Risk of periodontitis in adolescents with bipolar disorder: a cohort study of 21,255 subjects
AbstractAlthough a growing number of studies have investigated the relationship between psychosocial factors and periodontitis, studies investigating the association between bipolar disorder (BD) and periodontitis are lacking. Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, 4251 adolescents with BD and 17,004 age- and sex-matched controls were included. They were followed up from enrollment to the end of 2011 or death. Periodontitis was diagnosed during the follow-up. Cox regression analysis indicated that adolescents with BD had a higher risk of periodontitis (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.96, 95% confidence interval...

Comparing behavioural outcomes in children born extremely preterm between 2006 and 1995: the EPICure studies
ConclusionsBehavioural outcomes have not improved for EP children born in 2006 compared with those born in 1995. Relative to term-born peers, EP children born in 2006 had worse outcomes than those born in 1995. There is an ongoing need for long-term clinical follow-up and psychological support for children born EP. (Source: European Child and Adolescent Psychiatry)

Short-term effects of an elimination diet and healthy diet in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a randomized-controlled trial
AbstractAn Elimination Diet (ED) may be effective in reducing symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), but has never been compared to an active control condition [i.e., Healthy Diet (HD)]. In a two-armed RCT, a total of N  = 165 children (5–12 years) with ADHD were randomized by means of minimization (1:1) to either an ED (N = 84) or HD (N = 81) within two Dutch child and adolescent psychiatry centers. The design included a non-randomized comparator arm includingN = 58 children being treated with Care as Usual (CAU). Treatment allocation was unblinded. The primary outcome was a 5-poin...

Diagnostic trajectories of mental disorders in children and adolescents: a cohort study
This study aims to describe the main diagnostic trajectories across a broad range of mental disorder diagnostic categories, from childhood to adolescence and from adolescence to young adulthood in a clinical population. A prospective study was conducted among a clinical sample of children and adolescents who were aged 3 –17 years at the face-to-face baseline interview. Electronic health records of these participants were reviewed 10 years later. The diagnostic stability over time was examined using the kappa coefficient, and factors associated with stability were explored using simple logistic regression. The s tudy in...

Change in child mental health during the Ukraine war: evidence from a large sample of parents
This study aims to provide a preliminary estimate of the degree of change in the mental health problems of Ukrainian children following Russia’s invasion in February 2022, and to identify the sociodemographic and war-related risk factors associated with these changes. A nationwide , opportunistic sample of 1238 parents reported on a single randomly chosen child within their household as part of The Mental Health of Parents and Children in Ukraine Study. Data were collected between July 15th and September 5th, 2022. Participants completed modified versions of the Pediatric Sym ptom Checklist (PSC-17) which was adapted to ...

Barriers and facilitators to social prescribing in child and youth mental health: perspectives from the frontline
AbstractThere is growing interest in the role of Social Prescribing (SP) to help promote mental well-being and support individuals with mental health difficulties. Yet, implementation of SP to children and young people (CYP) has proved slow and underdeveloped compared with adult populations. Understanding the barriers and facilitators will help key stakeholders to better embed SP for CYP into practice. Using the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF), a comprehensive, theoretical-led framework, underpinned by 33 behaviour change theories and 128 constructs, perceived barriers and facilitators to SP were investigated. The samp...

Data-driven profiles of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder using objective and ecological measures of attention, distractibility, and hyperactivity
This study highlights the poor feasibility of categorical systems to parse ADHD heterogeneity and the added value of data-driven approaches and VR-based assessments to obtain an accurate characterization of cognitive functioning in individuals with and without ADHD. Prevalence of chronic and multisite pain in adolescents and young adults with ADHD: a comparative study between clinical and general population samples (the HUNT study)
We examined the prevalence and distribution of chronic pain in adolescents and young adults with ADHD using 9-years longitudinal data (from T1:2009 –2011 to T3:2018–2019) with three time points from a clinical health survey compared to two age-matched reference population-based samples. Mixed-effect logistic regression and binary linear regression were used to estimate the probability for chronic and multisite pain at each time point and to compare the prevalence of chronic pain with the reference populations. The prevalence of chronic and multisite pain was high in those with ADHD, especially in female young adults, w...

Temporal changes in the associations between diagnosed psychiatric disorders and dropping out of school early
AbstractPsychiatric problems are risk markers for poor educational attainment. The number of adolescents receiving treatment has increased. We investigated whether the association between psychiatric problems in early adolescence and dropping out of school had changed. We used the register-based 1987 and 1997 Finnish Birth Cohort studies, which include all live births in Finland. Hospital districts with incomplete records were excluded, leaving 25,421 participants born in 1987 and 32,025 born in 1997. The main outcome was not having applied for secondary education by the year the cohort members turned 18. Our main predicto...

ADHD-related sex differences in emotional symptoms across development
AbstractTo investigate developmental changes in emotion dysregulation (ED) and associated symptoms of emotional lability, irritability, anxiety, and depression, among girls and boys with and without ADHD from childhood through adolescence. Data were collected from a sample of 8 –18-year-old children with (n = 264; 76 girls) and without (n = 153; 56 girls) ADHD, with multiple time-points from a subsample of participants (n = 121). Parents and youth completed rating scales assessing child ED, emotional lability, irritability, anxiety, and depression. Mixed effe cts models were employed to examine effects and in...

High resting heart rate protects against the intergenerational transmission of antisocial behavior: a birth cohort study
This study examines whether high resting heart rate may be one such factor. Resting heart rate was measured in 405 children of parents from a birth cohort, together with antisocial behavior in both the parent and the child. Children who were not antisocial, but had a parent high on antisocial behavior, had higher resting heart rates than all three other parent –child antisocial behavior groupings. Results withstood control for age, gender, ethnicity, body mass index, and psychosocial adversity. Robustness checks confirmed these results. Findings are the first to identify a biological protective factor against the interge...
