‘Terminal anorexia’: a lived experience perspective
This article is based on a reflective and private email that I emotionally wrote in Autumn 2022, soon after reading a thought-provoking paper (Guarda et al. in J Eat Disord 10:79, 2022) about the new term. When I wrote the email, I had not read the Gaudiani et al. (J Eat Disord 10:23, 2022) paper that proposed clinical characteristics for the new diagnosis. Hence, my email was not, and th is article is not, a response to Gaudiani et al. (2022). Challenging the criteria that they proposed is beyond the scope of this article, which is just a lived experience reaction to theconcept of ‘terminal anorexia’ (regardless of wh...

Low bone mineral density is found in low weight female youth with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder and associated with higher PYY levels
ConclusionOur findings suggest that female adolescents with low-weight ARFID may have lower BMD than healthy controls and that higher PYY levels may be associated with lower BMD at some, but not all, sites in ARFID. Further research with larger samples will be important to investigate whether high PYY drives bone loss in ARFID. (Source: Journal of Eating Disorders)

The prevalence and burden of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) in a general adolescent population
ConclusionsThe prevalence of possible ARFID was found to be similar to that of anorexia nervosa and binge eating disorder in the general adolescent population. Adolescents who identify as girls rather than boys may be more likely to develop ARFID, replication with new samples is required to confirm these findings. The impact of ARFID on HRQoL may be minimal in adolescence and become more significant in adulthood, further research using longitudinal design, healthy control groups and/or diagnostic interviews is required. SipNose-topiramate: a potential novel approach to binge eating management
ConclusionsThis study introduces a SipNose-topiramate drug-device combination as a potentially safe, effective, and controlled method for BED management. Its findings introduce a potential approach to BED management both as an intranasal and as a PRN therapy for reducing binge-eating events, with a large-scale reduction in patient drug exposure and side effects and with improved patient quality of life. Further studies are needed with larger patient populations to establish SipNose-topiramate as a mainstream treatment for BED.Trial registration: Registration number and date of registration of the clinical studies reported ...

Perfectionism and binge eating association: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsOur findings suggest that Perfectionism Concerns are closely associated with binge eating symptomatology. This relationship might be moderated by certain variables, especially by the clinical or non-clinical nature of the sample and the instrument employed to assess binge eating. Exploring the effects of gender and sexual orientation on disordered eating: an EFA to CFA study of the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire
This study was an EFA to CFA exploration of the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire in a group of heterosexual, bisexual, gay, and lesbian men and women. In total 1638 participants were recruited via adverts in traditional and social media to complete an online survey. A 14-item, three-factor model of the EDE-Q was confirmed as best fitting the data and measurement invariance between groups was ascertained. Sexual orientation influenced disordered eating and muscularity-related thoughts and behaviours in men but not women. Heterosexual men reported more muscularity-related concerns and behaviours, whereas gay men sho...

Comparison of MI-oriented versus CBT-oriented adjunctive treatments: impacts on therapeutic alliance and patient engagement during hospital treatment for an eating disorder

Food addiction and binge eating disorder are linked to shared and unique deficits in emotion regulation among female seeking bariatric surgery
ConclusionsThe study found that individuals with obesity and comorbid BED exhibit greater emotional dysregulation compared to those with OB or FA, indicating a need to assess BED in individuals with obesity. Emotion dysregulation may be linked to increased BED and FA, but those with BED seem more affected by limited access to emotion regulation strategies. These findings support the notion that PEBs are associated with emotion dysregulation and underscore the need for tailored interventions that target emotion regulation skills before and after bariatric surgery.
