Genetically informative analysis of the association between intimate relationship adjustment and health.
Conclusions: Results suggest that the association between relationship adjustment and self-rated health remains after accounting for shared genetic influences, and that nonshared environmental influences, such as partners’ characteristics, account for the association between relationship adjustment and self-rated health in men. Incorporating automated digital interventions into coach-delivered weight loss treatment: A meta-analysis.
Conclusions: Results support the use of ADIs to augment coach-delivered behavioral weight loss treatment, and also suggest that ADIs have the greatest impact when coaching is relatively low in frequency or duration. Race/ethnicity moderates associations between depressive symptoms and diet composition among U.S. adults.
Objective: Although depression is associated with poorer overall diet quality, few studies have examined its association with levels of particular macronutrients, and none have examined moderation by race/ethnicity. The present study examined (a) associations between depressive symptom severity and nine indices of diet composition and (b) whether race/ethnicity moderates these associations. Method: Participants were 28,940 adults (mean age = 49 years, 52% female, 52% nonwhite) from NHANES 2005–2018. Depressive symptom severity was measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Nine diet composition indices we...

Person-specific dose-finding for a digital messaging intervention to promote physical activity.
Conclusions: A generic model of message effects on physical activity can provide the initial evidence for context-sensitive decision rules in a just-in-time adaptive intervention, but it is likely to be error-prone and inefficient. As individual data accumulates, person-specific models should be estimated to optimize treatment and evolve as people are exposed to new environments and accumulate new experiences. Information about herd immunity through vaccination and empathy promote COVID-19 vaccination intentions.
Objective: An effective vaccine against COVID-19 is a desired solution to curb the spread of the disease. However, vaccine hesitancy might hinder high uptake rates and thus undermine efforts to eliminate COVID-19 once an effective vaccine became available. The present contribution addresses this issue by examining two ways of increasing the intention to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Method: Two preregistered online studies were conducted (N = 2,315 participants from the United Kingdom) in which knowledge about and beliefs in herd immunity through vaccination, as well as empathy for those most vulnerable to the virus, we...

Child adjustment to parental cancer: A latent profile analysis.
Conclusions: Meaningful subgroups of children can be distinguished based on positive and negative indicators of adjustment to parental cancer. Whereas the majority of children appear to adjust well, 25% of children display high levels of traumatic stress and impaired HRQoL, in some cases combined with low life satisfaction; these children may need specific attention to improve adjustment in the long term. Awareness, affect, and craving during smoking cessation: An experience sampling study.
Conclusions: Awareness of current experience was related to key psychological variables linked to behavior change in smoking cessation, namely positive and negative affect and craving, among smokers trying to quit. Future studies should test whether learning to increase awareness, such as through mindfulness training, may benefit smokers in treatment. Time-varying associations between everyday affect and cortisol in older couples.
Conclusions: This study illuminates a potential pathway (i.e., perceptions of shared spousal feelings) by which not only one’s own emotional experiences, but also those of the spouse, are associated with the activation of physiological stress systems as indicated by elevated cortisol in a sample of older couples. Emotional distress in neuro-ICU survivor–caregiver dyads: The recovering together randomized clinical trial.
Conclusions: Neuro-ICU survivors and their informal caregivers show similar changes in emotional distress after treatment. These findings highlight the potential benefits of intervening on both survivor and caregiver distress following Neuro-ICU admission. Complex solutions for a complex problem: A meta-analysis of the efficacy of multiple-behavior interventions on change in outcomes related to HIV.
Objective: The purpose of this meta-analysis was to examine the success of multiple-behavior interventions and to identify whether the efficacy of such programs depends on the number of recommendations prescribed and the type of outcomes measured. Method: We conducted a synthesis of 136 research reports (N = 59,330) using a robust variance estimate model (Tanner-Smith et al., 2016) to study change between baseline and the first follow-up across multiple-behavior interventions, single-behavior interventions, and passive controls. Results: Multiple-behavior interventions were more efficacious than their single-behavior count...

Marital dissolution, marital discord, and C-reactive protein: Results from the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing.
Conclusions: This is one of the first studies to document a significant cross-sectional association between marital dissolution, marital discord, and CRP, incremental to demographic and health covariates, in a non-American probability sample. Results indicate that inflammation may be one pathway by which marital dissolution and marital discord contribute to risk for disease and early death.
