Long-Term Analgesia following a Single Application of Fentanyl Transdermal Solution in Pigs
Conclusion: This study confirms the pharmacological and clinical efficacy of FTS at 1.3 mg/kg in pigs throughout at least 7 postoperative days following laparotomy. The clinical analgesic effect of FTS appears more efficient and well-tolerated than the one observed with repeated injections of buprenorphine. This analgesic drug formulation could be universally used in animal research to provide optimal perioperative pain management and long-term analgesia.Eur Surg Res (Source: European Surgical Research)

The Effect of TISSEEL < sup > TM < /sup > on Confined Bowel Perforation: An Experimental Study
Conclusion: Application of TISSEELTM at the perforation site was associated with increased regeneration of the intestinal wall and less inflammatory and fibrotic reaction compared to suture placement. However, more experimental and clinical studies should be conducted before implementation in humans.Eur Surg Res (Source: European Surgical Research)

Hyperactivation of RAP1 and JAK/STAT Signaling Pathways Contributes to Fibrosis during the Formation of Nasal Capsular Contraction
Silicone implant-based augmentation rhinoplasty or mammoplasty induces capsular contracture, which has been acknowledged as a process that develops an abnormal fibrotic capsule associated with the immune response to allogeneic materials. However, the signaling pathways leading to the nasal fibrosis remain poorly investigated. We aimed to explore the molecular mechanism underlying the pathogenesis of nasal capsular contracture, with a specific research interest in the signaling pathways involved in fibrotic development at the advanced stage of contracture. By examining our recently obtained RNA sequencing data and global ge...

Re-Sterilisation of Single-Use Telemetric Devices
Implantable telemetric transponders for contactless measurement of physiological parameters are often used in animal-based research. After explantation, single-use devices cannot be re-implanted because of non-validated functionality and necessary re-sterilisation. This is disadvantageous because the battery life would enable a second implantation cycle in another animal. To save costs and time taken for the manufacturer ’s refurbishing process, we validated and implemented a re-sterilisation protocol for single-use transponders using hydrogen peroxide gas. The described protocol was established with models, i.e., for la...

Supportive Hepatocyte Transplantation after Partial Hepatectomy Enhances Liver Regeneration in a Preclinical Pig Model
Conclusion: HTx can be performed safely and effectively immediately after a partial (50%) hepatectomy as well as 3 days postoperatively, with comparable results regarding the enhancement of liver function and regeneration.Eur Surg Res (Source: European Surgical Research)

3D Breast Volume Estimation
Conclusion: 3D breast volume measurement using a depth-sensor low-cost surface scan device is feasible and can parallel MRI breast and mastectomy specimen volumes with enough accuracy. Differences between methods need further development to reach clinical applicability. A possible approach could be the fusion of breast MRI and the 3D surface scan to harmonize anatomic limits and improve volume delimitation.Eur Surg Res (Source: European Surgical Research)

Distal Pancreatic Resection with Splenectomy in the Rat: A Pancreatic Fistula Model to Investigate Postsurgical Damage?
Conclusion: Creating a functional animal model of pancreatic fistula that reflects the clinical and pathophysiological impact of pancreatic leakage in humans has not been achieved. Our approach of left pancreatic resection recapitulated inflammation and tissue damage, early events in the development of fistulas, and it could be suitable for the experimental testing of novel targeting methods.Eur Surg Res (Source: European Surgical Research)

Modified “Blumgart-Type” Suture for Wirsung-Pancreaticogastrostomy: Technique and Results of a Pilot Study
Conclusion: The principles of BA may be safely applied to the WPGA model. B-WPGA allows (1) gentle compression and closure of the small secondary ducts in the pancreatic remnant; (2) partial invagination of the pancreatic body in the gastric wall, with the pancreatic cut surface protected by the gastric submucosa; and (3) prevention of parenchymal fractures, as the pancreaticogastric stitches are tied onto the gastric serosa. Despite the limited number of cases in this study, the absence of mortality and anastomosis-related complications supports further reproduction of this technical variant. Larger studies are necessary ...

Surveys in Surgical Education: A Systematic Review and Reporting Guideline
Conclusions: Web-based surveys are gaining popularity for medical research in general and for surgical education specifically; however, this mode results in lower response rates than those of in-person surveys. The response rate of in-person surveys is especially high when focusing on medical students. To improve reporting of survey studies, we present the first step towards a reporting guideline.Eur Surg Res (Source: European Surgical Research)

Safety and Suitability of the SmartPill ® after Abdominal Surgery: Results of the Prospective, Two-Armed, Open-Label PIDuSA Trial
Discussion: Our study demonstrates that the use of the SmartPill ® is safe after surgery but requires a reasonable patient compliance to deliver meaningful data. An objective analysis of transit times and peristalsis was possible irrespective of type and site of surgery in over 95% indicating that the SmartPill® has the potential to deliver objective parameters for POI severity in future clinical trials. However, in some patients with prolonged POI, analysis of small bowel transit could be challenging.Eur Surg Res (Source: European Surgical Research)

Histological Assessment of Rat Retinas with Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury
Conclusion: The retinal IR model proposed is simple, reproducible, and allows variable durations of ischemia and reperfusion, and most importantly, it allows easy correction by adjusting the pressure of the sphygmomanometer, of any change in IOP to keep the ischemia stable, without having to recalculate the elevation height of the ischemia induction system. Moreover, the damage caused by IR can be effectively assessed by the type of histopathological assessment performed. For these reasons, it can be considered a reliable method for studying drugs that may prevent retinal IR injury.Eur Surg Res (Source: European Surgical Research)
