Dilemma in diagnosis of pyogenic meningitis in cerebrospinal fluid contaminated with blood: Does leucocyte esterase test help ?
Conclusion: Leucocyte esterase strip is specific for pyogenic meningitis (activated neutrophils), and hence can differentiate from CSF contaminated with blood. (Source: Journal of Cytology)

Immunocytochemistry on sputum samples predicts prognosis of lung cancer
Conclusion: This is the first report of immunocytochemistry of a panel of markers on cells exfoliated in sputum samples which suggests that analysis of immunocytochemical markers in sputum samples can be attempted as a cost-effective and reliable predictor of prognosis and survival. Accumulation of mutated p53, overexpression of galectin-3, and lower expression of p16 and EGFR proteins were found to predict poor prognosis for lung cancer. (Source: Journal of Cytology)

Molecular genetic study to detect prevalence of high-risk human papilloma virus strains (type 16 and 18) in cervical lesions and asymptomatic healthy subjects of rural central India
Conclusion: The results of the study are definitely helpful to know the prevalence of HPV in this region of rural population and will enrich the national epidemiological data related to HPV infection in cervical cancer. (Source: Journal of Cytology)

Use of panel of markers in serous effusion to distinguish reactive mesothelial cells from adenocarcinoma
Conclusion: In conclusion, combination of MOC-31 and CAL as a limited panel will be helpful in giving an appropriate diagnosis in difficult cases and thereby, help in patient management. In addition, ICC on cytospin smears gave results similar to cell blocks, and if standardised cytospin is simple technique to perform, unlike cell blocks. (Source: Journal of Cytology)

Fine needle aspiration cytology of cysticercosis: A study of 30 cases
Conclusion: FNAC is a simple, sensitive, cost-effective, and rapid diagnostic tool for diagnosis of cysticercosis as cytological diagnosis is quite clear where the actual parasitic structures are identified in the smear. (Source: Journal of Cytology)

A comparative study of cell block versus biopsy for detection of epidermal growth factor receptor mutations and anaplastic lymphoma kinase rearrangement in adenocarcinoma lung
Conclusion: We conclude that cell blocks can serve as a potential substitute for biopsies for detection of EGFR and ALK protein by immunocytochemistry, whenever patient presents with effusion and biopsy cannot be done or when tissue is not adequate. (Source: Journal of Cytology)

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided tissue acquisition: Techniques and challenges
Atul Rana, Surinder S RanaJournal of Cytology 2019 36(1):1-7 Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS FNA) has made pathological diagnosis of pancreatic neoplasms, diseases involving lymph nodes at various mediastinal and abdominal sites, gastrointestinal submucosal lesions, perirectal lesions, adrenal lesions, and mediastinal masses easy. EUS-guided FNA is a multistep procedure that involves assessment of proper clinical indication, correct selection of FNA needles, and adoption of evidence-based techniques for tissue sampling. EUS FNA is done by needles that are available in different sizes, mainly 25, 2...

Neoplastic meningitis: A study from a Tertiary Care Hospital from coastal India
Conclusion: A combined diagnostic approach including biochemical, microbiological and pathological evaluation was useful in eliminating infectious meningitis and confirming neoplastic meningitis in these cases. Cytology should be performed on cerebrospinal specimens from all patients with known or suspected malignancy with meningismus. Detection of malignant cells on cytological examination of CSF is the diagnostic gold standard for neoplastic meningitis. (Source: Journal of Cytology)

Prevalence of human papilloma virus types in Turkish and Albanian women
Conclusions: When we compare our results with other studies, there are differences between the frequency and order of the HPV genotypes detected at the second and subsequent frequencies. This may due to differences in the quality and type of samples analyzed, as well as the HPV detection methods. (Source: Journal of Cytology)
