Lessons learned from characteristics of extraordinarily severe traffic crashes in  China, 2004-2019
This study aims at investigating the common characteristics, characteristic patterns, and changes of characteristics of ESTCs in China with the expectation to learn from the past and act for the future. A total of 373 ESTCs occurred in 2004-2019 were collected, and characteristics of driver factors, road factors, vehicle factors, environment factors, and other factors were analyzed through the multiple correspondence analysis (MCA). The results show that run off road crashes, not qualified drivers, improper driving, large bus, overload, class II highway, and straight road sections are the most common categories of characte...

Exploring the heterogeneous effects of riding behaviours and road conditions on delivery rider severities in scooter-style electric bicycle crashes involving vehicles
This study aims at identifying the unobserved heterogeneities in different factors, based on 4251 vehicle-scooter-style electric bicycle (SSEB) crashes. First, some potential factors are selected from seven perspectives, and the spatiotemporal characteristics are analysed. Second, a latent class clustering method is proposed to clarify the optimal number of clusters by maximizing the heterogeneities across clusters. Third, partial proportional odds (PPO) models for the whole dataset and sub-datasets are developed to explore the heterogeneities across various clusters. Besides, marginal effects are implemented to quantify t...

Newspaper framing of motor vehicle crashes and road safety in Argentina
This study analyzes the newspaper coverage and framing of motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) and road safety in Argentina, South America. The content of 304 articles published by 15 newspapers in November 2020 was reviewed. The results show that episodically framed news stories (focused on a single event or incident) prevail over thematically framed articles. MVCs are presented primarily as 'police' events and tend to receive more coverage when fatalities are involved. There is limited information provided on contextual and risk factors, and road safety advice is rarely included. Speeding, infrastructure, alcohol and other human...

The COVID-19 pandemic and changes in spatio-temporal patterns of suicide: monthly variations among localities in Argentina
Int J Inj Contr Saf Promot. 2023 Nov 8:1-5. doi: 10.1080/17457300.2023.2279956. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to assess space-time clustering of suicide in Argentina between 2017 and 2020. A spatio-temporal scan statistic using a space-time permutation model was employed to retrospectively detect clusters of total suicides by sex and by age group. From 2017 to 2020, six statistically significant spatio-temporal clusters were identified in Argentina with either more or less suicides than expected. Two clusters extended from May 2019 to July and September 2020, while the remaining four clusters were...

Examining factors influencing the severity of motorized two-wheeler crashes in Delhi
Int J Inj Contr Saf Promot. 2023 Oct 26:1-14. doi: 10.1080/17457300.2023.2267040. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFailure to meet road safety targets has necessitated urgent actions from stakeholders worldwide, especially in developing countries like India. Road safety of motorized two-wheelers (MTWs), one of India's most preferred travel modes for urban commutes, is in danger and witnessing threatening figures of fatalities and injuries. Most of the studies in the domain of MTW safety were conducted in developed countries, with very limited research in countries having a significant proportion of MTWs. The present work inve...
