The longitudinal association of combined regulatory problems in infancy and mental health outcome in early childhood: a systematic review
AbstractCo-occurring regulatory problems in infancy, RPs, including excessive crying, feeding –eating and sleeping, have been found associated with mental health problems in school ages. Still, an overview is needed on trajectories of co-occurring or combined RPs, and mental health problems in early childhood. The aim of this review is to systematically review the literature on longitudina l community-based studies of combined RPs measuring mental health outcomes in early childhood. Following the PRISMA guideline, we systematically reviewed the literature published 2000–2020, in which combined RPs are assessed in infan...

Positive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on depression and anxiety in Chinese adolescents
AbstractThe potential impact on mental health of home schooling and social isolation due to COVID-19 lockdowns has led to widespread concern, particularly for adolescents. However, studies including pre-pandemic data from longitudinal cohorts with an assessment of the longer-term impact of the Covid-19 pandemic beyond the first months of 2020 are scarce. This longitudinal study of 1534 adolescents attending a secondary school in Hunan province investigated self-reported symptoms of anxiety and depression using two validated scales (Screen for Child Anxiety Related Disorders, Child Mood and Feelings Questionnaire) at six ti...

The prevalence of self-injury in adolescence: a systematic review and meta-analysis
AbstractIn the past 10  years, there has been a growing interest in self-injurious behavior (SIB) among adolescents. The lifetime prevalence of SIB is between 16 and 22% in community sample with females more likely to engage in SIB. There are conflicting results about the global distribution of the prevalence of SIB and whether the SIB has increased in the 21st century. Our aim in the current study was to conduct a systematic search of and meta-analysis on the prevalence of SIB in adolescents over the past 5 years’ worth of published papers and to examine gender, continental, and year differences. We conducted a system...

Interventions for prevention and treatment of substance use in youth with traumatic childhood experiences: a systematic review and synthesis of the literature
AbstractMost substance use begins in adolescence. Both childhood trauma and associated post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) increase risk for early substance use, which is associated with greater eventual severity of substance use disorders (SUDs). When co-occurring, PTSD and SUD can reinforce and exacerbate each other, necessitating integrated treatment approaches. To systematically review existing literature on interventions for prevention or treatment of SUDs among adolescents (aged 10 –24) with a history of trauma, with or without PTSD, we searched databases (PubMed, PsycInfo, CINAHL, Cochrane CENTRAL) using search ...

Correlations between sleep problems, core symptoms, and behavioral problems in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis
This study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022339695). We systematically searched the PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from inception to April 27, 2022. Observational studies that reported correlations between measures of sleep problems, ASD core symptoms, or ASD behavioral problems were included, and participants aged 18  years or below were enrolled. The correlation coefficient (r) was assessed as the primary effect metric. Total 22 cross-sectional studies were included, which comprised 2655 participants (mean age  = 6.60 years old; mean percentage of boys = 80.64%). We found correlations b...

Characteristics of single vs. multiple suicide attempters among adolescents: a systematic review and meta-analysis
This study was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, and the review protocol was registered in PROSPERO. We conducted a systematic literature search in three databases to identify original studies exploring the characteristics of single attempters vs. multiple attempters among adolescents. We considered a wide range for the definition of adolescent, following most recent recommendations: 10 –24 years. We carried out a meta-analysis. Fourteen studies were included in the systematic review and 13 in the meta-analysis with a total sample of with a to...

Electroconvulsive therapy in children and adolescents in Europe-a systematic review of the literature complemented by expert information and guideline recommendations
This study describes the use of ECT in children and adolescents in Europe. We systematically searched the literature concerning the practice of ECT in minors in all 53 European countries. In addition, we surveyed European experts about national practices and compared guidelines for ECT in minors. The search yielded 79 publications from 18 European countries, mainly from Western Europe, Israel, and Turkey. National data were available from eight countries. These showed an interestingly high relationship between the number of minors treated with ECT and the general use of ECT. No persistent deficits or deaths were reported. ...

Influence of stigma, sociodemographic and clinical characteristics on mental health-related service use and associated costs among young people in the United Kingdom
This study examined the influence of stigma, psychopathology, and sociodemographic characteristics on mental health-related service use and costs related to service use in a cohort of young people in the UK. Using data from a community sample of young people aged 9 –17 years and their caregivers, we assessed 407 young people’s use of services due to mental health problems, young people’s psychopathology, demographic characteristics, maternal education and caregivers’ stigma-related beliefs. Unit costs related to services were gathered from national an nual compendia and other widely used sources. We assessed predi...

Risk of periodontitis in adolescents with bipolar disorder: a cohort study of 21,255 subjects
AbstractAlthough a growing number of studies have investigated the relationship between psychosocial factors and periodontitis, studies investigating the association between bipolar disorder (BD) and periodontitis are lacking. Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, 4251 adolescents with BD and 17,004 age- and sex-matched controls were included. They were followed up from enrollment to the end of 2011 or death. Periodontitis was diagnosed during the follow-up. Cox regression analysis indicated that adolescents with BD had a higher risk of periodontitis (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.96, 95% confidence interval...

Comparing behavioural outcomes in children born extremely preterm between 2006 and 1995: the EPICure studies
ConclusionsBehavioural outcomes have not improved for EP children born in 2006 compared with those born in 1995. Relative to term-born peers, EP children born in 2006 had worse outcomes than those born in 1995. There is an ongoing need for long-term clinical follow-up and psychological support for children born EP. (Source: European Child and Adolescent Psychiatry)

Short-term effects of an elimination diet and healthy diet in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a randomized-controlled trial
AbstractAn Elimination Diet (ED) may be effective in reducing symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), but has never been compared to an active control condition [i.e., Healthy Diet (HD)]. In a two-armed RCT, a total of N  = 165 children (5–12 years) with ADHD were randomized by means of minimization (1:1) to either an ED (N = 84) or HD (N = 81) within two Dutch child and adolescent psychiatry centers. The design included a non-randomized comparator arm includingN = 58 children being treated with Care as Usual (CAU). Treatment allocation was unblinded. The primary outcome was a 5-poin...
