Echocardiographic guidance for transcatheter mitral valve repair using edge-to-edge clip
AbstractPercutaneous intervention for mitral valve disease has been established as an alternative to open surgical repair in high risk and inoperable candidates. Edge-to-edge leaflet plication with Mitraclip (Abbott, Menlo Park, CA, USA) is indicated for primary and secondary mitral valve diseases. Echocardiography provides a better understanding of mitral valve anatomy and allows us to classify and quantify mitral regurgitation. Transesophageal echocardiography is essential in patient screening, intraprocedural guidance, and post-procedure evaluation for patients undergoing edge-to-edge plication with MitraClip. (Source: ...

Noninvasive assessment of left-ventricular diastolic electromechanical coupling in hypertensive heart disease
ConclusionThe correlation of TpTe withe′ andE/e′ in hypertensive patients suggests that these parameters reflect diastolic ventricular electromechanical coupling. TheE/e′ predicted outcome, and an elevatedE/e′ should be suspected when TpTe is prolonged (>  72 ms). Noninvasive evaluation of diastolic electromechanical coupling is clinically useful in patients with hypertension for predicting their outcome. (Source: Journal of Echocardiography)

Role of echocardiography in assessing cardiac amyloidoses: a systematic review
AbstractCardiac amyloidosis is a manifestation of one of several systemic amyloidoses, and is characterized by increased left-ventricular (LV) wall thickness and normal or decreased LV cavity size. Congestive heart failure in cardiac amyloidosis is characterized by a predominant diastolic LV dysfunction, and systolic dysfunction occurs only in late-stage disease. Echocardiography is a noninvasive, reproducible method for assessing cardiac morphology and function in cardiac amyloidosis, and some echocardiographic indices are prognostic for amyloidoses. This review describes the advances in echocardiography and its role in t...

Prognostic significance of residual functional mitral regurgitation in hospitalized heart failure patients with chronic atrial fibrillation and preserved ejection fraction after medical therapies
ConclusionsA substantial proportion of patients hospitalized due to heart failure with chronic AF have residual functional MR at discharge, even with pEF after medical therapies, and the MR is related to future heart failure events. (Source: Journal of Echocardiography)

Contribution of the left atrial remodeling to the elevated pulmonary capillary wedge pressure in patients with WHO Group II pulmonary hypertension
ConclusionsIn patients with HF and WHO Group II PH, progressive LA enlargement was independently associated with elevated PCWP. After excluding significant mitral regurgitation, LA enlargement was also associated with increased V-wave amplitude, indicative of decreased atrial compliance. (Source: Journal of Echocardiography)

The transition from transesophageal to transthoracic echocardiography during transcatheter aortic valve replacement: an evolving field
AbstractThe advent of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has dramatically transformed the clinical approach to severe aortic stenosis. Over the last decade, several trials have shown the equivalence or even superiority of transcatheter valve replacement over the conventional surgical approach. As a result, TAVR as a treatment for severe, symptomatic aortic stenosis has rapidly extended from inoperable or prohibited-risk patients to intermediate-risk patients. The success of TAVR has led to the wide adaptation of this technique and, subsequently, a significant increase in the number of these procedures performed ...
