The current best evidence suggests a lack of data on this important topic. The ability to assess patients for optimum bone healing and metabolism is still in question due to lack of a suitable reliable biomarker and multiple other unknown variables affecting bone metabolism. To compound this effect, popular dermatological precautions in the last 20-30 years of avoiding sunlight also have the effect of further reducing seru...

The role of preoperative opioid use in foot and ankle surgery: A systematic review
Prescription opioids, particularly for treating musculoskeletal pain, are a significant contributor to the opioid epidemic in North America. There is also evidence to suggest that chronic use of opioids is associated with poor outcomes after orthopedic surgery. However, whether this association is relevant in foot and ankle surgery is still unclear. Accordingly, a systematic review of the literature was undertaken to assess the impact of preoperative opioid use in patients undergoing foot and ankle surgery concerning postoperative pain, complications, and postoperative opioid dependence. Comparison of clinical outcomes with Arthroscopic ATFL Repair with the CFL Repair and Open ATFL and CFL Repair in Chronic Lateral Ankle Instability
This study aimed to assess the clinical outcomes of our arthroscopic procedure compared to that of open surgery. Forty ankles underwent arthroscopic surgery and 23 ankles underwent open surgery to repair the lateral ankle ligaments for CLAI. (Source: Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery)

Rapid Scientific Progression Leaves Unanswered Questions on Its Way
Facing the challenge of COVID-19 pandemic restriction as European, I was fortunate for having had the opportunity to participate in the past 2 ACFAS Annual Scientific Conferences (Las Vegas and Austin). It has undoubtedly helped me to realize the actual tendencies in research in the United States and to make sure that the focus of my team's research is correct. Scientific knowledge is in a continuous and exponential progression. The collegial interaction ensured by an international conference of this gauge, which reunites some of the greatest minds in the orthopedic world, enables knowledge sharing and bring forth new idea...

Patterns of Anterior Inferior Tibiofibular Ligament Avulsion Fracture Accompanied by Ankle Fracture
The anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament (AITFL) avulsion fracture accompanying an ankle fracture can compromise ankle stability, necessitating accurate evaluation and a clear understanding of its pathophysiology.. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between AITFL avulsion fracture and Lauge –Hansen, Wagstaffe classification. A retro-prospective study was conducted at a university-affiliated tertiary care medical center. We selected 128 patients who underwent surgery at our institution between January 2013 and July 2017 and analyzed the association between AITFL avulsion fracture and the foot posi...
