Defining Standards in Experimental Microsurgical Training: Recommendations of the European Society for Surgical Research (ESSR) and the International Society for Experimental Microsurgery (ISEM)
Background: Expectations towards surgeons in modern surgical practice are extremely high with minimal complication rates and maximal patient safety as paramount objectives. Both of these aims are highly dependent on individual technical skills that require sustained, focused, and efficient training outside the clinical environment. At the same time, there is an increasing moral and ethical pressure to reduce the use of animals in research and training, which has fundamentally changed the practice of microsurgical training and research. Various animal models were introduced and widely used during the mid-20th century, the p...

Early Discharge Programme on Hospital-at-Home Evaluation for Patients with Immediate Postoperative Course after Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery
Conclusions: For patients undergoing major colorectal surgery with minimally invasive surgical technique, an early hospital discharge care programme by means of referral to a HAH unit is a safe and efficient care model which entails a significant cost saving for the public healthcare system.Eur Surg Res 2017;58:263 –273 (Source: European Surgical Research)

Intraoperative Real-Time Assessment of Liver Function with Near-Infrared Fluorescence Imaging
This study was conducted to obtain the data necessary to apply NIR fluorescence imaging as a modality for measuring liver function.Materials and Methods: This study included 16 patients who underwent open hepatopancreatobiliary surgery between March 2011 and March 2012. After laparotomy, ICG was injected intravenously at 2.5 mg/L of liver volume, then the fluorescence intensity (FI) and signal-to-background ratio (SBR) in the lateral segment of the liver were assessed for 15 min. Intraoperative blood samples were also obtained to measure the plasma clearance rate of ICG (ICGK). Correlations between ICGK, liver volume, and ...

Skin Perfusion Changes within 12 h after Axillary Plexus Block
Conclusion: Axillary plexus block produces an improvement of peripheral tissue oxygen saturation of the upper extremities over the first 6 h after the inception of anesthesia. This suggests a potential benefit especially for critically perfused tissues.Eur Surg Res 2017;58:227-234 (Source: European Surgical Research)

In vitro Growth Pattern of Primary Human Osteoblasts on Calcium Phosphate- and Polymethylmethacrylate-Based Bone Cement
Conclusions: In summary, these data suggest a limited biocompatibility of both PMMA and Ca-P cements, necessitating further research to reduce unfavourable cell-cement interactions and consequently extend implant survival.Eur Surg Res 2017;58:216-226 (Source: European Surgical Research)

Argon Delays Initiation of Liver Regeneration after Partial Hepatectomy in Rats
Conclusion: Impairment of liver regeneration was apparent after argon 50 vol% inhalation that was most probably mediated by downregulation of HGF and IL-6 in the initial phase. However, the present study was not adequately powered to prove that argon has detrimental effects on the liver. Further studies are needed to evaluate the effects of argon on livers with preexisting conditions as well as on ischemia-reperfusion models.Eur Surg Res 2017;58:204-215 (Source: European Surgical Research)

The Aachen Minipig: Phenotype, Genotype, Hematological and Biochemical Characterization, and Comparison to the G öttingen Minipig
Conclusion: The Aachen minipig is a suitable model for research due to its similarity to other minipig breeds, especially the G öttingen minipig. The reference values established in this study may be used for the comparison of scientific data and encourage the use of the Aachen minipig as an animal model for biomedical research.Eur Surg Res 2017;58:193-203 (Source: European Surgical Research)

Evaluation of Infection Resistance of Biodegradable versus Conventional Annuloplasty Rings in an in vivo Rat Subcutaneous Model
This study included 32 Wistar albino rats which were divided into 2 groups according to the implantation of sterile or infected annuloplasty rings as control and study groups. Each animal had 2 implantation pockets (made on the right and left side of the dorsal median line) where 1 cm of the biodegradable annuloplasty ring was implanted into one pocket and 1 cm of the conventional annuloplasty ring was implanted into the other pocket. The infection model was created by topical inoculation of 1 mLStaphylococcus aureus strain (2 × 107 colony-forming units/mL) into the implantation pockets before skin closure. Each group was...
