Modified maxillomandibular advancement surgery for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea: a scoping review
Modified maxillomandibular advancement (MMMA) has been proposed as an alternative to the classic maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) in East and Southeast Asian populations in which bimaxillary protrusion is a prevalent trait. The key difference between MMMA and MMA is the inclusion of anterior segmental osteotomies to reduce the protrusion of the perioral region. The aim of this scoping review was to identify the variations in MMMA and treatment outcomes. A search was conducted in the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane electronic databases for articles published up to January 2023. (Source: International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Peri-articular bone formation involving the temporomandibular joint: a narrative summary and Delphi consensus of a new classification system
Heterotopic ossification (HO) is defined as ‘bone where it does not belong’. Given the historical variety of nomenclature and eponyms, there is significant confusion about the etiology, pathogenesis, classification, and treatment of HO related to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The existing classifications for TMJ HO have shortcomings: they relate to specific populations, use differing imaging studies and demographic data, do not universally include alloplastic/autologous replacements, are based variously on radiological and/or clinical presentations that cannot always be combined, and were largely developed to assi...

Midface hypoplasia in syndromic craniosynostosis: predicting craniofacial growth via a novel regression model from anatomical morphometric analysis
Midface hypoplasia in syndromic craniosynostosis (SC) may lead to serious respiratory issues. The aim of this study was to analyse the morphometric correlation between midface and cranial base parameters in paediatric SC patients in order to formulate predictive regression models. The computed tomography scans of 18 SC patients and 20 control were imported into Materialise Mimics Medical version 21.0 software for the measurement of multiple craniofacial landmarks and correlation analysis. The results showed a strong correlation of anterior cranial base (SN), posterior cranial base (SBa), and total cranial base (NBa) (r = 0...

Intraosseous schwannoma of the mandible: new case series, literature update, and proposal of a classification
Intraosseous schwannoma of the mandible is rare, with diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The aims of this study were to report new cases of intraosseous schwannoma of the mandible and to propose a clinical classification, providing suggestions for treatment methods. The cases of 13 patients treated at the authors ’ hospital and 86 cases reported previously in the literature were reviewed. The most common clinical feature was facial swelling (60/93). The rate of cortical thinning or expansion was 44.8% (43/96); widening of the inferior alveolar nerve canal on radiographs was observed in 15 patients. (Source: Internati...

Immediate implant placement for chronic peri-apical periodontitis in the molar region: a randomised controlled trial
The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of immediate implantation for chronic peri-apical periodontitis in the molar region. Seventy-four molars were selected and allocated randomly to two groups. The experimental group (n  = 38) received immediate implantation by flap surgery and the control group (n = 36) received delayed implantation. CBCT was performed immediately after surgery (T1) and 12 months after the permanent repair (T3). The implant survival rate at T3 was 100% in both groups. Management of clinically node-negative early-stage oral cancer: network meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials
The best treatments for the clinically node-negative (cN0) neck in early-stage oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients are a subject of ongoing debate and there is no consensus. A network meta-analysis (NMA) of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) was conducted to determine the most effective treatment and to rank treatments based on their effectiveness. A systematic search was performed in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines to retrieve RCTs that compared therapeutic neck dissection (TND), sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB), and elective neck dissection (END). Management of the neck in T1 and T2 buccal squamous cell carcinoma
Buccal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) appears to behave more aggressively than other oral subsites, in particular with regards to regional disease at presentation and regional recurrence. Adequate management of the neck is of the utmost importance but is still the subject of debate. An international multicentre retrospective review of 101 patients treated for T1 –T2 buccal SCC was performed. Twenty-four were staged clinical node positive (cN+) and underwent therapeutic neck dissection, while 77 were node negative (cN0), with 32 undergoing elective neck dissection (END), with an occult nodal metastasis rate of 28.1%. (Sour...

Stepwise osteotomy protocol for zygomatic implant placement under navigation in patients with extra-sinus trajectory
This technical note describes a stepwise osteotomy for zygomatic implant placement with an extra-sinus trajectory under navigation using virtual markers for registration. The stepwise osteotomy protocol divides the trajectory of the zygomatic implant osteotomy into three consecutive co-axial components. The aim is to achieve better control of the osteotomy under navigation and to minimize or eliminate any intermittent free-hand drilling. The stepwise osteotomy protocol facilitates the use of shorter drills to finish the zygomatic implant osteotomy at the entry location before switching back to the long drill to complete th...
