Meningoencephalitis following Le Fort I osteotomy: a case report
Le Fort I osteotomies, although they are common procedures, carry a degree of risk of injury to the surrounding structures. Skull base fractures and cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhoea are amongst the most serious on the list of complications. This is the first reported case of meningoencephalitis post Le Fort I osteotomy, shedding some light on its identification, causes, and management. Prosthetically guided mandibular reconstruction using a fibula free flap: three-dimensional Bologna plate, an alternative to the double-barrel technique
The fibula free flap represents the gold standard for mandibular reconstruction. However, when harvested as a single barrel, this flap does not allow the native mandibular height to be restored, which is required for implant-supported dental rehabilitation of the patient. The aim of this study was to present a new design for a patient-specific three-dimensionally printed reconstructive plate (3DBO-PSI) that positions the fibula bone at the height of the resected mandibular alveolar bone while restoring the mandibular profile to ensure a correct morphological outcome. A non-invasive method for the assessment of gingival thickness in the aesthetic zone and the concept of the gingival geometric ratio in an Asian population
The aim of this study was to investigate the gingival thickness and biologic width in the aesthetic zone (maxillary central and lateral incisors) in an Asian population using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as a non-invasive measurement method, prior to immediate implant placement. The gingival geometric ratio is introduced as a new parameter for assessing soft tissue stability and hence predicting the aesthetic outcome. The gingival thickness, biologic width category (normal, high, and low crest), and gingival geometric ratio (shape and configuration of the gingival tissues) were assessed for 171 central and 175 late...

Do dental implants facilitate bone invasion in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma? A case series
Osseointegrated dental implants in the vicinity of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) will become more common given the increasing popularity of dental implants. Reports and studies of OSCC around dental implants are rare, as is the topic of how to handle OSCC surgically when implants are in contact with the tumour. In view of this uncertainty, a histological study was performed to assess tumour behaviour around implants. The aim was to determine whether an implant facilitates inward growth of the tumour and how this should be taken into account during staging and treatment planning. Bone resorption after maxillary reconstruction with the vascularized free iliac flap
The aim of this study was to evaluate the resorption of the iliac bone after maxillary reconstruction with a vascularized free iliac flap. Twenty-seven patients with maxillary defects who underwent maxillary reconstruction with the vascularized free iliac flap between January 2017 and January 2021 were included. Computed tomography (CT) images taken at 1 week, approximately 6 months, and 1 year after the surgery were used for evaluation. The total iliac bone thickness and height, cortical bone thickness, and cancellous bone density were measured in the CT images. (Source: International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

The role of anterior segmental osteotomies in orthognathic surgery for protrusive faces in a Southeast Asian population: 10-year retrospective data of 51 patients treated in a single centre
The objective of this study was to investigate the treatment outcomes of surgical versus orthodontic retraction in patients with bimaxillary protrusion undergoing orthognathic surgery. A retrospective cohort study was conducted, where the medical records and radiographs of 51 patients with bimaxillary protrusion who had an anterior segmental osteotomy concomitant with orthognathic surgery were examined. Long-term prognosis of burning mouth syndrome following treatment
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term prognosis of patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) after the termination or discontinuation of treatment and to identify the clinical characteristics that might affect that prognosis. Of 769 patients with an oral burning sensation, 202 with primary BMS who had been treated for at least 3 months were included. Among them, 28 patients who responded to the treatment and 25 patients who did not were assigned to responder and non-responder groups, respectively. Effects of maxillomandibular advancement on respiratory function and facial aesthetics in obstructive sleep apnoea patients with versus without maxillomandibular deficiency
The aim of this study was to compare the effects of maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) on respiratory function between obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) patients with and without maxillomandibular deficiency, and to compare the changes in facial aesthetics after MMA between the two groups. MMA-treated patients who had both baseline and follow-up polysomnography (PSG) data and lateral cephalograms were enrolled in this retrospective study. In addition to PSG and cephalometric data, patient satisfaction with postoperative breathing and facial aesthetics, and overall satisfaction with the treatment were assessed. (Source: Inter...

Transmucosal pterygomaxillary disjunction using a piezoelectric device, in the context of the minimally invasive Le Fort I osteotomy protocol
The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy and clinical implications of pterygomaxillary junction (PMJ) disjunction with a transmucosal PMJ osteotomy using a piezoelectric hand-piece device, in the context of Le Fort I osteotomy, by evaluating the level of PMJ disarticulation and the need for bone trimming around the pedicle. An ambidirectional 1-month follow-up cohort study was designed involving consecutive patients undergoing minimally invasive maxillary Le Fort I osteotomy through the twist technique. Can surgeons rely on growth-related changes to achieve lip height and width symmetry in unilateral complete cleft lip repair?
Surgeons face difficulties achieving simultaneous lip height and width symmetry while repairing unilateral complete cleft lip, so one is often sacrificed at the expense of the other. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of growth on lip height and width symmetry, to guide the surgeon to the best decision. The study patients (N  = 105) were divided into two groups based on the treatment method: 42 were treated with the modified rotational advancement technique (MRA group) and 63 with the Millard rotation-advancement technique (RA group).
