Epigenetic Modification and Its Role in Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease, and its mechanisms have not been clearly elucidated. A large percentage (more than 95%) of cases are late-onset AD without familial traits. Although some genes have been implicated in the pathogenesis and the risk of developing sporadic AD, they only account for the minority of late-onset AD. Recently, accumulating data have suggested a potential role for epigenetic mechanisms in neurodegenerative processes leading to dementia. Alterations in the epigenetic machinery cause aberrant DNA methylation and histone acetylation. Therefore, these changes trigge...

Status Quo and Prospect of Colorectal Animal Models: Application of Transgenic Technology
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignant diseases and brings about serious damage to the human body. Presently, the incidence of CRC ranks third among the malignant tumors, and its 5-year survival rate is only about 50%. In recent years, more and more studies have focused on the application of transgenic technology in CRC research in vivo, which involves a great number of genes significantly related to the occurrence and development of CRC. The core of transgenic technology refers to the host chromosome gene accepting exogenous genes, which integrate into the host chromosome expressing it stably, followe...

RegentK: The Scientific Investigation of a 40-Year-Old Method in Regenerative Medicine
Background: Mohamed Khalifa has been healing even the most severe muscle and joint injuries in Austria for more than 40 years, without surgery, only with his hands by applying pressure on the skin. In this article, the author summarises the first scientific results trying to describe the way of functioning of this unusual form of therapy called RegentK. Historical aspects, regional oxygen saturation of deeper knee tissues, thermographic measurements, and electrodermal mapping are described in detail. Summary: Rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a high-incidence injury usually treated surgically. According to...

Roles of Antiphospholipid Antibodies, Antithyroid Antibodies and Antisperm Antibodies in Female Reproductive Health
Autoantibodies are implicated in various human diseases. In this review, the effects of three different types of autoantibodies (antiphospholipid antibody, antithyroid antibody, and antisperm antibody) on female reproductive health are critically examined. Antiphospholipid antibodies are being detected more frequently in women undergoing in vitro fertilization, but their presence does not appear to influence the outcome of pregnancy, miscarriage, or live birth rates. Available evidence makes it conclusive that antiphospholipid antibodies play negligible roles in recurrent miscarriage. Treatment with aspirin together with l...

Meraque or Triple Energizer (San Jiao): Actual or Virtual Organ in Traditional Medicine - A Hypothetical Viewpoint
Discussion: During embryonic development and after gastrulation, three layers called the ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm are formed. The mesoderm is the source of most of the internal organs, dividing into two layers, the somatic and the visceral, with an invisible space in between that is called the coelom. This space could possibly be the same as the Meraque/Triple Energizer/San Jiao (as a hollow organ) and, furthermore, the same as a cavitary tissue forming a pathway to connect the internal organs of the body with the surface of the body. In this case, many of the mechanisms of traditional medicine and acupuncture can b...

Ginkgo biloba Extract Inhibits Platelet Activation via Inhibition of Akt
In this study, we found that GBE adenosine diphosphate, collagen, and U4 (U46619) induced platelet aggregation in both platelet-rich plasma and washed platelets. GBE could reduce the adhesion of platelets to a collagen-coated surface and platelet spreading on fibrinogen. The treatment with GBE significantly inhibited the phosphorylation of Akt, suggesting that its inhibition of platelet activation might be mediated by attenuation of the PI3K/Akt pathway.Integr Med Int 2014;1:234-242 (Source: Integrative Medicine International)

Chaos Theory and Self-Organization Systems in Recovery Medicine: A Scientific Review
We present the concepts of phase space, channels, wildcards, attractors, determinism, synergetics, etc. and give the basic compartment and cluster approach to complex systems. Additionally, we show the interdependence of system analysis and synthesis applied to the development of European and Oriental medicine. Furthermore, the importance of modulation in adaptation programs in the control of the functional systems of a human body, confirmed in the data submitted for 14 patents covering inventions that have led to 2 discoveries, is demonstrated.Integr Med Int 2014;1:226-233 (Source: Integrative Medicine International)

The Effect of Riding as an Alternative Treatment for Children with Cerebral Palsy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: HT, THR, and AS seem to improve the total score of the gross motor function via improvement of the walking, running, and jumping dimension. However, they are not likely to be of benefit to the symmetry of postural muscle activity. Studies included in this review lack high-quality RCTs with a sufficient number of subjects, which thus warrants further evaluations of these modalities using large-scale well-designed RCTs.Integr Med Int 2014;1:211-222 (Source: Integrative Medicine International)

Integrative Medicine and Drug-Induced Vestibulopathy following Brucellosis Treatment: Clinical Practice
Brucellosis is still one of the most common causes of fever of unknown origin (FUO) in endemic areas and is associated with several complications. Here, we report a patient with a diagnosis of brucellosis and FUO who developed a rare complication of vestibulopathy in the course of treatment and follow-up. We treated the vestibulopathy with acupuncture, and during 10 days of treatment, the irreversible complication of vestibulopathy disappeared. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of brucellosis with vestibulopathy treated with traditional medicine that achieved complete improvement within 10 days.In...
