How Close Is Too Close in Salivary Gland Tumors?
In this issue of JAMA Otolaryngology-Head& Neck Surgery, the American Head and Neck Society Salivary Gland Section presented a multinational study of the clinical behavior of low and intermediate salivary tumors. In this large study, including 865 patients from 41 institutions in 5 different countries, the authors show that we could expect excellent outcomes after surgical treatment of these tumors. The cohort, overall, has a 5-year survival of 94%. Local, regional, and distant failures were all observed rarely. The estimate of any recurrence at 3 years was 6%. These are encouraging findings. These findings are even mo...

Adenotonsillectomy for Treatment of Mild Sleep-Disordered Breathing in Children
In 2016, enrollment began for the National Institutes of Health –sponsored Pediatric Adenotonsillectomy Trial for Snoring (PATS) to study children with mild obstructive sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). PATS is a well-designed and well-executed multicenter, single-blind, randomized trial of 459 children. Participants were randomized to early adenotonsillectomy (AT) or watchful waiting with supportive care. In December 2023, JAMA published the PATS results. The authors found no objective differences in executive function or attention at 12 months. However, the secondary outcomes of quality of life, symptoms, behavior, and...
