Clinicopathological features and prognostic factors of salivary gland myoepithelial carcinoma: institutional experience of 42 cases
Myoepithelial carcinoma (MECA) is a rare type of carcinoma for which the clinicopathological features and prognostic factors have not yet been fully clarified. A retrospective study of 42 patients diagnosed with salivary gland MECA was performed, focusing on the clinicopathological features and prognostic factors. Of the 42 patients, 20 died of cancer, 20 lived without tumour, one lived with distant metastasis, and one was lost to follow-up. Overall, 69.0% had tumour recurrence, 16.7% had cervical nodal metastasis, and 21.4% had distant metastasis. (Source: International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Long-term control of lung metastasis of tongue cancer treated effectively with cetuximab combination chemotherapy
We report a case of tongue cancer in which lung metastases disappeared in the long term. A 60-year-old Japanese male with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue underwent preoperative chemoradiotherapy and surgery including subtotal glossectomy, bilateral modified radical neck dissection, and immediate reconstruction with an anterolateral thigh flap. Local injection of amphotericin B: novel use in the treatment of fungal maxillary sinusitis
This report highlights the role of local amphotericin B (AMB) injection in cases of maxillary mucormycosis. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a dramatic rise in the number of rhino-orbital mucormycosis cases. Although extensive surgical debridement remains the gold standard treatment, tissue salvage is desirable. The cases of two patients treated with local AMB are reported here, indicating that early intervention for maxillary fungal sinusitis in the form of local AMB may avoid the need for more invasive treatment. Customized palatal guide and splint for maxillary expansion
Customization in orthognathic surgery allows better precision and a reduced surgical time. In Le Fort I osteotomy surgery, the maxillary segmentation is considered one of the most unstable procedures due to transverse instability. Various different types of palatal device have been proposed to address this instability. This note describes a customized bone-borne palatal guide and splint that may help surgeons shorten the surgical time and achieve better three-dimensional repositioning, with more postoperative comfort for the patient and occlusal control for the surgeon. Patient-specific distractors for customized mandibular distraction osteogenesis to relieve upper airway obstruction in infants with Pierre Robin sequence
The purpose of this article is to report the author ’s technique for using patient-specific distractors for customized distraction osteogenesis of the mandible in patients with Pierre Robin sequence and upper airway obstruction. The advantages of virtual planning and patient-specific plates in other aspects of craniomaxillofacial surgery, such as o rthognathic and reconstructive surgery, have been reported previously. Similar to patient-specific plates, the theorized advantages of patient-specific distractors in infants with Robin sequence and upper airway obstruction include increased accuracy, decreased operating time,...

Favourable swallowing outcomes after subtotal glossectomy with laryngeal suspension
Subtotal or total glossectomy for advanced tongue cancer has an adverse impact on swallowing. The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyse postoperative swallowing outcomes and to determine the ideal reconstruction method in these patients. The clinical and swallowing data of patients with tongue cancer who underwent subtotal glossectomy at the study institution between 2005 and 2019 were reviewed retrospectively. Data were available for 101 patients. The most common reconstruction method was a free rectus abdominis musculocutaneous flap (69 cases). Modification of the pedicled osteomuscular dorsal scapula flap to include a skin paddle
This article describes a reliable surgical alternative for the repair of wide oromandibular defects that require bone and soft tissues, which was applied in two patient cases. While microvascular free flap transfer, especially the fibula flap, is the gold standard for mandibular reconstruction, this reconstruction is challenging in patients with a vessel-depleted neck and/or severe arteriosclerosis. The pedicled osteomuscular dorsal scapular (OMDS) flap is a surgical alternative to free flap transfer in this clinical setting. (Source: International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Septic arthritis of the temporomandibular joint managed with arthroscopy: a case report
Septic arthritis of the temporomandibular joint (SATMJ) is an uncommon bacterial or fungal infection of the joint space. A 68-year-old man with underlying diabetes mellitus and a history of liver transplant, who was on immunosuppressants, presented to the oral and maxillofacial surgery department of the authors ´ institution in Portugal. His main symptoms were arthralgia in the right temporomandibular joint, malocclusion, pre-auricular swelling and erythema. After clinical, laboratory, and imaging evaluations, diagnoses of chronic suppurative otitis media and SATMJ were made. (Source: International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Clinical study on the association between keratinized mucosa and peri-implant health when external hexagon implants are installed in the posterior region of the maxilla and mandible: a cohort study
This study evaluated the association between keratinized mucosa (KM) and peri-implant health of external hexagon implants in the posterior region in 84 patients with 242 implants. Modified plaque index (MPI), modified sulcular bleeding index (MSBI), probing depth (PD), keratinized mucosa (KM) width, and peri-implant bone loss were evaluated. The implants were divided according to the KM: (1) absence of KM, (2) KM width>0 and (Source: International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Three-dimensional bone remodelling of glenoid fossa in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion after bimaxillary orthognathic surgery
This study aimed to characterize three-dimensional quantitative morphological changes of glenoid fossa in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion treated with bimaxillary orthognathic surgery. Ninety-five eligible patients (50 male, 45 female; mean age 22.09 years) were enrolled retrospectively. Cone beam computed tomography obtained at 1 week preoperatively (T0), immediately after surgery (T1), and at ≥ 12 months postoperatively (T2) were registered based on cranial base using voxel-based registration in 3D Slicer. Association of anatomical features of the petrotympanic fissure and presence of foramen of Huschke with otalgia and tinnitus
The petrotympanic fissure (PTF) and foramen of Huschke (FH) are anatomical structures in the temporal bone that can connect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the ear. The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the association between PTF morphology and otalgia and tinnitus, as well as the prevalence of the FH and otological symptoms, using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). CBCT images from 114 patients presenting with symptoms of a temporomandibular disorder were examined retrospectively. (Source: International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Functional reconstruction of the masseter muscle by microvascular free gracilis muscle transfer: technique and outcome
This article reports a technique of masseter muscle resection, dissection of the masseteric nerve, and masseter muscle reconstruction with a functional gracilis muscle flap. The technique was applied in a 38-year-old man with recurrent intramuscular lipoma of the right masseter muscle. The flap was highly stable in form and showed good function.
